Mesmerizing , mistic beauty. I asked for this documentary as my birthday present. Absolutely loved

"Die große Stille" is a 2005 documentary film -- we have to wonder how the monastery is doing now, some 18 years later. That's a long time in which any number of things may have happened. In our hearts and imaginations we want places like the Carthusian monastery of the Grande Chartreuse to continue, refuges from the great cacophony of the insane consumer world that devours everything and everyone.

Le Grande Chartreuse is doing well. There is one Charterhouse in the U.S. located on Mount Equinox just south of Manchester, VT. The community at present is composed of 17 men (it can hold 25) with an age range from 26 to 70, the majority under 50. Life in all of the houses is almost identical in customs and schedules.

@@johnroberts18651 Thanks for the update. I was going to look into some type of multi-day retreat there.But I looked up their website where it said, "Because of their vocation to solitude, the monastery is not open to visitors." I can understand that they might be inundated with such requests.
