International arbitration explained to my grandma

My grandmother experienced almost everything from the past century:
both World Wars, the five continents, economic crises and booms, the
arrivals of cars and the internet.
As a very curious woman, my grandmother was always eager to understand international arbitration, believing that an arbitrator was a black whistleblower running around a football pitch.
So, this is how I used to tell her about this fascinating subject, which involves history, justice, trade, efficiency and so much more.

Thank you for the informative video. I made the mistake of signing a contract that said that if the employer and I had any disagreements then we would have to go through arbitration. We have a disagreement but he gives many excuses for not wanting to go through arbitration. I imagine that he doesn't want to go because it will cost him money and he might actually lose because, I think it's very obvious that he needs to pay me for the work that I did. How can I force him to go through arbitration?

wow this is very innacurate. Arbitration is not fair tribunals but private entities with no transparency, no possibility to appeal, no ethical requirements for arbitrators (=judges) who are even allowed to be in conflict of interest (and often are), and stats showed they favor corporations in 2/3 of cases. It's a system allowing corps to press charge against countries because they democratically voted laws for public interest but bad for the corp's profits (ex: laws for ecology, people's health, food safety, animal welfare). Ex: Cigaret corps attacked Australia for doing public health laws for smoking prevention (plain packaging to not attract kids)!! And this video labels it a "secure neutral system".

i don't like investement arbitration too. But i think that between merchants arbitration is an effective method of dispute resolution. Bringing a plea before a foreign state court can be a little bit dangerous in some jurisdictions, since, for example, the judge may take into consideration the nationality of the party, when he or she issue an decision, due to political reasons. Don't forget that arbitration contributes to the decongestion of the courts.
