Interstate 35 South (and 35W)

I -35 may just be the most Pan-American Highway of the US section of the Pan-American Highway, join me on a fun trip from Lake Superior to the Mexican border. Control City Freak is updated weekly and covers every two digit Interstate Highway in America. I'll be showing control city signs on each 1 and 2 digit (2di) Interstate Highway in the continental United States and will strive to make as complete a record as possible. I'll also be getting into the roadgeek weeds here and there, showing downtown skylines and state border crossings, and making corny jokes. I welcome all to join my geeky tour of every primary Interstate in the country!

    If they are going to sign an intermediate city location in Texas on 35E (,south of I-14 which meets in Templle) I would sign Temple & Dallas/Fort Worth, northbound and on the two branches and eventually just 35 southbound south of the Merge Temple/Austin. Waco is like signing Limon in a certain state and California using legacy signage of San Bernardino on I-15 and Los Angeles on I-5 as a nod to US-101 there. I would change it to East Los Angeles to more accurately reflect where you are actually going.) I think the Signing of Sacramento on I-5 northbound in Greater Los Angeles is a stretch in spite of the fact that you actually go to Sacramento eventually,) the signs on LA on both 5 and 405 should have Bakersfield as a control city if you are going to be consistent. I-15 should be double or even I would make a case for a triple control city, San Bernardino/Rancho Cucamonga to reflect the split, then once you get to.thw 210, you should put National City/Downtown San Diego reflecting the fact that within Greater San Diego I-15 splits into.National City and Downtown bra two branches. Also I would like to.see CA 163 which is largely built to interstate standards as I-315. There is an unsigned remnant segment of the former US-395 route that has 3 exits on it that operates as part of Kearny Villa Road, and is built to Freeway Standards between Miramar Road and SR 163 . Also I-15 north should be signed as Corona/Riverside from National City to the 91, then just Rancho Cucamonga/Hespetia then Hespetia/Barstow to reflect two Junctions (CA 58 which may eventually become I-40, which should be jointly signed as I Bakersfield/Los Angeles as the Kern River Freeway may eventually be constructed as the already constructed portion is constructed as an interstate grafe bypass of downtown Bakersfield. Then they could build I-40 together with I-5 from just south of Button Willow up to Tracy and take the 580 to Oakland go through the wrong way concurrency with I-80 then over the Richmond/San Rafael Bridge to San Rafael and Mill Valley to connect to.US 101 north of San Francisco, with I-40 west once into Marin County being signed as 40 West Santa Rose/,Ukiah as the northbound lanes would be defaulted into Northbound 101. Southbound, the control City off US 101 would be Richmond/Oakland, Then Oakland, Tracy, Bakersfield, Barstow, Needle, Flagstaff/Phoenix (reflecting the I-11 concurrency), Flagstaff, Albuquerque, Amarillo, Oklahoma City, Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville, Winston Salem, Greensboro, Raleigh, Wilmington. The signs westbound in Albuquerque should have Bakersfield as a fourth line.i would sign. i-40 West as National City rather than LA because you are defaulted into I-15 South, which as you mentioned many times does not travel anywhere near Los Angeles At one time, and I can understand why LA was signed, I-15 had two separate disconnected segments, one from National City to downtown Corona and the other from the 60 to Las Vegas, etc). This explains the use of Riverside as a destination and the use of CORONA/Los Angeles as 15 on the west side of the valley was originally CA 71 and Los Angeles reflecting that road previously having a concurrency with CA 91 through Corona and 71 ended at a Y Junction just north of the 10 on CA 57 (nee- Interstate 210)

    About 20 years ago, they used to have a 35 South sign with the control city of "Denton" just north of Hwy. 82 as you're traveling southbound on 35 from Oklahoma. I think they use Denton because that's where 35 splits into 35E and 35W.

Such a small town but with a lot of midwestern heart(you can read that several ways LOL). We stayed in a motel that is usually just a truckers' inn, so when I told them we'd be there for 5 nights, I think the clerk almost fainted. It was a stressful reason to be there, but I was probably the most relaxed I'd felt in my life while in that town. And yes, we ate at the Dinner Bell!

    I think Waco would be fine in most other locations, but because Austin and DFW are only 3 hours apart, they should sign the big cities. Agree Austin being huge is fairly new, but it's been over 500k since the 90s and it's always had the state capital and the largest university. If Waco happened to sit halfway between, say, El Paso and San Antonio, then it should absolutely be the primary control city in both of those.

    Hi, Todd! Enjoy the content. At 3:04, while one could make an argument for Madison as a control city for 35 North, La Crosse is the correct choice in both directions, especially southbound for a couple reasons. 1) La Crosse is the first city of a decent size once crossing into Wisconsin 2) If one were heading to Madison from Minneapolis/St. Paul, one would not be taking 35 South to 90, however one would most likely be taking I-94 East, as this is a straight shot. In addition, 90 eventually meets up with 94, so one'll be on 94 entering Madison either way.

    You might not notice or care about mileposts, but note that 35E (in both places) is the main stem of 35, with mile markers and exit numbers continuing, where 35W starts at 1 on the south end. Must be a rule somewhere about that. Also, at 39/90/94 near Madison, they follow 90, which is the only principal interstate, but also lowest principal. Do you know of any concurrencies of two principal interstates (ending in 0 or 5), and which one continues?

  • @ControlCityFreak

    @ControlCityFreak

    35/80 uses 80s. 55/70s uses 55s, but up until a few years ago they were the same. Interesting that on 64s many concurrencies, they never use 64's milage. On the 35Es, I don't think its a rule, they just default to Dallas because it's bigger and St. Paul because it's the capital, but I don't know for sure. Kinda surprised WisDOT doesn't use 94s, since MSP-Milwaukee is a way more important connection than La Crosse-Rockford.

    @@EvoLeef That's true, but always wondered why the didn't do a 235 or 435 loop that covered the lesser city and just looped back to the main I 35. That's how they do it in other places.

    @@scpatl4now There's not really a lesser city, they are both big cities and each have their own loops. Dallas has 635 and FW has 820

    I don't think there's really any other metro areas with 2 principle cities in the same way as these two. SF-Oakland, but there's no odd numbered interstate in the metro to split (though 580 and 505 used to be 5W). Miami-Ft. Lauderdale could maybe qualify, but there's no even numbered interstate to split. Baltimore Washington used to split 70 but then 70S was changed to 270. Maybe AASHTO made them change because the routes don't meet again the way the 35s do? Not sure.
