Absolutely love this guy. Consider myself blessed to have lived through the 80's and been taken on the ride through his career...the retirement(s), they eye injury, Hearns Bouts, Loss and Win(s) with Duran, impossible victory over Hagler, so many great twists & turns. This man was the genuine article. SUGAR RAY FAN FOR LIFE !

4:13 There's no doubt about it. Back then, pride and glory was on the line. They wanted to prove they were better. And "better" meant something more fierce beyond the 12 rounds. They wanted to prove they were the better man. These days, boxers can just out-touch you for 12 rounds and they'll be the winner.

9:45 Leonard's raw skills of keeping his distance at this point was insufficient to be effective against Duran. This was shown in the first couple of rounds where Leonard was fighting more distanced. Leonard was losing the first couple of rounds because of this. He was actually doing better the more he went toe to toe with Duran. Eventually, they looked very even at the end. On another note, Leonard won't ever admit it, but Duran was out of shape in their second fight.

@@davidmichaels362 It's no secret that Leonard wanted a quick rematch to catch Duran off-guard. SRL knew that Duran was out indulging in food and drink celebrating in victory. Leonard phoned his manager while on vacation in Hawaii and told him to set up the rematch ASAP. In the aftermath of the Montreal fight, Duran had blown up to over 200 lbs. Duran was forced by his management, which stood to gain financially from them accepting the rematch so quickly. Duran's management knew his tendencies to party hard between fights and gain significant weight, but didnt care about putting their fighter in a bad situation. Duran knew that a rematch was going to happen. He just didnt realize it would be exactly 5 months to the day of their first fight. Duran struggled to take off the weight in such a short time period, and entered the match in a weakened state, which was the game plan all along. I dont blame Leonard for trying to gain an advantage for the rematch. I blame Duran's management for accepting the fight on Leonard's terms for financial reasons and not protecting their fighter's interests.

@@davidmichaels362 Sure it has nothing to do with Leonard. But he will never be able to say "I beat a prime Duran." No, he beat a poorly conditioned Duran. That's what he wanted and that's what he got.

He knew Duran was out of shape because Mike Trainer , Morton and King set the date for the second fight and gave Durans manager an extra 2 million for his self if he made it happen. Eleta signed the papers for the fight and Duran was happy for the rematch till Eleta told him the date and Duran said can’t do it I can’t be ready by then. Eleta told Duran that’s the date just get ready and Duran said I can’t. Eleta told him you have to fight. Duran called Arcel and Arcel told Eleta they can’t do it. Well Eleta, Arcel, met with King and one of Leonard’s people and Arcel told them they need to change the date. King told Arcel you get your boy in the ring or I will sue all of you and I will personally ruin you Arcel. Arcel was furious with Eleta and told him u screwed us royally. Eleta said said look if Duran loses King already guaranteed us a rematch and Duran will make even more money. Arcel told Eleta Duran don’t care about the money he cares about beating Leonard. Arcel told Eleta in all his years he never saw a manger set up his best fighter that was a champion to lose. Arcel told Duran they wouldn’t change the fight date. Duran said well I will retire then. Later on Freddy Brown Durans trainer and like a father to Duran told Duran the truth and if he didn’t fight King was going to ruin Arcel and Duran loved Arcel . So Duran fought but he was so weak from losing the weight from the drugs Eleta had a doctor prescribe Duran that Duran was shitting 5 to 6 times a day and he had bad stomach aches. After the weigh in Duran ate like a horse and he really got sick then . We all know what happened during the fight. Look at the difference in Durans body in both fights , the first fight he was ripped and heavily muscled. That is why Arcel didn’t abandon Duran after that because he knew Duran was set up by his own manager. Freddy Browns nephew is the one that told this story .
