No one wants to talk about a time they failed during a job interview, but chances are this question will come up in some way, shape or form in your next interview. You might even be asked, “tell me about a time you made a mistake” or “tell me about a time you made a bad decision.”
Interviewers ask this question because they want to see if you’ll own up to your mistakes and failures and if you’ve learned from them. I had a fearless leader once tell me that if you’re not making mistakes, you're not doing your job. So don’t be afraid to answer this question honestly.
In this episode, you'll learn how to use the STAR method to tell a compelling story to answer this popular interview question. And can I just say, the sample answer I share is soooooo good! The four steps you'll learn more about in this video are:
Step 1: Choose a specific example of when you failed
Step 2: Show how and what you learned from your failure.
Step 3: Tell a story about your failure using the STAR method.
Step 4: Practice! Practice! Practice!

Exactly. It's not an ego thing or a "I'm just soooo good at my job I never make a mistake" thing but I've never had what I would call a notable "failure" in my working life to use as an honest answer. So then you have to BS something, which is nerve-wracking in and of itself. Saying "well one one I had a flub on a worksheet I had to quickly edit" isn't really a notable story.

I once bombed this question by talking about a time I actually failed with no redemption or growth story. Then I met a woman who told a horrible stories (losing her shoes). It didn't make me feel as bad.

Hi Heather, I came looking for a reasonable answer on question " Tell me about a time you failed". I'm just out from a interview and I was introspecting my answer. And, I Here's my answer. I recollected an incident/project converted into to story and divided them in to three parts in my mind, situation (the story) desired results (management expectation & outcome) Reason for failure /Learning. While, my answer was close to your video. I have a question. While I understand that there are no hard and fast rule to answer this question. Are we sure that the interviewer is looking for the same answer? Isn't this a little subjective question with no right or wrong answers? For example, what if a person who does not believe in failures? What if the failure is attributed to other factors, such as system /organization/management failure?
