(2) Lestat was on the defensive but was still confident when he said, “Rook protects the king, and your queen has been neutralized.” This refers to Antoinette protecting Lestat and neutralizing Claudia. (3) When Lestat realised he was losing, he muttered, “Queen on one side, rook on the other.” This points to Claudia and Louis teaming up to beat him. (4) Although Claudia had reached a winning position, she refused to finish him off with a checkmate. This resembles how she and Louis failed to actually kill Lestat when he was helpless.

This was my favorite part in the story. When Lestate realized Claudia had become a worthy opponent in Chess and in life. Watching Lestate go off because Claudia refused to finish the game was amazing. He taught her well.

When Lestat yelled "Finish the game!" 6:09 I think he knew that Claudia was more calculating and cunning than before, and not to underestimate her.

@@Tojoj22 I wouldn't say he "turned" her into a psychopath, she was well on her way from the beginning. What he did was speed along her disconnecting from her humanity, by being cruel. And sadistic. Just like Louis says "all humans died with Charlie", her humanity, and her sanity burned right up with him. The only thing I think he did, by treated her the way he did, was make sure that her resentment, anger and wrath was directed solely on him. He didn't turn her into what she becomes, but he definitely made a real enemy. Just as cruel, soulless and manipulative as him

I just watched this episode earlier and I was AMAZED!!! This scene is incredible! Man, Lestat is terrified of Claudia, that is why he gets so angry. He realized she bested him AND he never saw it coming. He thought he was five steps ahead (like always), but Claudia was ten steps ahead of him. Claudia has truly figured him out, and she sees all his weaknesses. That is why Lestat can't stand her. He is terrified of her because she is one of the only people who has ever been able to see through all of his bullshit, and he knows it.

After watching this clip a 100 time , during the second game lestat respond to the game was directed at the conversation between Louis and Claudia.

Given she grew up in a brothel it's not out of the realm of possibility she'd be groomed to provide companionship to males, an artist, conversationalist and provide other "services".

This whole scene is a master class in writing. That probably why the books are some of the best vamp fiction ever made. In this scene we learn Lestats narcissism knows no bounds. Lestat never wanted an equal companion, he wanted subjects that he deemed he was stronger then, smarter then and ones that loved him the most. Thats why he never told or taught louie how to fly. And he never spoke of his maker or had other vamps around, cuz he wanted Louis to stay weak and in the dark. Claudia was supposed to be something like a pet for louis, but he started to love her more then him, and Lestat despised her, yet tolerated her. When she beat him tho, she proved to be his intellectual equal and he wanted her dead from that moment.

That's why Lestat fell into complete disgrace. His narcissism made him underestimate both Louis and Claudia. For him, Louis, was the "beautiful wife", fragile and submissive, and he liked to keep it that way, which is why he denied his knowledge (like flying, for example). Claudia was the lap dog, so Louis could be happy and not abandon him (remembering that HE is emotionally dependent on Louis). What Lestat forgets is that Claudia is very intelligent and harbors a visceral hatred for him and is capable of anything to get revenge on him. And Louis, when alive, was a pimp, and never conditioned himself as the "wife" that Lestat wanted, no matter how passionate and depressed he was. He's a rogue, an intellectual, he's a survivor. And Lestat doesn't know how strong Louis is.

Claudia was always tortured by the devastating reality that she would never change. And she truly began to hate and feel betrayed by those who did this. Especially since Lestat basically used her as a weight to trap Louis.

True. But I also think, this version of Claudia at least... hated him, also, for rejecting her. For not wanting her. Which most people forget, is all she's known essentially her whole life. Her father didn't want her, so he gave her to her aunt. Who then beat her, my guess is because she resented having her too. Then Lestat clearly doesn't want her, rejects her and even hates and abuses her just for existing. Then of course there's also the love and loyalty he has, from Louis. The place he holds in Louis life and his heart. Claudia loves Louis. Louis saved her life, Louis accepted her and loved her unconditionally. No matter how monstrous she was, he loved her just for existing. He wanted her. But he loved Lestat, and she just like Lestat, grew to want Louis all to herself.

