Lot's of plans work when weather goes your way. Keeping your soil healthy, or even improving it when the weather won't comply takes a good plan and consistency. Keep up the good work!

Hi Jay. I’ve been watching a lot of your content. Makes me excited for the future of agriculture, Especially in these uncertain times we’re in. Have you done any research into bio pesticides? Just asking because since your getting rid of the synthetic fertilizer for the most part.. next question would be pesticides in a no till system. I feel like the holy grail of broadacre farming is no till organic while keeping similar yields and returns as conventional.

have you tried a buckwheat mix? If you have chickens, geese, or ducks on that land you can get them to clean up the seed. We also need to change it so you can insure covercrops interseeded.

Hey Jay, thanks for the quick update. Do you think there would be an advantage to using winter crops for covers to continue the living root activity into the spring before seeding? Or do you like how the winter terminates the crop? Winter camelina is an interesting one to me as it is a low seeding rate (7-8lbs/acre) so would be fairly cost effective even though it is a brassica. Other ones like alfalfa, winter peas and lentils are also interesting.

Maybe you'll explain this later, but even though the cover crop froze out was it the soil health that kept you from needing to spray for the mites? or when the cover was growing it created what was needed to suppress the mites ?

1 of 2 possibilities Predatorial insects don’t like plants high in sugar. Healthier plants have higher sugar content Or There were lots of lady bugs and bees in the corn that had cover crops in it.

@@youngredangus6041 Thanks for your reply. I never thought about it until I saw another farmer mention he was thinking about trying it. I think it relates to neighboring plants shading each other during the day. But one has to ask, where is the sun. I know it sounds counter intuitive but in the summer when corn is growing, and the sun is higher azimuth in the sky, there will be more exposure to the direct sun throughout the day and in the morning and evening hours if planted north to south rather than east to west. Only at noon will there be more plant to plant shading if planted north to south. If planted east to west, there will be plant to plant shading all throughout the day except at noon. A house should always be oriented long-wise east to west rather than north to south to maximize heating in the winter and minimize solar heating in the summer. In the winter the sun is low in the horizon so a house oriented east to west will expose more surface area to the sun. In the summer when the sun is high in the sky, the sun will hit less surface area of the same house. The same should apply to corn rows. More sun, more exudates and nutrient cycling. A shoe box and flashlight can demonstrate the effect. Of course to save top soil, planting on contour is best practice.

Any thoughts on why there were less spider mites in the interseeded vs non-interseeded? More predators? They were very random here. Some fields would have them terrible, others hardly at all.

I’ll cover that in a future video It could be 2 things. 1. insect that attack plants don’t have a pancreas. So they want to eat plants that have a low sugar. Healthy plants have a higher sugar content. 2. More predators.

The spider mites are an indicator of poor plant health. Poor plant health (insect or disease) is an indicator of poor soil microbiology. Restoring the soil microbiology, improves the plant health and in turn the insect and disease problems go away. The interseeding promotes a diversity of beneficial microbiology below and above ground over what a single species plant by itself can promote (non-interseeded). More exudates feeding the microbiology, more predator-prey nutrient cycling and sharing, better plant nutrition and healthier, insect resistant, disease resistant plant. Plow down or spray down 1 time and all that is destroyed. Back to weeds, stressed plants and opportunistic pests, water loss, carbon loss, nitrogen loss. Another spray-on application of his Johnson-Su extract would have been beneficial / will still be beneficial in the problem areas. Sometimes you have to cover the above ground plant with an application. I have seen some farmers inject the extract through their pivots.

The aggregation on that turnip looked pretty good. First rain, easy 2 inches of water absorption that would otherwise run down the river. The microbiology don't die, it just goes dormant until the first moisture event wakes it back up. They can lie dormant for hundredes of years. Not their first rodeo. Then you be ahead of the game. I'll write my congressmen and help work on the insurance issue.

@@flatsville9343 I don't know. I will just write my congressmen and tell them the issue. That interseeding seems beneficial because it helps promote the soil health principles and other benefits like reducing climate change and improving nutrient density, that some farmers want to try it but they are reluctant to try it because of the insurance issue because if they do they can no longer get crop insurance (reasons unknown Jay did not say) and maybe lifting the restriction can be added to the farm bill. They do seem to listen from time to time.

@@dougayers7517 You may want to contact the good people at Civil Eats to see if the know of any model legislation or might try their hand at writing some. Few electeds in the US Congress have enough background to write permaculture legislation or amendments to a Farm Bill. Best to hand them a draft bill they & their staff can file & work with.
