    Can we just take a moment to appreciate that this clip of a song from Into the Woods was not only posted on KZread before the film adaptaion, but was also posted the same year as KZread's launch? And survived for 13 years without getting stricken for copyright? Truly remarkable, don't you think?

    But the whole point of this scene is to be uncomfortable. Sondheim said in an interview that his interpretation of the Red Riding Hood story was to draw comparison to child molestation. That's why the wolf is always holding Red (also might explain the...er...anatomically correct wolf). It was supposed to be awkward. BTW, Red Riding Hood is now being played by Lilla Crawford.

    The whole play is revealing the ugly truths in sweet fairy tales and the dark frightening woods is the world as we live in it. The wolf (like the Prince) is a predator. The girl is what we all are.... ignorant of evil. The play is about children growing up and unaware that the curses or spells they have cast on them are born of what we often never take responsibility for. Our own inability to accept that NO ONE IS ALONE and that mistakes are what we all make and to learn how to come together in the dark woods is ur only chance of growing up.

It could be because of the two roles being parallel to one another, or it could have been out of convenience at the time that we mostly keep to today out of tradition. But, the original production had Bernadette peters in it, so we know they could have had two different actors play the role if they really wanted to, but they didn’t

    Every production (and movie) should keep the tradition of having the Wolf played by the same actor as Cinderella's Prince. If you listen to the Original Cast Album, the extended version of 'Any Moment' even echoes the lyrics of this song - "All are worth exploring, one would be so boring..." It's a subtle but important hint that the Prince is a different kind of predator.

In each of his songs, this one and "Any Moment/Moments in the Woods" Sondheim used a lot of the same rhymes. If you compare both songs, they're pretty similar. In this one the wolf is sort of seducing Red (I know, it's creepy to think of it) and in the other song, he's seducing the Baker's wife. Just something I noticed, check it out, it's clever.

    The parts with Red in this play is more about a young teen (fourteen, fifteen), who is new to the world of dating. A more experienced teen, usually around sixteen or older, will take advantage of the young girls eagerness and excitement about dating. I think they did an amazing job portraying this kind of boy (man?).

    *LYRICS:* [WOLF] Look at that flesh Pink and plump. Hello, little girl... Tender and fresh, Not one lump. Hello, little girl... This one's especially lush, Delicious... Hello, little girl, What's your rush? You're missing all the flowers. The sun won't set for hours, Take your time. [LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD] Mother said, "Straight ahead," Not to delay or be misled. [WOLF] But slow, little girl, Hark and hush- The birds are singing sweetly. You'll miss the birds completely, You're traveling so fleetly. Grandmother first, Then Miss Plump... What a delectable couple: Utter perfection- One brittle, one supple- One moment, my dear-! [LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD] Mother said, "Come what may, Follow the path And never stray." [WOLF] Just so, little girl- Any path. So many worth exploring. Just one would be so boring. And look what you're ignoring... Think of those crisp, Aging bones, Then something fresh on the palate, Think of that scrumptious carnality Twice in one day-! There's no possible way To describe what you feel When you're talking to your meal. (GROWL) for granny [LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD] Mother said Not to stray. Still I suppose, A small delay... Granny might like A fresh bouquet... Goodbye, Mr. Wolf. [WOLF] Goodbye, little girl. And hello... (howls)

    Yeah, there has always been speculation on the actual meaning of the red riding hood story. Sondheim being a very intelligent and literary man would of course make that reference. I've never read the book so that's as far as my analysis can go. This musical is to die for, one of my favorites.

    The play was MUCH better than the movie. I had high expectations because of Depp and Streep whom I admire greatly. I grew up watching this play. Bernadette Peters is amazing and my major memories growing up involve me singing the original lyrics, so it was sad when most of the songs and feeling of the play had dissolved. Watch the play. It’s just better.

    I'm just hoping it's better than the Sweeney Todd adaptation, they cut everything out of that movie and shortened songs, and they made it to dark. It was supposed to be a black comedy not all the way dark. It's good for a Tim Burton film but nothing like the actual stage production

  • @criles

    @criles

    7 жыл бұрын

    Blair Bart Lol, if you saw the stage play you would know they had blood, and yeah Depp is a good actor but there is plenty wrong with the movie. They cut songs, performances were stale at moments, parts were miscast. And I'm not 100% wrong, it's supposed to be a dark comedy that's the way Wheeler and Sondheim wrote it. Is the actual legend of Sweeney Todd supposed to be funny? No. But the musical was supposed to have some light hearted parts and whimsical parts. Considering too that Sondheim casted the parts before writing the music, Cariou and Lansbury will always be the best because they are who the characters were made for.

    Wolves in fairy tales and fables have always been tricksters, they're not just predators who take what they want by force. I imagine the wolf would rather deceive Red Riding Hood and THEN eating, as opposed to just pouncing on her and killing her. They tend to enjoy going through the trouble.

    like the above comments say, he likes talking to his meal. in terms of the story, how the "wolf" (a predator, also old slang for "womanizer") appears to be charming and nice to red at first and disguises himself as someone trustworthy before revealing his true colors and eating her once she's gotten close enough is meant to mirror how real life predators operate.
