.I do not understand what is the difference between the two? The gears are inside both the bodies(external and internal), so why are we calling them internal and external gear pumps?

I believe the external and internal terms are referring to the direction the teeth of the gear point. Not to be confused with the actual location of the gear within the pump. In this case the teeth of the outer gear ( internal gear) point inwards there for it makes it an internal gear. For an external gear pump both gears have teeth facing outwards that mesh with one another.
