    What is particularly noble about Dr. Fung is that this information is put on KZread for anyone to find and use and benefit from. Its not behind a paywall, its not a commercial for buy my product, its just out there for anyone to use and get healthy. If only I had this information 10 years ago. I only recently discovered Dr. Fung in June of '22, but have lost over 70 pounds since then. Having watched almost all of the videos by now, I can't help but grin a tiny bit when Dr. Fung sounds a little exasperated at trying to say nicely for the 1 millionth time, "your eating to darn much!". I guess this is pretty much what ever doctor goes through with their patients. 😀

    @Kent You asked how I lost the weight, I fasted and walked an hour or so everyday. I eat my last meal Sunday night, and then fast until Friday morning. I stay hydrated with water or tea, and take salt + an electrolyte supplement everyday. I tried various combinations of alternate daily fasts, but I was hungry all the time. Sunday to Friday just turned out to be the easiest, least complicated way to do the fast. In the beginning I was losing about 5ish lbs a week, but after about 6 months I'm only losing 2ish lbs a week. Though I have no way to measure, I don't feel like I've lost much if any muscle. The first week wasn't much fun adjusting to fasting, but 6 months later, its easy peasy.

    @@noreasonsu3883 Honestly, its easy peasy. From a physical point of view, I'm not hungry, I have tons of energy and truly, Monday through Thursday I feel great. Physically I feel like I could go a week or more without food. Its the mental challenge is what's so difficult to overcome. By Thursday night my brain just won't let up thinking about food. And trying to get any sleep Thursday night is just a exercise in futility, I toss and turn all night. I'm guessing its because of the counter regulatory hormones. Once I start eating again on Friday I feel awful. Its like how you feel after eating that huge thanksgiving meal, except I feel that way all day Friday. But at least I sleep great Friday night. Sat and Sun I do ok, I just feel normal again, then Monday and Tuesday I don't even want to look at food. 😎

    0:29: 💪 Weight loss is a crucial aspect of public health, especially for metabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes. 5:53: 📊 The probability of achieving a normal weight using the standard eat less move more strategy is very low. 11:32: ! Calorie restriction leads to a decrease in metabolic rate, limiting body fat loss. 16:38: 🍽 As energy drops and metabolic rate decreases, hunger levels increase due to higher levels of ghrelin hormone. 22:08: 🔥 Fasting increases noradrenaline levels and switches the body's fuel source from food to stored body fat, leading to increased energy expenditure. 27:22: 🍽 Skipping dinner allows your body to use stored fat for energy and reduces hunger levels. 32:24: 🔑 Controlling hunger is more important than controlling diet for weight management. 38:01: 💡 Fasting is a natural and beneficial part of our physiology that can be done by both males and females without any harm. 43:22: 🍽 Fasting is more important now than ever due to the prevalence of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic disease. 48:51: 🕒 The physical hunger during fasting tends to decrease, but the psychological hunger from constant temptation is the real challenge. 53:54: 🍽 Stimulating your appetite with sweet foods can lead to overeating and weight gain. 58:56: ! The food industry introduced snacking after World War II to increase profits. 1:04:36: 📚 Fasting can help manage and even reverse type 2 diabetes by allowing the body to burn glucose and deplete its stores, leading to weight loss and improved health. So great to spend a Sunday afternoon settling in and watching a Dr. Fung lecture! (Better than the Packers today 🤪😅!). I remember when I started watching almost two years ago I was wondering if all this was really true and worked but felt it was worth a try. Now, I watch and think "Yes! That's so true! That's exactly what happens and how it works!". I'm 59 and I've lost over 150 lbs. and have been maintaining it well since then. The transformation has been profound. I did it all on my own, just by following and reading Dr Fung's books. I'm off my blood pressure meds, my osteoarthritis pain is so much better and my asthma is gone. I'm so thankful. Learning to fast changed my life. Thanks again for all you do 😊🙏

    Wow...I'm 51 and the "eat less, move more" idea has ruled my life for 30 years. I just sucked up the fact that I was hungry all the time and it "worked," until I regained and did it again, just as you said. I found out about intermittent fasting 3 weeks ago and have done OMAD 75% and 18:6 the other 25% of that time, and I've lost 6 lbs! And I'm totally satisfied, hardly any hunger and my one meal is literally all I can eat at once. I feel great and see that my goal is not only in view but I'll never regain, again!!!! I might have to increase to two meals a day; I can't keep losing 2 lbs a week for much longer...what a problem, LOL! Thank you for laying it out so clearly!

