International Hand Launch Glider Festival Documentary By Paul Naton

www.radiocarbonart.com/ In celebration of the 25th running of the Torrey Pines Gulls International Hand Launch Glider Festival, I'm posting my one hour documentary film on the event, filmed in 2000, for the soaring world to enjoy. In fact the contest we filmed was to be the last one to incorporate the Javelin launch technique, and you can see in the film a few pioneering competitors tip launching the first DLG designs. By next years contest, nearly every pilot had changed over to the discus launch technique, and the handlaunch glider took a giant design leap forward. There’s a special feature at the end of the film where the pioneers of the discus launch technique discuss how the spin launch developed and how DLG glider designs developed. This film will only be online for a short time.

Great to see some footage of javelin/grenade HLG’s, before the short lived SAL’s, and the current DLG’s. Sad to see IHLGF gone. Hoping it gets revived some day as IDLGF.

Thank for posting Paul, a friend bought this DVD on your site, I lost count of how many times I watched this documentary. I learned a lot by observing the pilots and gliders. Cheers.

Why not bring in an Olympic Javelin thrower to launch one of your gliders, or would that rip the wings off?