@dimitries I unfortunately agree. And I did like the movie, didn't love it, as a book fan, but it was what we had. So it was still one of my favorite movies. But this series has absolutely ruined me, for anything else. Like I can't see anyone else other than this cast, as any of my beloved characters. When I go back to the books, which I have been doing every year or so, for the last like 20yrs. The character now look and sound like the series versions. The damage (with all the love) is irrevocable. And I am honestly just so happy that this exists in my lifetime 🙌🖤

At first while watching the series all I did was criticize Criticism like, they made Brad Pitt black and gay now, they made Christian slater character hella old, or they moved the timeline up about 50years. As soon as I stopped with criticism, I noticed the positives far outweighed the negatives. Matter of fact I was completely wrong. The story dosent work without the gay love story. and the fact that Louis is black only adds more depth to the period piece portion of the story. I can go on and on but like I said, I can’t enjoy the movie anymore

So Louis is like the mother and Lestat is like the father figure. This is actually pretty good. They call him Louis not Louie like they did in 1994 Interview With A Vampire and Claudia wasn't a brat that they made her out to be in Neil Jordan's Interview With A Vampire. 2022 Interview With A Vampire is far better and deeper and connects with the characters. Claudia is much more challenging to Lestat than she is with Louis. Father Mother Daughter realtionship... Chaotic family****

@@satinsolstice Lestat’s father was very abusive both physically and verbally. Lestat absolutely loathed him. He ended up leaving home…lots of things happened, being turned into a vampire…more things happened, coming to NOLA and taking care of his father who was blind by that point. You really should read Interview with The Vampire and/or The Vampire Lestat. I love reading, but I understand not everyone has the patience for it. I believe the audiobooks are on KZread (the unabridged versions) maybe check those out. Just don’t let them taint your enjoyment of the tv show. We book readers are getting a bad rep…not all of us are unhappy with the tv show. The OP made a great analysis of the chess match between Lestat and Claudia.

Show is a weak imitation of the books. You don't love it. You love the marxists erasure.

The chess game on the board is actually a real one, it’s called “The Polish Immortal” played in 1927 - you can find an analysis of it on KZread. The interesting thing is that Lestat’s King is already in checkmate, Claudia does not have to (nor can she according to chess rules) make any more moves. So it is an intriguing choice by the writers to make Lestat tell her to finish the game. It might mean that Lestat has already lost (and not only the game) without realising it or that maybe that it is not enough to checkmate the King (in chess you do not actually capture the King and take it off the board like other pieces, the game ends when the King is under attack, but has no moves to escape - just like Lestat at the end), but rather that you have to “kill” it - which could be the pawn move (taking the King) that Lestat says her to take at the end of the game, even though it’s unnecessary to do so according to chess rules. Either way, fantastic foreshadowing, since he was outsmarted and defeated, but not killed (the illegal move pawn takes King was never made/Claudia did not kill Lestat)- the King even though defeated, was not killed and stayed on the board, and even though in a coffin in a landfill - still alive.

lol. It’s more than him losing the game. I think this scene highlights Claudia surpassing Lestat (which, at least for this version of him, isn’t a good thing). She’s 10 steps ahead instead of 5, and she’s got him completely figured out.

I adore these scenes. Claudia is just so fantastic in these scenes with how she interacts with both Lestat and Louis. Her character development from episode 4 to here has been so good 🙌🏽

Love this scene. This remake has elevated the books for me.

Even though I'm a sucker for book accuracy, I actually don't mind that they aged the character of Claudia up a few years. I can't imagine it's easy to find a 10-year-old actress who can convincingly act like they have the mind of an adult, and even if they had found one, I still don't think she'd've given a performance as good as this.

It was mainly due to child labor laws in New Orleans so they had to use an adult for the role. But I actually like this teenage version for this interpretation. Now that we know part 2 of IWTV won't be released until very late 23 or early 24, using a kid actor would have not worked out all. Bailey currently being 19 is still growing too.

