This guy truly epitomizes the spirit of a fighter pilot. He has more energy & vigour than many that are half his age.
First time I heard the blue note was Biggin Hill airshow in ‘72. (Detached from Kemble as an aircraft engineer, to help out at the show. Was there for a week, unloaded some nitrogen bottles and checked the oil on a Harrier.)This thing popped out of the valley at high speed and it wasn’t able to be heard until really close. One of my best memories.
"... It had anhedral, it had dihedral, it even had a touch of cathedral..." That is the greatest description of a plane I've ever heard!
What a top bloke, he'd be a legend to down a few pints with and pick his brain on 60s era jets. *Quality upload, more please !*

You are welcome
I must say folks the book is bloody excellent so well worth a read.
My father flew the Hunter he loved it ! The other aircraft he liked was F86 Sabre .
The Hurricane is so small next to the Hunter.
Great interview. Have to say the Brits seem to produce some characters. I am a Canadian and proud of the RCAF- more for it's history and what it has done rather then what it is today. However it is my firm opinion that the RAF is the finest air force in the world today.

I agree :)
Just great personal history and a very witty chap.
In terms of appearance, the Hawker Hunter is a very under-rated beautiful aircraft.
Nice to know not all pilots are math masters! what a nice guy. Thanks for the interview

Glad you enjoyed it.
I served on 237 OCUand had the pleasure of fitting the starter cartridges most mornings amongst other things, not so good when it's at lossiemouth and horizontal rain. Great aircraft to work on though
Another fascinating interview with an amazing guy, and thanks, Phil, I always wondered how the Hunter’s “blue note” was produced!
Congratulations on your publish! "Patrolling the Cold War Skies: Reheat Sunset" 2017 - my hard cover is incoming!
What a fine gentleman and an outstanding flier

That opening - thought I was watching the History Guy for a second
Great guy
He was my father's pilot on the Hawker Hunter.
A have two, large framed photos, one of Hong Kong taken from the North and one from the South, both taken by Canberra. Wonder if Phil took them?

You never know
Marmite! So, that's why I didn't become a pilot? And, I was an air cadet, too! I've never tasted Marmite? So, that's why my cousin joined the RAF and got to fly Lightnings and Phantoms? As for me? I spent 23 years in the merchant navy, being buzzed by Nimrod's in the middle of the North Atlantic. And, all it would have taken was to admit to liking Marmite? Well I never!
Superb, you could almost be thete,
I worked on that Harrier T2 and also Hunter FGA9s and one FR10 in Germany. Also Lightnings in Saudi but I hated that aircraft as it was terrible to work on. Very old technology with fuel leaks to suit!
Haha. Don't know if it's anything to do with the Christian name but I'd like to think if I could have been a fighter pilot (which I couldn't) Mr Keeble may be the template for my career, obviously if everything fell into place. Make the most of what you have. Top man Phil
Self- publish and I'll buy the first....
