Interstate 94 East

Interstate 94 is the longest Interstate in the nation not divisible by 5 and connects a lot of important cities. It's a personal favorite! Control City Freak is updated weekly and covers every two digit Interstate Highway in America. I'll be showing control city signs on each 1 and 2 digit (2di) Interstate Highway in the continental United States and will strive to make as complete a record as possible. I'll also be getting into the roadgeek weeds here and there, showing downtown skylines and state border crossings, and making corny jokes. I welcome all to join my geeky tour of every primary Interstate in the country!

I feel like the only way to come in Chicago is a tollway like, “Do you want to come this way? Then you have to pay a toll! You want to come this way? Toll! This way? Toll! Do you even want to go out and breathe in the fresh lakeside air and maybe smoke and ash if you live on the south side? Toll!”

I-94 was my favorite freeway as a kid, too. My grandparents lived off it in the Milwaukee suburbs and my dad's work was off I-94 in Waukesha county, so most of the exciting places you go as a young child-- to grandma's, to Dad's work to see him for lunch, to the city to go to the zoo/museum/etc (either to Madison or Milwaukee) were done on I-94.

The EB I-94 Minnesota welcome sign is about 1/4 mile past the Red River between the freeway and ramp for exit 1A! It's the same stone monolith as the other Minnesota welcome signs - one of my favorites. Glad to finally make it to I-94!

As someone who has worked in the car business, I’ve taken many trips on 94 to the Detroit metro area. It was only last year though that I actually completed its entire run in Michigan, driving west from Canada. I would have Sarnia and London as the Canadian control cities. I wager most folks going to Toronto will take the bridge at Windsor instead.

Notes: Kind of glad to be out of New England as well for a video. I skipped out on watching most of the New England Interstates when they came out since I’m not familiar with any of the Northeast (have never been). The Minnesota welcome sign is just ahead of the bridge at Exit 1A. Minnesota’s reputation for terrible control cities continues. However, it’s the only state that I know of (besides Oregon) to put mileage signs on overpasses. Imo, Milwaukee should get mentioned more on I-94 in Western WI since it’s the most likely destination for travelers from Minneapolis. Traffic on 80 in Chicago is always heavy and full of trucks in the middle of the day. Many states still use the same welcome signs that they used in the 80s. Looking at the sign, I kind of wish Michigan did so too. Theodore Roosevelt NP is one the the most underrated parks in the US.

I was just thinking about how bad Minnesota’s control cities are! Definitely Bottom 10 material right there, if not Bottom 5. The control cities on 90 and 94 are just abysmal almost all throughout. Also, you don’t miss a whole lot in the Northeast. We get one more trip to New England with 95 on the 2-digit interstates and that’s it. After that, it’s just Michigan, Maryland, PA, and NY before we get to Alaska and Hawaii. That said, we do get to see Rhode Island and Maine for our only time in 95, and at least we’re done with Vermont.

History I 94 mostly done in the 60s and 70s the last section to be completed was from the Minneapolis/ St. Paul Bypass I 694/494 to the Wisconsin Line in 1985. A lot of the expressways in the Detroit area are being rebuilt and expanded. It will be interesting when the Gordie Howe bridge is done. It would connect Ontario 401 with I 75 . This road is sort of a Northern Tier 05 Interstate without being one. Via I 90 and Ontario 401 & 402 it connects Seattle with Toronto and Montreal. It's the only east west Interstate number that enters Canada 🇨🇦.

I think why Eau Claire is signed is because as a city of 69,000 people and having a decent sized public university (UW-Eau Claire), it’s the only bigger city on 94 between Madison & the Twin Cities. Personally wouldn’t mind seeing Madison on those signs in addition to Eau Claire.

We've been to Michigan a few times, and went to Minneapolis twice. Seeing six flags, meant that you were almost close to Wisconsin, and then seeing the Mars Cheese Castle too. We would refer to I-94 as the tri-state tollway, then the Edens Expressway, Kennedy, Dan Ryan expressway, Bishop Ford freeway, and the Kingery expressway. The I-94 bend in Michigan can be quite a challenge during the winter months, because of the lake.

One thing I find funny about 94 in Milwaukee is that before it meets 894/43 near the airport, it’s going the exact opposite direction of where the sign says it’s going. Apparently they weren’t going to connect in the original plans, and planning started on them using the two different numbers. The plans were revised so that they did connect, but rather than reprint everything they continued using the two numbers. Also worth noting that 694 is the better bypass as it’s a lot shorter than 494, and also 494 had a gap in it into the 1980s whereas 694 was complete in the 60s.

Don't necessarily like the thought of signing Toronto on the last stretch because unlike the Montreal ones, Toronto is a hefty drive away. There is so much population centers between Port Huron and Toronto with that bridge being one of only 3 access points to all of Southern Ontario without driving around a great lake. I think Eau Claire is large enough to warrant being a control city on I-94; it's also where I-94 meets up with US 53 (which is a major route, at least to the north) and WIS 29 (which is a major route to the east, although they actually meet outside of Eau Claire). However, I don't know about the Osseo thing, that was weird lol. Maybe a double billing of both Eau Claire and Madison would've been better.

