It's funny. When I was 18 and saw this movie for the first time I instantly fell in love with it. Now I'm nearly 30, I've seen it probably a dozen times and it's still my favourite movie but for totally different reasons. At 18 I romanticized the freedom, solitude, wilderness and adventure as the path to a fulfilling life. Now it seems clear to me that only love and connection to other people can bring lasting happiness. Unbelievable movie :)

I just graduated college, and I came back to this movie. I promise that I won't be slave to money
I think a lot of people misunderstand the message at the end. In my understanding, "love is only real when shared" means that he can still find the happiness in all the things he did previously, like the nature and freedom, but they never make him truly happy. Only if it is shared with someone. I saw a lot of people saying that happiness comes from love and relationships with other people only, but I think it comes from anywhere you find it, we just need to share that happiness we find, to feel fully content.

Chris led a brief yet courageous life. The friends he met along his journey were everything to him.
I wish more people would leave Facebook and Instagram behind. Just live. Don't care what others think.. the joy is to be alive not the possessions

"HAPPINESS IS ONLY REAL WHEN SHARED" This really makes me aware that the real importance is in who you spend your time and experiences with. Also, they last longer in your memory when you share them with someone than when you are alone.

I did this and I swear I went from being like Chris to being like Ron. Even Chris ended up that way it seemed with his quote. He just wanted someone to share his happiness with. If you’re not you may as well be living it out in your head, because there’s no one there to validate your experience in reality anyway. The happiness almost doesn’t feel real ya know. And you never truly know how to feel about your experiences because you people are going to perceive it differently most likely negatively without living the way you have. It’s the most bittersweet feeling I have ever felt. Quite overwhelming to be honest. But in saying that I’ve had the best thoughts and experiences of my life since I left everything behind. Do it if you’re gut is telling you to, that’s what I say. Good luck to you mate

He lived his philosophy.
That happiness when you makes your parents proud❤
There's a lot of takeaway from this movie. Chris had a lot of integrity and the courage to put his ideas and natural ethics to the test. There are plenty of bigger issues here that we need to confront and most people are not. Chris was justifiably disgusted by a failed and brutal system that has disconnected us from nature, from each other, and finally from ourselves and our own bodies. We pay the price of this in widespread violence, crime, the almost daily atrocities in the news, less quality of life, less community and diminished health and lifespan. Human civilization, the modern city-state was built on cooperative problem solving, not competition. Lets ask ourselves if this is what we want. Is this the life we want to live? Chris' answer was no and he enforced this decision with all of his willpower, intelligence and stamina to the very end. It may not be necessary to go to this extreme, but when we think of Chris, let's think of how we can get better balance in our lives. How can we make the many small changes? Changes that will restore a higher level of function and balance, health and better civilization instead of the current continued, rapid descent into a Mad Max world. Lots of deconditioning will be necessary, major paradigm shifts, major changes in our education system. We need to question EVERYTHING and come up with a much better set of new answers that function.

This insightful teaches us that happiness gains its true significance when we share it with others. As individuals, we naturally seek happiness and strive to find meaning. By nurturing connections, fostering empathy, and valuing the happiness of others, we contribute to a more ethical and inclusive world. When we share our values, beliefs, concepts, thoughts, and feelings of joy, we establish genuine connections with others. It is crucial to recognize that happiness alone does not define the entirety of life's existence. Finding happiness is not a solitary endeavor but a collective journey. Ultimately, the pursuit of happiness becomes a driving force behind our existence.

The Chan/Zen Buddhists have it right. Until you learn to isolate the clinging, dissatisfied part of your personality and put it in its place, you won't be able to live fully in the present moment. Of course achieving that is no easy thing...but is well worth the effort.

when i think about it more, how does someone learn happiniess if they cant learn to be happy by themselves. we will never get whatever we want all the time, but if we dont try out new things, go try something out alone and experince small happiness how will we be able to share it either. i think to be ok with yourself, forming your own being and your experinces becomes a stepping stone to happiness and eventually sharing that experience with others dear to your heart.
