I understand that the most popular, and suprisingly, the most liked theory about this song is that it is about Rosemary and Fred West. Infamous serial killers from the U.K. who luckily got what they deserved for what they did to those poor, young women. But... I can't be the only one who thinks the song's not about them ( before you crucify me, I used to wholeheartedly believe the Rosemary/Fred West story). My theory is that the song depicts the relationship between two drug addicts ( well, one prolly got sober ) slowly spiraling into the very depths of psychosis as they slowly lose touch with reality and, most depressingly, themselves and the love they have/had. "It's the smiling on the package" : Tabs of LSD have historically been labelled with the now-iconic, albeit creepy smiling face. "The faces in the sand" sound like a bad trip to me lol. Also when he talks about making revisions to a dream, while she waits in the van, I thought of those 1960's hippies who live in vans with their girl and get high and fuck all day 😂😂😂 "When your friends they do come crying tell them now your pleasure's set upon slow release": His girlfriend's friends/family are trying their best to encourage her to get clean and better her life, but her only route to pleasure, (other than the guy) is drugs and the euphoria they provide. There are also drugs known as slow-release drugs meant to stabilize ppl with mental illness, so ironically, drugs meant to better her condition are slowly eroding her life. "Sensitive to fate, not denial..but hey who's on trial ?": Although a junkie, they are both lucid enough to realize that they are ruining their lives and their "fate" scares them, but they are more than willing to avoid addressing this concern to chase their next fix. Paul Banks (lead, songwriter) layers alot of Legal/judiciary metaphors in the song and the "trial", may be the scrutiny and judgement he/she/both feel due to their lifestyle, OR it may actually be a literal trial for possession, distribution etc. He may have been caught, and will now take all the blame, despite her being just as guilty. Or like I said, a trial and jury could be a metaphor for being judged by others maybe even her. "But Hey, who's on trial?" Could then be a rhetorical question. He's saying: you did just as much dope as I did, but now you and your friends and my friends are talking down to me like your all so perfect. "It took a lifespan ( or a life spent ? ) with no cellmate, THE LONG WAY BACK. Sandy, why can't we look the other way/ Your weightless, you are exotic, you need something for which to care./your semi-erotic, you need someone to take you there". : He may have gone to prison for getting caught with drugs. Withdrawl sypmtoms would kick in, since he wouldn't have access to any dope. Withdrawl is psychological and physically, agonizing, so much so, that a few weeks without a fix could feel like decades....or a *LIFESPAN* and now sober, he's back to be with his cellmate which is purposefully pronounced as "Soul-mate". Also, he could be implying that he experienced a form of "ego-death" while getting sober and he believes he "died" and was reborn into a new life. Thus, he already spent his entire life and it ended before his eyes. He took the long way back, comparing the road to recovery to the process of resurrection like Jesus or a phoenix. He is trying to convince her to get off drugs, as they almost destroyed him. He is encouraging her to look the other way (like those corny D.A.R.E ads our parents would watch when they were teens) and avoid these substances. His pleas become increasingly desperate each time, as he compiments her beauty(you are weightless, you are exotic) tries to convince her that the love they had ( she has something/someone to care for...him) is enough, and when that fails he appeals to her sexuality. "Semi-erotic" sounds like drugs make her horny, and he could "take her there" *wink wink* if she lets him. His final plea, "Why can't we just play the other game" could also be a reference to sexual intercourse, as the pleasure ( and endless desire )one derives from sex is comparable to getting high. Or the "the game" could be a normal, mundane life. Paul is implying that being a junkie and a normal sober person are "games" we play to escape our deep-seated knowledge that we are mortal, flawed beings. The most convincing line is probably, "is this motion everlasting or do shudders pass in the night ?". It sounds like in a desperate attempt to prove his love to her, he got back on drugs. She finally starts being more intimate and holding him tight and gently, which further encourages his downward spiral. Shudders are another symptom of withdrawls, and he wonders if they'll pass as long as she holds him at night. Just when everything is going great and they are getting high and having sex all the time, the shudders return to remind him that their lifestyle is not sustainable and will eventually end in tragedy. He also realizes that depsite their relationship regaining it's spark, both of them are slaves to their drug of choice and the love they have for one another cannot triumph over their obsession with getting dope. The entire song, beginning to finish, is him slowly realizing that him and his girl will never be able to have a healthy relationship, they have become slaves to their darkest impulses, because they refuse to "look the other way" or "play the other game" even though deep down, they both know they should. What Interpol is implying then, I believe, is that "Evil" is not a monster or ghoul or devil or corporation or dicator or even the crimes and sins we commit as people. True evil is knowing what is right, and valuing your own desires so much, that your refuse to do what's right. So there it is, my super-complex theory about the meaning of "Evil" by Interpol. A THEORY.... remember that. If you read to end, I love you ♥️