Spoilers, I-95 in North Carolina (no surprise to Todd) has really, really bad control cities. 95 Northbound is signed for Lumberton instead of Fayetteville, and after that, they throw in Dunn and Benson instead of Wilson or Rocky Mount (I also think from Fayetteville, I-95 North should be signed for Raleigh)! But that's all I'm going to spoil.

  • @SonicandHighwayDude401

    @SonicandHighwayDude401

Actually, they're not too bad. The good ones are at the US 74/I-74 Exit (Exit 13) where I-95 NB is signed for both Lumberton and Fayetteville (Lumberton being the secondary) and at the US 301 Exit for Kenly (Exit 107) where I-95 NB is signed for Richmond (When you're 31 miles south of Rocky Mount). However, the bad signs are at the I-95 Business Exit (Exit 40) where I-95 NB is signed for Benson and Dunn, and at the I-40 interchange, where I-95 NB was signed for Rocky Mount when it should've been signed for Richmond. (The sign was removed due to Construction, but it did say, Rocky Mount).

Greetings from Chicago and [New York]! I think that I-94 between Tomah and Eau Claire is one of the prettier sections. Here, we skirt near the Driftless Zone, and there are some rolling hills, interesting rock formations, and, of course, lovely dairy farms. I-94 near Kalamazoo is also a nice stretch. I find it interesting how the foliage is so different on both sides of Lake Michigan. For the urban sections, I like the Lowry Hill tunnel in Minneapolis and The Kennedy between The [I-90/94] Junction and Hubbard's Cave in Chicago. Take I-90/94 Kennedy and exit at Ohio Street feeders for great views of the Chicago Skyline!

The furthest I’ve been on I-94 was on the I-39/90 concurrency to Wisconsin Dells. Also notice how often I-94 comes into contact with US-12 too, as it’s the most frequent US Route it is concurrent with. Battle Creek as you know is where Kellogg’s world headquarters is, though they no longer give tours of the cereal factory unfortunately from what I heard. Also when you cross 8 Mile on I-94 it doesn’t go into the Detroit city limits yet. You cross into Wayne County, yes, but you cross into another Detroit suburb - Harper Woods. You cross into Detroit at the Moross Road exit (224A). Also I was wondering if you were gonna cover the M-10 (Lodge Freeway) interchange in the Westbound video, as it is very historically significant - the first completed interchange between freeways in the country. And possibly the exit for Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor. I did have those requests on my past Super sticker I believe. So you’re doing another ranking the state DOTs? Will that be for New England? Because we still haven’t been to Maine or Rhode Island yet.

The WI welcome sign is just beyond the first exit between the freeway and the tree line. The 494/694 split numbering is somewhat explained in the following way: if it were numbered as one highway when travelling completely around the directions would reverse themselves when driving through opposite sides of the perimeter. MN has the most confused drivers in all regards.

Quick note about the I94/US52 concurrency: Minnesota doesn't bother to sign said concurrency anywhere. My best guess is twofold with the concurrency being hundreds of miles long (thereby incurring great increases in signage cost if both signs were present) and 94 west of the Cities being the replacement / upgrade to 52 As for the lack of control cities in, well, the Cities, one following I-94 is likely to end in the Cities rather than follow I-35, US 52, or other roads too far out. I don't see much use in defining control cities within the heart of the metro area thanks to the 694/494 loop, but for what it's worth, the loop has control cities where it matters most

    1. US 52 between Jamestown ND and Minneapolis-St. Paul might as well be decommissioned. North Dakota could turn US 52 into a state highway. Minnesota is swift to seek deletion of one-state US routes (210, 371) and those duplicated on the Interstate for significant distances or at terminuses (8. 16, 61, 65). North Dakota has been slow to delete US 81 even such would be easy enough for what isn't shared with I-29. 2. Loops eastbound on 494 and 694 could have "Des Moines" and "Duluth"... or even "Wisconsin". 3. The obvious direction for US 52 from St. Paul is "Rochester". It could be either "South" or "East" as US 52 is a diagonal... or as Ohio does with US 250, "Southeast". 4. Detroit is by far the biggest city in Michigan, but practically all Michigan cities (UP excepted) are reached using I-94 (the biggest one not so reached is Adrian, not a big city). Cities that one logically uses 94 in part from Chicago to reach include Grand Rapids, Lansing, Holland, Muskegon, and Flint, as well as those on I-94. Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Jackson, and Ann Arbor (the Detroit metro area has yet to grow to reach Ann Arbor) stand as cities in their own rights. Dearborn has some interesting destinations, but it is part of Metro Detroit even if a very different world from Detroit -- and that is a huge positive in contrast to Detroit. Grand Rapids could be mentioned from the 80-94 split; it is the second-largest metro area in Michigan. So could mileage. 5. I am surprised that Michigan does not have signs near the 94/196 split (196 is as much a logical spur of 94 as of 96) suggesting that I-94 is the right choice for Lansing and Flint. Michigan does not mention intermediate cities on I-94 between Detroit and Chicago on overhead signs on I-94, but signs them on many on-ramps. .

