Thank you for the information. It's quite interesting.
Your channel is the Best !!!
great content. well done!
Hello, I was wondering when the student version might be launching. i noticed on your website that it said Nov 2020. Has it already launched ? Eager to get down to reading it
I got €500 a month for my full time internship (which is a lot for the netherlands). That is less than the absolute minimum loan of a 14 yo working in a super market. It is stupid. It is dumb. It is not right. But companies will tell you that “you should be glad to get the oppertunity” or to feel lucky or whatever. It is the cheapest, scummiest thing.

Yep. Dutch companies take advantage of internships not required to meet minimum wage requirements. It strikes me a senseless penny pinching. One of the best engineers I’ve hired at Uber came through an internship. Turns out he applied after he was accepted to another company’s internship who wanted to pay €500/month. This person didn’t live in Amsterdam and the money was not enough for rent for the months during the internship. So he applied to other places. It’s the loss for the other company. It’s silly to use software engineer interns as the source of close-to-free labour.

@@mrgergelyorosz Yeah, and it feels like there is nothing we can do about it either. We HAVE to go on internship (two during my study), and the competition (besides companies like Uber an dsuch) is even less. Also, if you don't make it, there'll be 10 others to take that position, so it's not like they must hire you else they don't have anyone...
mooie video!
I'm not sure that house allowance is tax free. Could you share more details.
From personal experience Amazon does not pay nearly as well as your were mentioning (at least in Germany). More like half of the salary which is in line with Microsoft, Siemens, BMW and pretty much any big German company. To intern at Amazon I actually took a tiny pay cut compared to a small local company I joined during high school. So I do think the big companies know exactly who they want to attract and will also pay lower if they can get great talent at that price. Maybe Amsterdam has a lot less CS students compared to Munich? Facebook on the other hand pays pretty much what you were mentioning.
You're really pumping out those books.

Writing a book (or two) was my reason to leave Uber and not start something new just yet. I have one last book left - at least as far as I’m planning: www.engguidebook.com
Also, one of the easiest ways to get into big tech is by doing an internship. The interviews don't concentrate on knowledge/experience that is required for senior roles and chances are - as a university student - you are pretty much "in shape" for coding interviews, because you have just recently finished those subjects about algorithms and data structures, so it's all fresh in your head! Then all you need to do is nail the intership by "just" doing great work and off you go for an offer that no other company can give you. I wish I knew this when I was a student :)

i am doing a course to start coding, and after getting a job in my country I plan to start a college in software engineer. my hope is that with my experience+ the college I could get a good job in Netherlands.
kind of frustrating as someone received internship offer from company in Amsterdam. They are offering me way less in full time than what is currently in part time in Germany.
Hmm there are also special cases, I got offered 1000 EUR + travel / mo at Prodrive Technologies (only because I did already do an internship there @ 500 EUR / month)
As a fellow content creator and software Engineer based in europe, I approve this video hehe! Jokes aside though, i find it very interesting that these are the averages in the Netherlands. I am based on Vienna and I would say salaries might be around the same depenfding on the level
Incoming CS freshman at UvA here😅. I was looking around for internships but couldn’t find any. Are the uber ones summer internships? Thanks & Greetings from Amsterdam👋🏽

Uber gives a 6-month internship (no more, no less) last time I checked. Not to bring your hopes down, but generally, Dutch universities tend to be very inflexible (less than 2 months of summer holidays), which means that if you take one, you will have to delay your studies.
Still waiting for the seniors and leaders salaries
Hey thanks a lot for this video. Do you know how many interns are taken per-intake for Uber? E.g Summer 2022 Amsterdam.. Maybe just a rough number for it? It seems like it’s extremely competitive though, isnt?
How much does it cost to buy talking software?
Are you also interested in data science / ML engineering salaries?

Let's for a second pretend, that Russia is a part of Europe, and I'm gonna flex on all of you with the lowest number you've seen. I worked part-time for 223 EU/month, then got a raise up to 340 EU/month, this continued for 8 to 9 months, and this the worst employment of my life, would never go there again, horrible company, horrible people, though I got a log of motivation to study for better opportunities, them - I now have obtained :)

Ouch, that is low!! Lower than what I made when I worked in Hungary, 10+ years ago. Experiences like this do give perspective, for sure. Seems like you gained that as well!
Great videos, there needs to be more transparency in EU. Although it made me cry, was supposed to have interview for Uber internship that got cancelled due pandemic, and ended up doing internship with local Dutch company.

Sorry to hear, Adam. Yes, I remember both internships cancelled, and some offers rescinded, and then layoffs happened, all while Uber’s main business (Rides) was shrinking day after day. It was terrible for everyone involved. Glad you could find another internship!

Thank you for making this video. Do you have any information about the Swedish job market for intern's? I am trying to make my way to sweden. But Netherlands is fine also.

Im from sweden and while i dont know alot about internships i would think they are about the same or slightly lower than the averages mentioned in this video. Entry level jobs here usually have a salary of around 3k euro/month or slightly above, so i think finding an internship that pays 4k/month will be very difficult to find if not impossible. At least I have never heard of anyone making anywhere near that as an intern.
For my thesis I spent 8 months in an internship for 475/month

Most students write their thesis at their university/home for free, consider yourself lucky
This might not apply to software engineering since I am a finance/ business analytics student. Current position: Working student 20h/week at a Dutch company in Germany: 900 Netto after Pension. Soon: Internship Deloitte full time: 1000 Brutto. Not sure how much it will be Netto. Any other experiences in this field?
Wow. So some interns made more than me, than I did when I moved to Germany with 54K with 6 years experience and upto 2 years after that. I guess I was on "visa minimum wage". Talk about shattered dreams. Either way, I guess it is my fault that I am in this situation.

There's a distribution of jobs that pay very well, those that pay average, and those that pay less than average. Uber and Amazon probably hires 5-10 interns/year combined in the Netherlands, and is the top of what interns can make - likely across Europe. At Uber, we had more than 500 qualified intern applicants for 4 positions: so getting these positions is incredibly competitive. In the next video that I'll do I'll try to visualize the distribution of salaries and the fact that companies pay different, based on who they compete with. Here's an article I wrote that explains this better: blog.pragmaticengineer.com/software-engineering-salaries-in-the-netherlands-and-europe/
Dear Sir, I hope you will answer my question.... Is it difficult to open a software and artificial intelligence company in the Netherlands?? Is it expensive?? And how many years does it take a software engineer to do this??
When will you share results for senior engineers?

Soon! I did not just want to dump data, but validate it and give some interpretation for it. I've got cleaned data and I'm writing up the script and expect this to be out next week for the Netherlands ranges (that is the most detailed report and a market I'm very familiar with). EU one to follow then. I want to have the data ready as well for people to browse.

Badly paid internships have been -ev ever since we moved out of the industrial age. I'm shocked European companies are still employing this obsolete practice.
