Interview with Skylar Brandt | ABT | Thrown in the deep end | Making your own opportunities.

Hello Everyone! Today I have the huge honour of speaking with ABT Principal Dancer Skylar Brandt.
Skylar is one of the most driven dancers I have spoken too. Working on her days off, extra coaching sessions when she can squeeze them in. She always has seen value in 1:1 tuition and even as a pro ballerina will make time for it.
Skylar is a gorgeous dancer whose technique is flawless and has such mature artistic charm. Many of us can learn a lot from her.
Let’s meet Skylar!
I hope you enjoy the interview!

Really appreciate how open and genuine Skylar is! Honest about everything from her privilege to something small like wearing arch enhancers, just really refreshing to see. Even nowadays it feels like much of ballet’s ‘inner world’ still takes place behind closed doors, so thank you for helping open them up with these interviews!

Can you interview Mariinsky dancers like Masha Bulanova, etc? And Skylar is amazing 👏 😍 . My fave American prima so far

Lovely, really interesting interview. There just aren't enough superlatives to describe Skylar Brandt. So outrageously talented and disciplined, generous and humble to a fault. Amazing. "I was going to be the best tree I could be..." is surely a lesson for life.

Having a teacher that exposes you to "fall in love with the hard work and the challenge" reminds me of David Hallberg's beginnings in ballet too! Here's to all those amazing teachers who help us all strive to become better at our crafts. Long time fan of Skylar's and so great to hear she also chose to ground her technique in the Russians too. What an insightful interview, thankyou Isabella!

Interesting comment, feeling the difference between the dancey and refined romanticism, and quick footwork and more technical aspects of the role. I've always wondered how dancers cope with parts they're not naturally attuned to.

I adore Skylar even more now after watching this interview! Her family’s videos were one of the few highlights of the pandemic for me! It would be awesome if you could interview her mom and dad to hear their philosophies and practices on being supportive parents-both actual and surrogate-to artists. Thank you! 💕🩰

Yesss agreed! I absolutely adore these interviews with star dancers and I’m sure the big names help bring in views, but it would also be wonderful to hear from the people supporting dancers in various ways as well. Apologies if that comes across as entitled in any way - I don’t want to be demanding content from anyone! 😅 But I do think the type of thing you suggested could be very beneficial for younger dancers & their families, or even teachers & coaches.

I think she was alluding to the fact that young children didn't have those things. Skylar Brandt is 30 years old now and the first iPhone didn't arrive until 2007, when she would have been about 14.
