Interview: David Sylvian by Che - 1988

David Sylvian was and is one of my all time greatest heroes in music. He and his band "Japan" are legend. The guy is as brilliant as he is shy.
I applied for one of his rare interviews and was quite thrilled, when he agreed to actually show up at our cosy little tv station, at that time based in the heart of Munich/Bavaria.
At that time Musicbox, which later became Tele5, had one tiny studio and on that day we only had one camera available in case you're wondering about missing close ups or cuts between the participants of this interview which I did, if I remember rightly, somewhen in late 1988.
The show I was hosting then was titled "off beat", which became somewhat of a legend in itself. Off beat featured little known and even less played independent music artists.
The clip that ran before our talk was Ruichy Sakamoto's "Risky"...

This clip was offline for a while due to copyright claims for the music videos that where intermitting the interview. I never meant to infringe anybody's copyright, specially not by showing music videos which technically are just artsy ads for pieces of music which may be purchased.
Anyway, I removed all of the videos leaving the bare interview, which I produced at that time. Since the original tape is lost, I made a copy of a VHS - thus the quality.
I hope that's okay with the many viewers I have already had on this channel with this interview and hopefully the many more to come.

one of my musical heroes as well. thanks for sharing this interview, enjoyed it.
Interesting format, facing forward on a sofa and then a translation . Nice . No subtitles, no voiceover speaking over someone . It teaches both German and English speakers a thing or two .Impressive . Nice interview as well . Great to hear about Angus McBean from David . That could be a whole interview in itself .

this would actually be in 1987, the Shamans tour was in spring of 88
still wearing them awful glasses he didn't need , remember Tin Drum they all had glasses on some kinda fashion statement I guess idiotic but love Sylvian ! ps He looks awful like he just came out of bed probably getting rid of the pretty boy image ( the most beautiful in the world still on google )
