Part 1 of 4
This interview was conducted after the movie was completed. It was originally included on the Japanese Laserdisc of Akira, released in 1993 by Pioneer LDC.
Questions
1. How did Akira come about?
2. What were your guidelines in creating the Akira world?
3. We're told that there are production notes for Akira. What's in them?

I love Otomo. He is such an interesting man with a very un-typical thought process for making anime. His art is also pure brilliance.
Best manga ever written and there's no anime movie more beautiful than this one and it was all done before I was even born. Amazing.

"all done before I was even born."-that's not really surprising. Most beautiful things were made long before both of us were born. Including XXth century art like best animations, best films, best graphic novels and so on.

"I'm not really sure how many pages it comes to now. It has to be about 2000, I guess." Damn, Otomo, you don't have to be so chill about it.
One of the great mangaka master still alive. Its a shame new generations are not like them.

What a humble guy. Most artists would never admit that their works are inspired and influenced by others that came before them.

The Duffer brothers do. All Stranger Things is is a retelling of all the amazing stories they loved a kids in the 80s. Yet the show is so engaging with very like able characters, it barely matters how original it is. Just because your story copies what others did, does not mean it is automatically a bad movie.
I'm reading the comic (EPIC) now, it's completely different from the movie I wish I hadn't put off reading it for so long! I'd highly recommend it to any fan.

@Jotaro97 The word epic is used to describe something grand and amazingly awesome, the OP comment wasn't just trying to compare it to a "Ancient greek literature" at all, it can be compared to that, but it's clear he wasn't saying that word for that reason at all.
He's such a talented filmmaker, It's a real shame he hasn't made lots of films.
Well... now I feel like re-watching Akira again. Thank you Katsuhiro Otomo!
This is my favourite film of all time. Thanks Otomo for creating this memory
He’s very laid back when he speaks but at the same time it’s impossible not to feel his passion for manga as a talks about it. Makoto Yukimura, the creator of Vinland Saga, gives me similar vibes.
It seems he came up with the general outline of the story, and some of the details, then his visual storytelling aspect just took over, like when he mentioned the single sentence leading to a dozen pages of illustration. Gotta respect someone who refuses to compromise their sense of visual design like that. He was a damn good director too.
He tries to answer the questions...I would almost kill to have those notebooks, and I completely understand why he was so uncomfortable even showing them. For Christ's sake, he even took time to write "Do Not Open" in English letters on the covers. Think about that for a minute. This man is not versed in English, as far as I can tell. Katsuhiro Otomo is a complete breed apart from most human beings, and you should all feel honored that he took even an hour or so out of his day to do this interview.

I reported you to the FBI, Interpol & Tokyo Metropolitan Police for threatening to kill Otomo. Your comment says alot about your personality. Disgusting.
It is obvious how very uncomfortable he is with doing interviews. He may have been thinking "In the time it takes to answer these questions, I could have..." he could have...yeah, it messes with my head. It is almost like watching...dammit, I love you, Otomo. I am honored to share the same air as you.
He must be a very nice guy, i wonder what his inspiration was for the whole Tetsuo mutation scene or the hallucinations. Wonder what he thought when he made that because that scene freaked me out.
Man. Went instantly into flow state when reading Akira Vol.5. Amazing creation/work!
大友克洋は近年、手塚治虫の全作品を読み返したという Katsuhiro Otomo also said that he read back all the works of Osamu Tezuka.
i am just starting this series.....i LOVE them ......thumbs up if you think this series is awsome
One of the greatest artists to ever grace earth
He wrote, pencilled and inked 200 (intricately detailed) pages a year for ten years, and in the middle, wrote, storyboarded and directed the feature film. I've drawn a few (very short) comics, and will never comprehend the dedication and perseverance he put into this project.
love this interview, this guy is truly a genius thanks sooo much!!!!

Otomo announced he's working on adapting a full Akira TV series that will closely follow the events of the manga. Stoked.
Currently watching in 2020.
LEGEND
Almost every film that's come out since was influenced by it. Not to mention animated shows like Batman the animated series. If it weren't for Akira, there would be no Matrix. It's just that simple.

I am an anime music video editor, to tell a story is difficult, he even said at first it would write it's self out but then it would change but at times the flow will come out flawlessly, this to me hit me because I would have no idea where I am taking a story but as you work on it the story will write it's self.

LEGENDAS PLIS
Do you mean the 'Quick Action Recorder' footage? The animated line art footage? 1, they aren't mine, none of this content is mine. I run a fan site and created this KZread channel because I'm THE Akira fan. 2, KZread took them down because once they were flagged as having copyright the owners of the content PIONEER/BANDAI told KZread to remove them. So unfortunately they can;t be re-uploaded.

Akira fala sobre jovens delinquentes que não são aceitos como eles são pelo sistema que os querem ajustar, sem respeitar as suas personalidades fortes, confiantes marcantes e espertas.

Chayson Dam Its called Short Peace and is an anthology film directed by him with shorts by him and a few other anime directors like I know the director of Tokyo Ghoul made a short in it too. Otomo's short is called Combustible and is a romance story in the style of old Japanese woodblock art. I also know there is game for the PS3 that's supposed to be like a fifth short to the film by Otomo and Suda51.

You know Kishimoto was purely inspired to created Naruto and sasuke because of Kaneda and Tetsuo, right?