During my 2022 summer road trip, I covered close to everything on this highway (some in different directions). The only segments I haven’t been on are east of the Zoo Interchange to the Marquette Interchange; between the Chicago Skyway and the south end of the Tri-State Tollway; I 69 near Battle Creek to I 75 in downtown Detroit (the longest segment I haven’t seen); and the last miles through Port Huron. Western North Dakota was stunning to view, but there was one ‘negative’ experience in the state. About a half hour west of Bismarck, I got pulled over because my windows weren’t in accordance with North Dakota laws. Once it was confirmed my windows were legal under Nevada rules (my home state), I was let go with a warning for the rest of my time in the state (was resting in Bismarck that night). Sarnia is about 3 times bigger, so it is satisfactory until close to the border. At that point, I’d leave the U.S. with London as the control; it and either Brantford and Hamilton or Kitchener and Guelph are BIG obstacles to pass before even APPROACHING Toronto. Besides, I can imagine there’s a big percentage of travelers going through Southern Ontario just as a shortcut around Lake Erie to Buffalo via St. Catharine’s. Considering that even by Canadian standards, these cities are pretty big (400k city in London and 500k city Hamilton), I don’t think signing Toronto is going to be helpful at all if west of London.

18:20 the original plan WAS to connect US 31 with the 94/196 interchange .... but they couldn't run 31 through a wildlife area just south of that interchange .... so 31 was shifted, and 94 was reconstructed from the new 31 interchange up to 196.

That picture of 80/94 with all of the traffic look like when I drove on it in February heading west to Chicago because I didn't want to take the Skyway. I also like the CTA lines running down the middle of Chicago's freeways. The Pure Michigan welcome sign gantry has another sign, which is hard to see unless you're in the left lane is that you are entering Eastern time zone. As for Detroit, I-94 and US-12 (Michigan Ave) meet one more time on the border of Detroit and Dearborn, where it ends in downtown Detroit. Also, the only reason that I could guess as to why I-75 doesn't have downtown listed is because about a mile west of this interchange there is another freeway interchange with M-10 (the Lodge Freeway) where the southbound sign lists downtown as the control. This interchange is also listed as the first freeway to freeway interchange Its full of left lane on and off ramps. Also, about a mile west of this interchange with I-96 is the more efficient way to head south to 75 from eastbound 94 (I-96 video isn't out so can't reveal spoilers). Basically in three miles you cross three freeways. I love your content. Now, if you will excuse me, I must jump on these highways that you speak of.

11:33 Since it isn't legal in Wisconsin, but is legal in Illinois. 12:02 Exit 8 A-B, but ISTHA is about as good with exit numbers as CalTrans - LOL! 12:18 Even though I-94 is on the left here, this is the original configuration for the interchange between I-94 and I-294. The mainline Tri-State Tollway follows I-294 with I-94 being the Edens Spur here. 13:00 You use Cicero down to Foster to get to the outbound Kennedy here. Except if you're in a semi. The rail viaducts are too low on Foster. 13:18 The north end of the Kennedy Expressway reversible express lanes. 13:49 That is Lake Street with the L on it. 15:16 Known as the "Steel Bridge". 16:01 Because the mainline stays with I-94 (Tri-State Highway) and I-80 exits. 16:48 As US-35 has been truncated to US-20 recently, InDOT removed the US-35 shields on Exit 40 B. 18:41 No longer Gd Rapids, ;-) 19:10 M-66. 19:30 Was US-27 with I-69 until a couple decades ago. 19:43 It's pronounced "M-14". M-14 is a freeway that will take you into the Jeffries (I-96) as an alternate to downtown Detroit. 20:22 Known locally as "Metro". 21:32 That's the toll plaza. You pay the toll on the near side and go through customs on the far side of the bridge.

You've already passed my current exit on your I-35 video but let's go with my former exit on I-95 (NJ Turnpike).. Exit 7A Interstate 195 (I'll probably request my exit off of that if you do 195 as well).. I'm curious what you think of the control city for eastbound "Shore Points" .. they recently changed it on the signs on I-195 to Belmar but on the Turnpike it's Shore Points

On visits to Chicago in 2002 and 2011, I remembered the signs on the Kennedy having the block number grid references posted on the signs along with the street names - for example, "Irving Park Rd 4000 N" or "California Ave 2800 W". It seems like IDOT got rid of them at some point - when did that happen? Anyway, that's too bad, because I loved seeing the block numbers on the signs! They're a big part of Chicago's identity, in my opinion, and I don't know why IDOT didn't want to continue playing along with it. Oh well!

  • @ControlCityFreak

Yeah strange they got rid of it. Seems like everyone in Chicago always knows the block number of each major street.