The true mistake of turning Claudia so young truly starts manifesting when she gets more focused time with Lestat. She hated him for so long that she wound up absorbing one his worst traits in apathy. Couple that with her desperate connectivity to Louise and you have the makings of a monster. Lestat for all his facade really only ever wished to be loved even if he was quite obsessive and callous about it. Louise can't even love himself half the time but Claudia just wants him to love her. She would rather supplant Lestat than be a healthy alternative.

Yup yup yup. Can't agree enough. And most people completely miss or overlook that part of it. Because that's a big reason in the book too. She wants Louis all to herself, and doesn't want to share with Lestat at all. It's subtle most of time, but they still do a pretty good job at showing in this series, that Claudia is just as possessive of Louis as Lestat. And just like Lestat feels like she can't/doesn't want to live without him, and is desperate not to lose him. Also, making Claudia was definitely their worst mistake. She never should have been turned. And they both admit it in the books. They don't regret her, but they know that it was a mistake. Not only to make her one of them, but also to subject her to their f*cked up relationship

But they're definitely posessive on different levels and in different ways... I'll stick to just the show... Lestat is posessive of Louis the most out of all of them. But I think for Lestat it's more so out of a feeling of ownership yes; being his maker. But mainly out of love, protective-ness and fear. Because of his past and because of Armands prophecies, he's desperate not to lose him. At any cost. It's also because of losing Nicki and his mother, and he's terrified of something happening to Louis. First because of his deep rooted love for him, but also because Louis is so weak and is so human. Claudia; while show-Claudia does love Louis and wants Louis as her companion. She sees Louis more as an actual possession. As a tool to use for her own needs, and a weapon to use against Lestat. As well as a prize she wins, for beating Lestat. Armand; is possessive closer to the same way that Claudia is. To him Louis is a prize he's won for beating Lestat, a tool against Lestat, a physical possession. But also more like a pet. Now I'm just talking about show-Armand, and only from what we've seen so far. Book Armand does actual gain a genuine love and friendship with Louis, and his possessiveness of him turns more to Lestats own version. Lestat is definitely, without a doubt the most possessive. Although I'd argue that his possession of Louis, causes the least amount of damage to Louis, than the other two. And yes, Lestat definitely created more competition for himself. Hell he did that just by making Claudia. However I do think Claudia herself made herself into a direct threat to Lestat, for Louis. Especially in the book. She became a literal romantic rival, all of her own accord and choices. In the show they're steering clear of that, so it's a threat to his companionship (platonic) rather than romantic. Still a threat though, and I for one blame Lestat almost completely. Almost. He makes very poor life. Choices

I think that's where Louis is. That's why he tries to "correct" Claudia, but doesn't say a thing to Lestat. Not anymore. Last time he he did, he nearly died. Angry Lestat is terrifying. He's just so dangerous and so unstable, makes him very unpredictable. He's also cruel and sadistic. Claudia though, that's actual evil right there. She doesn't scare me, but she disturbs me.

Such a great scene. The Lestat actor is really good.

I think he captured Lestat in looks and personality exceptionally well.

When Lestat got up to continue screaming at Claudia for not finishing the game and Louis got up as if to run after him but simply turned up the radio, reminded me of when my father would get so infuriatingly mad at me and my siblings and we’d get chased by him with a belt! 😂 Wonderful acting on Sam’a part, Wonderful!!

I like this scene because its pretty much just Claudia showing Lestat that she can defeat him (in more than just chess) but then leaving to go to bed. So Lestat knows he lost but Claudia refuses to show who will strike the final blow. This keeps Lestat in uncertainty of what move Claudia will make to finish him off. Nice little detail

Lestat underestimated Claudia. Lestat is the type to try and become a king, while Claudia is the type to be the power behind the power. She watches & she learns. This scenes shows that she’s no longer the student & that terrifies Lestat. Lestat felt that he needed Claudia & Louis to be dependent on him. He feared them being independent, feared they would want to leave him alone. He should have given them the freedom to grow, & them give him the same. The more he squeezed, the more his family slipped from his grasp (Louis & Claudia aren’t innocent either though).

