Nope, the Band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines are a dedicated band unit that perform whilst not on operations. Whilst on ops, most of them are medics or truck drivers or stores personnel etc. They all go on deployments and are all fully trained soldiers.

2002年に開催された、海上自衛隊創立５０周年記念国際観艦式の一環で行われた、参加国の軍楽隊による横須賀市中パレードですね。 英国海兵隊軍楽隊の演奏、格好いいです。 惜しむらくは、英国の艦艇が東京港入港直前に座礁事故を起こして、観艦式に参加できなかったこと。 ぜひ、見たかった。

Little late seeing this (LOL), but one has to remember the JDF band is their premier band, the RM Band is as well, shipped over for this event, but the US Navy band is the band from Yokosuka, not the premier USN band. Good job by all though, lots of fun!

The music is first UK Royal Marines playing Eagle Squadron by Alford second US Navy playing Anchors Away third Japanese Navy SDF playing Warship March

@@Richard500 roger that! They broke American law to do so, but of course they were never prosecuted. Once we joined the war they transferred to the US Army Air Corps (later Air Force)

@SpeedyNeutrino43 Not to bash on the US Navy band as they are good, but they don't tend to play anything but Anchors Aweigh whilst on parade, whereas HM Band of Royal Marines will play alot more than just Heart of Oak or Life on the Ocean wave

the Royal Marines are unique ( as I understand it) in the British Forces as they are the only service not to have an official medical branch. They use the Royal Navy for doctors, dentists, chaplains etc, but they don't use Royal Navy medics. in the British Army there is the Royal Army Medical Corps (along with other medical units) and the Royal Navy has the surgery branch (etc).

The British band here seems to be a professional dedicated band unit. The other bands look like ordinary troops who fill in as a band on occasion. The USN troops were all in ordinary Navy uniforms. The British band unit all had special band uniforms.

HM Royal Marines uniform isn't 'special'; that's how they turn out for any performance (weather permitting, when the uniform changes)

Out of these two videos thought the Japanese Band was the best with a tie between the South Korean and Royal Marines. As a Retired US Navy man I was very disappointed by the performance of our band.

Bob Sit All respect to America but America has never had any marching style. Its embarrsing really. More so the people that try to defend it by saying that if 'you march your fascist and that they concentrate on actual fighting, not parades.' Some of the best trained militaries in the world march incredibly. There's no excuse.

So actually they are somewhat of a dedicated band unit, subject to regular duty call ups.

In this case they are the only band service in the RN because of budget cuts and overstaffing in the early 1900s. It was decided then that the Royal Marines had the best band so should take over all official band duties.

Pretty interesting. thanks for posting. I feel a little bad for the U.S. Navy becuase we used to have a really nice uniform. But it lessened in tradition and looks. For exsample the hat used to be a blue wool flat one.(it looked like the brits white one but blue and wool. But thats just one mans oppinion.

Gunkan is generic - it means like patriotic military. The title of the march is Warship March.

@we3575 I make no assumptions at all. I am told by Americans who I believe are ex US Military bandsmen the fo;;owing. “ 0404alan--Thanks for the information. I am interested in the british military and enjoy finding out the detailed information such as you provided. Thanks so much. I find it interesting that all the band members serve dual roles and make deployment with the regular troops. Not so here in the USA. They have only one (MOS) military ocupation specialty.”

I wonder why the British band carries music with them when they march. I'd think that a band of that type would memorize the music the way we had to when I was in my college marching band. Notice that many of the bands had their music memorized. Reading music as you march is a hinderance to precision.

I think all the unwarranted criticism of the USN band is from one thing.......envy. Most powerful navy in the world. How many nuclear powered aircraft carriers does the Royal Navy have in service? The USN has nine.

Why have a huge naval force with millions of nuclear warships, when you can send a small inflatable boat with 6 Royal Marines in it to deal with a situation. Also I don't think the Royal Navy can "envy" the US navy seeing as they get on so well.

Royal Marines can serve as medics? The USMC uses the USN "corpsmen" (or as genius of president like to call them corpse-men) rather then having a field medical service of their own.

I have two of the " Donald Duck" covers.They one belonged to my geandfather and his brother who served in the navy in WWII I got a photo of both of them wearing them when they were on leave in 1943

Gunkan is the Japanese word for an Imperial warship, sometimes translated as "battleship". The title of this Japanese march is 軍艦行進曲 or gunkan koushinkyoku which is Warship March in English

Technically perfect, just like the Japanese themselves, but, to my western ears, they could have put a little more emotion into it.

No, it's not. It's because most people don't realise that the Band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines is a dedicated band unit that spend most of their non-operational time on music, but the band shown here from the US looks to a casual observer to have come off a ship in port after being formed for just that ship. This makes the Royal Marines better practised, is all. It has nothing to do with the number of ships or size of the navy.

@VictorLepanto Re your comments on the Band of the Royal Marines. Unlike American military bands, who are just musicians. ALL British Military musicians are dep0loyed on general duties (non musical) as any other military personel. So no your comments are not valid.

@LordWellington15 Just saying man, but that first question "Who was the most powerful navy?" Was is the key word there. Rome was the most powerful empire. Germany was run by the Nazi party. Was doesn't mean still is. I still respect the British Navy, but today there really is no true powerhouse of the seas as every country seems to pretty strong now.

どの国も軍旗じゃなくて国旗に統一してるから、単純にどこの国か分かりやすくしてるだけでは？（ぱっと見ロシア海軍とか分かりづらい）

My Review of this: 1. South Korean Navy Band 2. JMSDF Band 3. US Navy Band 4. Royal Marines Band The Royal Marines were definitely the best dressed, however THEY REALLY COULD HAVE PLAYED A BETTER MARCH LIKE TRAFALGAR MARCH OR GIBRALTAR MARCH AND THEN THEY WOULD HAVE WON. LAST PLACE: putin's naval band, they weren't even a band it was just noise pollution. putin's naval band are a bunch of clowns just like putin himself. This review is for both pt 1 and pt 2.

NOOO! I ADMIT! I was too harsh on the Royal Marines. Their sound quality was really good and also The US navy band rendition of Anchors Aweigh was too short and that was a personal favourite of mine. So my final ranking is Royal Marines 3rd and US navy band 5th, French navy takes their place at 4th.
