I like that the son had reverse puberty with his voice. He starts off with a normal deep voice, and then gets Casey Affleck's soft squeaky voice.

Never ever have I seen such believable and devastating acting from a male actor in any movie, ever. In every other movie, the actor would hide his face and just do a grimace in an emotional moment. But McConaughey doesn't hide his face at all. He shows us his exact thought process and how vulnerable he is during all of this. From elation to see his son, to the slow and terrifying revelation that years, decades even, just passed, and he missed them all, to despair and longing to just go back and *be there* for his children. All while showing his entire face. Absolutely haunting performance.

I heard that this scene wasn't rehearsed. He was watching the video tapes for the first time while filming the scene itself and gave a candid reaction. They shot it a few more times but apparently, they used the first take itself.

To be fair the tapes were good tapes. If I had to method act they would have been perfect material to get into the role.

I’m not one to cry during movies, but this scene broke me. I don’t even have children, but McConaughey delivered this scene so well, I could actually feel his pain. Zimmer, Nolan and McConaughey really made an excellent scene here together (together with Chamalet, Affleck and Chastain)

To the black hole outside his window however, whose absolute power and gravity is the cause, it all pales in comparison. Christopher Nolan is a goddamn genius. Taking concepts like general relativity or extreme time dilation and spinning it into a conflict for the human characters to tell a story of a father separated from his children not only in space but in time as well. Really puts into perspective our human lifespans in comparison to celestial bodies like black holes and stars.

That is a great point. We are not ready to deal with these psychological effects. We are barely equipped to deal with loss of life. Now imagine the scale of this and the effects it would have to see everyone you know age and die in the span of days. I’d think the selection process for astronauts of this type of travel would be simple. Find people with little to no emotional ties to anyone.

Nolan has also confirmed that he wasn’t shown the videos before filming this scene. That means he did it all in one take with 0 prep or knowledge of the dialogue that was coming at him. That’s insane if true

The way Mathew shifts his acting in this scene is so damn good. The way he goes from smiling ear to ear to see his son again and then it turns into him sobbing uncontrollably as he realizes these messages are from 20 years ago on earth and his kids are all grown up is just heartbreaking. This movie was done so well and Mathew did i think his best acting job.

It would destroy me. I wouldn’t be able to watch my family just get older and older, getting closer to their deaths by the hour... Would drive me insane. That’s why I think that in the future, when our kind is capable of making such travels, only men/women who’ve got no one to lose should be selected. Cooper handled it like a boss but most men would do something stupid and reckless when put through the excruciating pain of watching those videos.

This shows how much of a joke the Oscars have become. This is single handedly one of the greatest scenes in cinematic history.

I think this Scene is like a mirror to everybody, it perfectly shows how high we value Time, but in a way of missing smth out. Imagining Years of your life is just gone in a couple of hours where you could see your kids grow, see how your family does, have fun, love and cry. Even not for a million you would skip this much of your live, imagine coming back and everybody you're caring for is just gone. Like you have nobody in a completely changed world, there is no more sense of "home". That is why I cried for the first and last time during this movie. Life hits different sometimes.

When the camera cuts back to Cooper after Murph tell him it’s her birthday, it’s so powerful. Not only is he crying, but it is clear he has been crying as soon as she came on the screen. He looks so distraught with the decision he has made. A wonderfully acted and emotional scene.

3:44 "Today is my birthday" The expression, " being brought back down to earth" hits so hard for Cooper's character and the audience. Nolan is a master.

***** western germany. they just didnt care at all where to put the pause, and it happened to be in the exact wrong moment. I was already starting to shed a tear when the blue screen came up saying "15 minute break", the whole audience was like "WWWWWOAAAH COME ON!"

Mathews performance for this is so fucking good he actually makes you cry when you see his son give him a grandson and lose that boy in a matter of minutes and he genuinely makes you feel so bad for the character

When I found out interstellar came out I asked my dad to take me & we went. I then found out it’s screening in an imax that’s almost 2 hours away and I asked if we could go to a couple of days later & the only available screening was 1 am and we went. That scene broke me. We went home at 5 am. I lost my dad earlier this year to covid. Seeing this movie with him twice in the cinema is my favorite memory with him.

Matthew McConaughey has really earned my respect. In the past, he was known only as this well-trained hunk with the sixpack. But in the last couple of years, he has taken some more serious roles, and this performance is just amazing.

Greatest film of this generation.

Its so excruciating when you really stop to think about the tremendous sacrifice Cooper made. Essentially gave his life away for the greater good of his species. Damn.

His sons first message made me cry . So innocent just talking about school like he expected him to come back and he just wanted to attempt to talk to his dad

I have never cried at a movie. Not once. Not even when I saw simba watch his dad die as a kid. This scene though, which I saw with college friends, gave me a tight feeling in my throat, and tears falling from my eyes. So did they.I guess it comes down to loving your parents, and all the shit they went through to get you to this stage, and no matter how much you fought with them, threw venom at them, or didn't agree, how much you'll miss them when they're gone.

Watch the movie Nebraska, starring Bruce Dern! If this scene made you cry (I did) because of your love of your parents and appreciation of their sacrifices, you'll definitely cry watching Nebraska. That's very heavily a theme of the movie, and is the most poignantly presented theme in the film

My whole theater lost it at this part. Wasn’t a dry eye in the room 😭

This is honestly one of the best scenes of any movie of that decade. I love the whole movie, but Christopher Nolan was a genius for coming up with this scene.

This scene really taught me that time doesn’t wait and time can be cruel and to enjoy every moment with those you love. Masterpiece of a movie!