Because in the book, everyone left him alone Was that was a victim of a Narcissistic parent I’m surprised they haven’t mentioned Gabrielle his mother, yet he already explained in the first episode, how his father Kidnapped him from a monastery, tortured him and beat him because he didn’t want him to become a priest and his brothers helped his father do that the reason why he became a vampire is he ran away and went to Paris. His mother gave him money to do so.

The scary thing about this is when you realize she planned to kill lestat months before all of this ! Remember she knew Antionette had been watching them since the park bench just b4 she “attempted to leave” which is why when she poisoned lestat she says “you should have left that train leave” so the more frightening question is did she intentionally manipulate lestat into coming after her because she needed Louis to empathize with her and that’s why in the book Armand really wanted to get rid of her she was more cunning than vampires twice her age

Lestat and Louis look great together, but it is until Claudia came that this show was brought to a whole another level.

Love this scene so much. I come back to rewatch this once in the a while. It's hard to choose a favorite episode, but episode 6 is currently my top.

I was shocked at good this show is…I love how it included actually Creoles..

To me, this game was a lesson and a foreshadowing of the future...Lestat always thought of himself as powerful and therefore untouchable like a king, queen, knight, or bishop while pawns were of no real threat to him because in his eyes they could never defeat those with power and so he thought her foolish when she started sacrificing her strongest pieces. Claudia knew Lestat only ever saw her as a pawn in his game to keep Louis from leaving and never saw her as a threat to him or the power he had over Louis after so many years but when she outsmarted him and won the game she proved to him that with time and patience, the pawn can easily overthrow those who think themselves to be forever untouchable and in power. "move the pawn finish the game" He wasn't just upset about losing the game but was also trying to dare her into messing around and finding out.

This scene is so good, i forgot how good the first actress was as Claudia

6:35-6:36 Lestat looks more sad and afraid than he does angry.

Agree. This displayed that Claudia had learned all she needed to learn from Lestat in order to not only survive, but thrive as a vampire.

Claudia was definitely playing chess.

She was so good in these chess game scenes! These actors brought their A-game to this series.

It’s so refreshing when a show comes out that is so beautifully written that it makes you forget about all the other crap being shoveled to the masses. I truly got lost in this adaptation and cannot wait for part two.

His lying ass probably wasn't even there. He probably said that just to make himself look better, which is why she jumped on it immediately. She's not taking any of his shit.

I love how they continue to talk over each other when arguing none backing down waiting for the other to finish and how Claudia’s face and voice changes when she talks to lestat shows how much she hates him love it

wtf is this show? Amazing acting, I think I was holding my breath for parts of the second half. Why aren’t clips of this everywhere?

I love Claudia she’s my favorite vampire great scene between Lestat and Claudia but I really loved episode 7 Claudia in control in the office on the porch at Lestat end she was always in control

5:55 this is when Lestat saw Claudia as a calculated vampire. When he said finish the game, he was annoyed then became outraged when she would not finish the game.

Lestat will never die because he is the main character. If you read the books you will understand Lestat has been through it all and always comes out on top. He is much more powerful than other old vamps . That alone tells you he's on another level. This just one of his check list (starting a family).

im SOOOO excited to watch how much claudia realizes that she hates louis just as much as she did lestat, or even more. it isnt until lestat is gone that she starts to transfer the hate to louis. i also LOVE how much the show has played with the audience perception of the events, of course we're watching the story from Louis' perspective and an edited version of Claudia's.... can't WAIT until Daniel gets to read the shitshow that is Europe AND Paris from Claudia' pov...

He's not "blinded by love" he's broken. And a victim of abuse. Louis is an empath, Lestat is a Narcissist. Lestat is essentially eating him alive, and Louis is trying to grab anything he can, to survive. Speaking from experience, but sometimes when you get broken and beaten down that bad (and I'm not just talking about the DV in ep5), you literally have to lay down and take a minute. Before you can get back up again. He's taking his minute.

