Intervals On Guitar - Crash Course for Beginners

Музыка

Patreon: / fretjam
Intervals are the building blocks of music. If you've ever wondered what those numbers in scale diagrams mean (e.g. 1 b2 3 #4 6 b7 etc.), this lesson will explain where they come from.
I'll also explain why learning intervals is beneficial to your command of the guitar, giving you the ability to move musical relationships anywhere on the neck, without thinking about notes.

Hi guys. I'm aware this lesson covers what many of you already know. I've been meaning to do a lesson on intervals for a while and have been asked many times about what the numbers in my diagrams mean. So hopefully this gives anyone starting out with theory and scales some clarification. Please feel free to share this with anyone you know who may find this useful (thanks!). More on the way...

Many players have been playing for a long time and have never taken a look at how intervals work. I think it is awesome that you are doing this kind of videos. Your content is great, keep on the good work! I've already shared your videos with my band.

Ibanezguitars Check-out his website, in the video's description or in the small "i" in the right hand corner of the screen. Alternatively, Google "chord formula pdf": it's all odd number sequences, really, with flats and sharps thrown in the mix to get the desired "quality" (major, minor, diminished, augmented...). Exceptionally, "sus" chords don't use a 3 which will be replaced by the 4 (also called 11, when a 7 is in the chord). Also, understanding the guitar is very much about understanding "patterns of relationships" on the fretboard. A simple place to start for "harmonic" patterns is the CAGED system: you will understand how the 1-3-5 triad relationship recurs all over the neck, in different shapes, and serve as guides for harmonic meanderings and for your melodic runs. For "melodic" patterns, learn the various major and minor scale positions, on the fretboard. Same with the pentatonic (major and minor) scale positions. I'm sure this guy has it all on his site and you will be very well served starting your guitar journey with someone like this guiding you through that endless path.

I came to intervals late. Big mistake. If you really want to nail theory, then learn intervals first before scales or modes. They are very much the building blocks that scales and modes are made from. Again, it's quite easy, but that makes it obscure to learn. You can get by without knowing this, but you will always be lacking, always be coming back to this fundamental knowledge. Great lesson fretjam. You really are the best guitar teacher on the net.

+123ubuntu666 Thanks mate. The great thing about learning intervals is they connect what you hear to a spatial awareness of the neck, regardless of key and notes. The most challenging part of teaching this stuff is convincing musicians that this is worth their time, because it's one of those skills that subtley evolves with your playing once you've laid the foundations. It ends up working in the background and becomes almost subconcious. It starts off methodically, but eventually becomes intuitive. Even just a casual jam with fellow musicians becomes more fluid because you can relate the movements you hear to relative positions on the neck.

Before I came across your video here today, I had this video by Allan Holdsworth in my feed: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qainlK-wZrHIZdY.html He talks about learning scales and his way of doing things. He said that he didn't learn any scale with more than 4 whole steps in it. That's intervals for you! It's a great video, I don't know if you have seen it, but check it out if you haven't. I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to Holdsworth, but this was a great introduction. His father was a great musician, but Allan wanted to work things out for himself. The results speak for themselves. Anyway, that is a really interesting video. It's a really good primer on why any musician needs to learn intervals to start off with. It just makes it all so much easier really if you are serious about this. Great lessons fretjam. I love how you intertwine the higher theory with the fundamentals. Catching both types of players (beginners and more advanced). But always giving a reality check and a grounding in the foundations of it all, along the way. This lesson imho should be studied by anyone that thinks they know it all on guitar, just to check if they missed something. Everyone can learn something from this.

Within the last 5 years, I have become interested in it... I can't stress this enough everyone if it's boring to you like it was me force yourself to work on it at least 15 minutes a day, and if you are having trouble retaining or understand it read over and over and watch over and over again.

The explanations with the diagrams makes learning or brushing up on theory so much faster with a guitar in hand. Just want to say thank you for the improvements I’ve made in just a couple of days watching your videos. After studying at a conservatory I had my fill of theory and just wanted to play with feeling but now I’ve realized theory can be fun and exciters when applied to playing especially when in a rut. Hungarian Major = Mix #2 #4 or Lydian dominant #2 or Ion #2, #4, b7 The last mode 1........2.........3...4...........5.........6...........7...1 1........2............#3 ..#4........#5...6..........7....1 ( lydian augmented #3) The second mode loc b4, bb6, bb7 1........2.........3...4...........5.........6...........7...1 1 b2 b3 b4 b5 bb6 bb7 1 The 5th mode ion b3, #5 1........2.........3...4...........5.........6...........7...1 1........2...b3.......4................#5..6...........7...1

You say Major 2nd/3rd/6th/7th but Perfect 4th/5th/octave. Make a major interval smaller by a half-step, it becomes a minor interval. Make a perfect interval smaller by a half-step, it becomes a diminished interval. Make a perfect interval larger by a half-step, it becomes an augmented interval. So major/minor/perfect/diminished/augmented is the vocabulary to be implemented.
