    Would it be fair to say that they can make great surround speakers?

  • @TheAudioBelle

    @TheAudioBelle

    Жыл бұрын

    @avh700, I don't think the woofers alone would be sufficient. I do think the system would still need a tweeter to help with the 10Khz plus range. These woofers do reproduce sounds up to 10Khz. But, if you had anything higher that you needed to reproduce, you'd need to add a tweeter. The clarity of the woofers does diminish the higher the sound being reproduced as well. They are capable of producing high tones, but it is not their intention. The cool thing about the fact that they can though is that it shows just how quickly the drivers can react, and that this prototype can keep up with the main speakers. Meaning, nothing would be lacking behind and be out of sync as far as the music or movie goes. The argument is that traditional subwoofers can be slow. For example, if you have a large subwoofer that can reproduce very low tones, going down to 20hz, the cone is larger and it takes more for the cone to move the air pressure in the room. A smaller subwoofer can react a lot more quickly, but will not get down to 20hz. Magnepan is making it happen by using multiple, medium sized cones that work together to create the dynamic range that allows them to get low enough, but also be quick enough, proven by the fact they can reproduce a drum's inner girth as well as its cymbals. ---Cynthia, The Audio Belle

    @54tristin, Wendell's explanation to me was that he is trying to be the John the Baptist of these prototypes, paving the way for them. I do see it both ways. And for the most part, my opinion is, why talk about it if there is no price or release date? It feels like a tease. But I also see the benefit of doing trials to gauge customer feedback to improve a prototype before releasing it, if it's positioned that way. It's just...this has been a prototype since 2019 from what I've read on forums. ---Cynthia, The Audio Belle

    The whole presentation was simply incredible. The Japanese Drums had me at the feeling that I could not just hear, but feel the skins vibrating. So, I knew I was in for a treat and was not shocked those yes very surprised art the 20-10000 K Frequency range. I don't think you'd need an LS17 etc some dipole Mid / Treble would work especially well.

    It would seem one will have to use the DSP correction for the entire bandwidth including the main speakers - not just the subs. This is due to the total signal delay through the DSP processing, which can be as low as a few msec but usually more. Studio musicians and many listeners will be able to detect this delay between DSP corrected woofers and direct main speakers. So an additional AD and DA conversion in the audio chain is unavoidable.

  • @jvburnes
    @jvburnes Жыл бұрын

    This is excellent information and a fun presentation. I would have liked to look at the sub drivers. If they are just using cones etc, then you might be able to achieve similar effects using any number of audiophile-grade subs. A high-speed dipole sub like the Linkwitz lxsub2 would probably work and would run somewhere around $1100 for two including DSP.

    Hi Chris I'm probably the only one in the whole world who doesn't need a subwoofer, I have the 2.7 and it runs with ease up to 25Hz, the problem is light on most amplifiers is my experience now. And I'm talking about the frequency range, Most amps taper off early and also taper off in the low frequencies. Against this, most loudspeakers have an amplification in the low end after 40 Hz by means of bass reflex or, transmission line. My tip is to borrow an Electrocompaniet amplifier somewhere, because it runs all the way through the entire layer and is extremely musical. because Magnepan is very neutral and needs such a sounding amplifier. A world will open up for you because that layer gives a lot of information between all the instruments that you have never heard before. And these differences are absolutely NOT available through a subwoofer, everything sounds a bit bassy and there are NO differences to be recognized from instruments that play in such a low range.

    @zardoz2627, Nope, it’s a prototype. I did not realize when covering the product that it had already been shown a few times a couple years back. Maggie's are hands down the BEST speaker you could get ROOM INCLUDED under 3k. Still need high current class A for them to sing, but ONE has something to build on, the new stands are genius. I'm sure " the contraption" is genuis. I don't know how I learned that, Maggie's need low end and mid band to wake up the highs of the LRS or MMG. And YES low end MUST have attack. Gets complicated for sure... alot of guys TRI amp these. But really nice to see these new triangle things. 🔺️

    After many years of ups and downs, my "last dance" speakers are Magnepan 3.7i s on Mye Engineering stands. I ran them for a couple of years with an Audio Research DSi200 integrated amp. With this combo, there seemed to be something missing. Somehow, they lacked the body and the richness that I had come to expect, especially with ARC gear. So after a bit of research, I opted for a used Bel Canto PRE-1 and a Bel Canto REF500S. Wow! The Magnepans came alive. They now had the body and the organic presence that I expected, along with their usual transparency and disappearing act. And with the Bel Canto hear, they were finally delivering decent low end. Now I'm intrigued by what I'm hearing about in this video.

    They don't need class A. You can run them with high quality Hypex or Purifi class D just fine. Dual mono Hypex nc400s are 400 wpc into 4 ohms. If you can build a simple PC you could build these yourself for around $1100 a pair.
