★★ WHAT THIS VIDEO IS ABOUT★★
In this video you will get an overview of intonation in English - a feature of pronunciation. Intonation describes the change in pitch as we speak. Pitch describes the highness and lowness of our speaking voice. We use intonation to express meaning (grammatical functions) and attitude. Did you know you are sending a message through your intonation whether you want it or not? Even the little word ‘Hello’ can be said in many different ways using a range of intonational patterns - all with a different meaning! Find out more about how we use our voice to convey a message to our listeners in this first video on intonation.

Thank you for this Billie 💚. I only recently realised that intonation is one of the main ways we communicate our true feelings in English. It's often not what you say, it's the way you say it !

Great video. The slight rise at the end of the "bored" "Hmmm" sounded more "dubious" or "doubtful" to me. If I am bored "Hmmm" would be more abbreviated with a lower pitch at the end.

I love your lessons so much. Thanks a million! 1. Could you please tell me the differences between these terms in Phonetics and Phonology: pitch, intonation, tone, tune? 2. Do the terms: the rise/ fall...tone/tune/intonation mean the same thing? 3. Please help me with syllable division in transcription.

Hello! Some great questions! I have a few videos answering them: What is pitch? kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZJ2OtNKBcZfeeaw.html The 3 Ts of Intonation (tonicity, tone & tonality): kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y4WGldyFqtXXlqw.html Tone units & Tonic syllables: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oKGt0ZWHqsyffJM.html Usually, we don't show syllable boundaries when we transcribe. I am considering making a video on syllable boundaries soon!