EDIT - But you’re right, just because Louis is a vampire it doesn’t change that he still clings onto his humanity and is the more “human” of the trio.

@Gemini Twitch Nah I'm right there with you. I've fortunately never experienced domestic abuse, from a partner before so not I can even understand what makes people stay sometimes. Love is one thing, but there's gotta be a line I imagine 🤷🏽‍♀️

can I just say, the “secret of all secrets” that louis wanted to kill lestat was very in the moment, I feel like he did in the moment that she’s speaking to him here, but when the time came he realized he didn’t want that, not truly, which is what precipitates the whole dream lestat s2 arc

Claudia & Lestat is perfect together I love the underlying and boiling anger between these two. They were just alike but Claudia thinks she is not like him but she is just as evil like Lestat. And Louis loved Lestat and the power he had over him but Claudia as a child think she is saving Louis from Lestat when in fact he did not want to be saved. I love these two scenes & Louis listening and watching knowing he can’t control neither one.

I didn't finish reading Interview with a Vampire. But I read all the other vampire Chronicles I believe that they all said that Louis and Claudia are the weakest of vampires because they were so fast Lee made. I don't believe they had the power of the Mind

Louis was essentially made to be a trophy wife (pretty boy, soft, sensitive) while Claudia was made to be an eternal child. They were inherently made to be weak companions.

So lestat was listening to there conversation with help from Antoinette.

6:16 and 6:21 capture why Louis finally decides to kill Lestat. Louis isn’t able to defend Claudia from Lestat’s verbal abuse and resorts to turning up the radio. He can’t defend himself because Lestat is stronger. He can’t leave because Lestat won’t let him. He can’t even withhold sex without risking sending Lestat into another rage so even his body is not his own, hence Louis describes his own body as “a vessel of acceptance.” The inevitability that Louis and Claudia discuss applies to the violence as well: Lestat will inevitably lose his temper and batter Louis again, and Louis might not survive it next time.

Lestat has never forced Louis to have sex with him. It sounds quite disgusting. Also I guess you are talking about his rage in ep5? It wasn't about sex as well. Never. The other details we'll know in S2 😊 As Jacob said Louis was angry and actually couldn't recognize his great love at that moment. They made a lot of mistakes but ALL of them.

I have a question, why their vampire's eyes are a different color? would that depend on what eye color had when they were human?

I think one of the things thats different than the movie. (Idk about the book) Is that lestat encouraged and taught claudia. He showed that he actually liked claudia and she was part of their family. I loved the scenes in the movies where he would teach her when to kill and take her on parties with different families and show her off and they would kill those families together. Weirdly endearing and i enjoyed the teacher lestat aspect as well. Here in this show i wanted to see that. I know the actor for lestat would kill that aspect of lestats character. As well as i wanted the character to acknowledge claudias genius as well. I love the show though. They are doing such a great job!!!

You know what's wild to me... I was just re-reading the book (for the 100th time 😅) specifically to get receipts for the many times that Lestat had hit Louis, in the book... anyways, there's a scene in the book where Lestat casually refers to Louis as his slave, and how it's essentially totally normally. How Vampires make slaves of eachother, when they make another. Up until that moment, Louis hadn't even considered it. Lestat is the one who gave him that realization. Makes me laugh, because of all the fans that are upset that the "slavery" theme was created only for this series adaption. And only because of Louis & Claudias race change. Before Claudia was turned, Lestat already viewed Louis as his slave, and being made to really consider it, Louis agrees. Then I know, down the line when Claudia is all homicidal, or is that patricidal 🤔 She refers to them as Lestats "slaves" too. So, regardless of the fact that it does fit the new race dynamic for the series. The whole theme is from the book as well, so all of you that are so upset about it. Take it up with the Author herself. RIP Anne Rice.

And the lines that Claudia says here about "we're his slaves and I shall free us both." This whole conversation is pretty much verbatim from the book. Only difference is Claudia and Louis are walking in the park as she divulges her plans to him.
