@bobbin321 We are a bit reserved, that is true. But I'm also very certain that, should you go to Leuven, you will have Belgian friends in no time!

Hmm this is why I'm a bit nervous about choosing Leuven as my first preference. i've met quite a few Belgians while travelling and the Flemish Belgians are generally very, very shy. I wouldn't want to only make friends with other international students, I want Belgian friends too!

Yes I was a student in this university and I couldn't believe that such close minded community can exist just few kilometers from Brussels! As for buddy program and also getting help from Flemish students!, forget that, I applied to this program and they assigned a fellow Iranian as my buddy! , and until the end of my studies I only dreamed of getting to know even one Flemish student!, they were simply avoiding any friendly contact, therefore you have no other choices than to go to Pangea to meet some of the international students. So even as I took the initiative, at the end it was just one of my worst experiences. Not to mention the harassements and insults to my nationality by some of my professors.

While the KU Leuven administration really tries to portray it as an international university but in reality is quite the opposite. Placing a group of smiling Asian students at their orientation pages every time doesn't makes them welcoming international university. If you are an international student, be ready to be discriminated in academics as well as outside the university. So far Flemish students are concerned, the are reserved and like to be that way. Trust me, they can never be your friends nor they are welcoming people. I must say that unfortunately the racism still prevails in dutch society although they will not let it visible while you are in or around university.

I remember talking to a Canadian student who was working in a Leuven bar while she was studying in Belgium. In the illegal black and tax free economy, of course. I can't remember the exact amount she paid for her education in Belgium, but it was peanuts. When she told me she said "what is not to like"?! Well, those of us working and paying 63 percent income tax (including social contributions) know what is not to like. No more, like many I am out of there. Yea, it's charming, the beer is great and if you want something for nothing like living on unemployment benefit or sickness benefits for some dubious illness, spending your life to the age of 26 to get some useless degree in in Medieval literature and then whine and having to wait a year for your unemployment benefits, it's the place to be.

Go check now many non-EU students pay for their tutions. ;) Also, your taxes? KU Leuven is a private university, what are you even on about. And if someone wants to take a medieval degree, who are you to judge?