This is, hands down, one of the most powerful scenes in filmmaking history

This background music was called stay. Because all he wanted was to stay his life with his daughter. All he wanted was to save their future so he have to leave them to find a new world . But he end up being trap & helpless in the space . He cried cause he promised he will return when he's at her age & he fail himself

The crazy thing is, I am 23 years old. To imagine a string of messages that are as long as my age, I can't comprehend that. It's difficult for me to imagine anyone watching that and not losing their mind.

Otter's Vintage All-Sorts not that I want to but I think it would be wild to go into a coma for a year or more and see what has changed when you wake up. Imagine all the movies, music, news, etc. that would have happened while you’re asleep for what feels like a few hours maybe. That would be a lot to digest

He is shocked when he saw everything change rapidly and he felt that he wont be needed anymore on the new society and develop cultural. it was terrible,can't imagine that

I love this movie soooo much. it always hits me right in the feels. it deserved everything.

The beauty of the movie and story of Interstellar is insane.

No matter how big the scale of the movie, whether it's Interstellar travel on an intergalactic odyssey or penetrating multiple layers of the subconscious to plant an idea, Nolan always prioritises the relationships between characters, their goals and their dreams as the beating heart of his stories and that's why his movies will resonate through time.

the part where he went from laughing to crying really hit me. this movie is amazing but idk if ill watch it many times again in my life because it was this sad.

I'm doing a „scientific“ paper on the movie, especially this scene. What I can say about this is that this scene is as heartbreaking as it is because, I think, all of us have felt similarly. Do you ever look back and think to yourself where all the time went, how can I be already this old when I was just 14 years old, how can my child that was a sleeping baby in my arms for one minute now be a college graduate, how could my life ever go on after the one person I loved so dearly passed away, when I couldn’t imagine doing so on the day they died. Now take this feeling and multiply it. Cooper was only on the planet for a few hours and decades went by without him. While we can’t remember how we got here, he literally wasn’t there. Now he has to watch his children grow up without him and watch them think he left them to die. He has no chance of making it right. He can’t go back in time. That’s why time is the true antagonist in this movie.

I was so glad I went and saw this in the cinema by myself. I could sob away without any of my buddies seeing me break down like a little girl. Unbelievable scene from an unbelievable movie.

+Tharushi l Yes they did. pay attention to that whole scene in the movie (not shown in this vid) but murph was around 11 I think when he left so if you add the 23 years due to the 3 hours in that plannet then she would be around 34 years old which is what she looks like. and when I say "they came back" I mean back to the station, where he sees his daughter on the screen not when she is super old at the end of the movie. I think that was due to the blackhole scene because of how strong the gravity was.

I watched this movie with my dad in theatres. I think ive never been so close to him and we didnt even talk to each other. Such a magical scene

I saw many movies and I think I can judge whether an actor gives a great acting performance or not and in my opinion this is one of the most well acted scenes of all time. McConaughey gave such a great performance. Not even an Oscar nomination? Pathetic.

2001 is, in my opinion, highly overrated. It is a technical masterpiece, of course, and we would probably have never seen movies like Star Wars without it. But, as opposed to other Kubrick films like FMJ and The Shining, A Space Odyssey feels pretentious (really, a 20 minutes opening sequence with God damned primates?). I know it is supposed to be metaphorical or a representation of the birth of mankind, but I think what is being told would better fit the essay than the film form. Again, it's just my opinion, you can love it as much as you want ;)

I don't think I would rank it as "best movie ever made" but it definitely deserves recognition and could probably be placed in the top 50 or 100 movies of all time. (I know "top 100" seems like it would be too easy to put a movie in, but just think of how many great movies have been produced!)

unbelievable good acting. This is exactly me, when I am surfing through my passed away loved ones' videos and photos.

The strategic cutting of the music at the end of the sons message... wow. It captures that stomach dropping feeling that he would have felt.

at 2:58 when the transmission ends, the music ends with it, that was so small but genius omg

I literally weep like I’ve lost a close relative when watching this scene. What a powerful moment. It is incredibly difficult to watch.

Multiple scenes in this film are among the greatest ever. Nolan’s favorite movie ever is 2001, and he made a better space movie himself. One of the most screwed over movies at the Oscar’s ever.

This Scene just shows us how scary the Universe actually is. Not scary in the meaning of Aliens and stuff...No...but scary because Space is so big and time, as we know it on Earth, doesn't really matter in the Universe anymore. Well the question is, if Humanity will ever be able to do interstellar travels...the chances are very low right now, but...we should never lose hope. But every Human who is willing to leave Earth to ensure the progress and survival of Humanity...will have my highest respect.

I think it's definitely possible, but probably not for a good few hundred years. We need to survive that long, not roast the planet or bomb each other to smithereens. The advancements made over the last 100 years alone are astounding, so I wouldn't completely write off interstellar/intergalactic travel. Four-dimensional space still has lots of unanswered questions, are there are undiscovered things out there regarding space-time that would probably rewrite a lot of what we know so far.

I saw this movie somehow alone in an IMAX theater. I have never cried so hard in a movie in my entire life. I was glad that I was the only person in the movie theater because this scene killed me.

I saw this movie with my buddies after we just had a few brunch/day drinks. Decided to randomly hit the theaters afterwards when we originally had planned to watch this the following day. Big mistake. I was crying so hard during this film. I couldn’t hide my sniffles as I tried to to look away. I love Nolan’s films, but didn’t expect it to hit me so hard. If I were alone like you, I’d probably would have let out an ocean of tears.