Rosemary Heaven restores you in life You're coming with me Through the aging, the fearing, the strife It's the smiling on the package It's the faces in the sand It's the thought that holds you upwards Embracing me with two hands Right will take you places Yeah maybe to the beach When your friends they do come crying Tell them now your pleasure's set up on slow-release Hey wait Great smile Sensitive to faith, not denial But hey whose on trial? It took a life span with no cellmate The long way back Sandy, why can't we look the other way? We speaks about travel Yeah, we think about the land We smart like all peoples Feeling real tan I can take you places Do you need a new man? Wipe the pollen from the faces Make revision to a dream while you wait in the van Hey wait Great smile Sensitive to faith, not denial But hey whose on trial? It took a life span with no cellmate To find the long way back Sandy, why can't we look the other way? You're weightless, you are exotic You need something for which to care Sandy, why can't we look the other way? Leave some shards under the belly Lay some grease inside my hand It's a sentimental jury And the makings of a good plan You've come to love me lightly Yeah you've come to hold me tight Is this motion ever lasting Or do shudders pass in the night? Rosemary Oh heaven restores you in life I spent a lifespan with no cellmate The long way back Sandy, why can't we look the other way? You're weightless, semi-erotic You need someone to take you there Sandy, why can't we look the other way? Why can't we just play the other game? Why can't we just look the other way?

A modern day masterpiece. So many analytical interpretations of the lyrics. They may be right. All I can say that with my knowledge of music and musicians, the meaning of the song tends to be quite simple. Think of Smells like Teen Spirit or Seven Nation army. An idea or a couple of lyrics or melody the writer has can turn into a masterpiece. The lyrics in Evil just sound so good. If they hadn't called the song 'Evil', it would have got a lot more radio play time and be recognised as a modern day masterpiece.

Look, I know this song is about Fred and Rosemary West. However, I find this song to be an absolute bop. Also, murder ballads shouldn't be put on the highest pedestal of "Its music you can't associate with other things.". Mainly because murder ballads in of themselves are exploitative by design if you REALLY think about it.

It may be intended to be about killers. Idk. For me its about hopelessness and loss. Theres a decision that has to be made or an understanding that is not had to want to harm others on top of great feelings of loss and seclusion. I feel the sentiment of this song. Its a sad reality for some

Music can envoke different emotions. If someone associated this song with a serial killer couple. Interesting. If someone else associates this song with a fictional character. That's great too. Evil can be about plenty of things depending on who you ask. And there's nothing wrong with that.

Very late, but I think it's the daughter/Fred and Rose's daughter that was an unfortunate victim to her parents, that managed to escape the wretched West's household, told the court, which ended in Fred and Rose's death sentences, which the lyrics referencing Fred is probably trying to convince Sandy but oops, too late. Actually I think this song is about the days after Sandy escaped the household and this song is just all about the days before Fred killed himself, trying to convince Sandy but knows Sandy is too old to be lied to, so he prayed to God to allow him and Rose to heaven.

The cool thing about Interpol is that some of their songs have dual meanings. For example, PDA can be interpreted as being about someone in denial about their failing relationship or about a guy eho drugs and takes advantage of women. Similarly, this song has been confirmed to be about Frank and Rosemary West, but if you dont know who the name "Rosemary" refers to, it's just a song about drug addiction. I feel that the dual meanings exist so some songs have a "radio friendly" interpretation.

I think its about the evil in instant gratification. - "tell them now your pleasure's set upon slow release" Consumerism has humanity distracted, everyone of us is guilty of focusing our attention and time on things rather than ourselves and each other. When the good people at heart are able to fulfill their potential to impact the world, it becomes a better place. The way we look at money and things limits our potential for good. I dont actually think this song is about those grossass serial killers, it kind of feels like its talking about life in general? It also feels like it's dealing with regretting decisions which are inevitable In life (Heaven restores you in life- why cant we look the other way?) and feeling Evil from those mistakes (like for example, the music video having a car crash with the lady not waking up) and about having to move forward and keep living through life the best you can to the full extent