    Sounds almost like you do not like it. "I feel better when I eat? Just go through 2 days of pain while I work". You may want to look into your diet when feeding. On average you energy levels should be increasing. Sounds like diet is poor or you eat in excess during your feeds. Should be able to find info on that.

    Perfect example of a way to breakdown a complex subject but make it sound obvious and simple. I have tried every diet under the sun in the past 10 years and IF is the only thing that just works and is easy. Now thanks to amazing lectures like this I understand the science properly and can openly discuss with evidence with anyone. The only terribly sad thing is that you can't really commercialise fasting like you can juice fasting or gyms etc etc so there is so much vested interest in not publicising IF.

I agree 100% about hunger pains (waves) passing during short and extended fasting but you are the first to explain why very simply. To paraphrase your explanation, when not fasting, you get hungry, you eat, the hunger goes away. When fasting, you get hungry on and off during your fast and your body starts eating your stored fat and the hunger goes away. Two questions 1. Will fasting help fight Diabetes Type 1? 1. Will a 72 hour or longer fast, resetting your immune system, help fight the HIV/AIDS virus? Thank you for all your videos

    You are one of my heroes, Dr Jason! I have been trying to help someone( in her 50’s) who wants to lose weight and is trying to use the Dr Adkins book. She is TYPE 1 DIABETIC. she gets scared if she tries to skip breakfast, and I never hear you talk about type 1 diabetics and fasting. She is overweight but not obese.

    Thank you Dr Fung! Your guidance is priceless! ADF sounds really doable. As an older woman with celiac like inability to tolerate wheat and gluten and a family history of diabetes, obesity and heart disease I lost 34 pounds in three months doing IF and limiting carbs. That was more than a year ago and even though i’ve relaxed my restrictions the weight is staying off. My only issue has been some IB which I treat with a quality probiotic and at times a half dose of lomotil. I don’t hear of others having this problem so it must be specific to me. I would suggest that anyone fasting should pay attention to getting adequate fluids and electrolytes. This helped me tremendously and I was never ever hungry. 😊

Don’t really exercise a lot but do like to walk for kilometres and swim, suck at swimming as I sink easy 😢😂. 70 years old now and went animal based when my mother died when I was 64 and it was type-2 that ate her up. Horrible way to go ay 😢😢😢. Dr Fung was the first guy I listened to talk about this and had my eyes opened wide and my brain 🧠 came alive. Didn’t make any friends as many family members are in the medical field (FTA). Carnivore and fasting saved my life or at least extended it a lot! Feeling more and more like I can live to 120 these which some data says we should be able to live to.

    @@ouidabordji6438 Absolutely not! If you're adapted to burning fat instead of glucose for fuel, your body happily does so. If you eat all the carbs, then you never adapt to be a fat burner, your body stays a glucose burner, constantly burning those carbs demanding more and more, and your metabolism slows because on your "eat less, move more" way of eating your body fears famine and starvation. I've yo yo dieted from age 15 to 61 and that way never works (for me at least no more than 6-9 months) . Cutting carbs way down (for me almost always under 20 whole carbohydrates a day) and intermittent fasting are the only things that work. My intermittent fasting is 1-2 meals a day with at least 16 hours between supper of the eaving to lunch the next day. No long term fasting for me as I'm on blood thinners permanently and 24 hours is my limit without food or it seriously messes with my dosages. If I can do this after 55 years of fighting fat ( most years morbid obesity) anybody can!!!

    I did intermittent fasting 36/12 from the beginning of July of 2022 - the beginning of October 2022. I lost about 35 lbs. On the days I ate, I ate whatever I wanted. Some days I ate one meal, other days I ate throughout the day. I did discover that I actually wanted to eat healthier as time passed. I let vacation, and then a illness in the family derail me for a time. I am now getting back to my every other day fasting. I have fasted days here and there, but have found it difficult to get started again, but today is the day. I will not stop this for even vacation. If I do have some special event come up I do allow myself salad and or soup on a fast day.

    Back in the day, delaying a meal is torture on high carb diet! I would not be able concentrate, I would have a headache and feel terrible. If I restricted calories, I felt cold and terrible. Low carb diet made such a difference. Much easier to skip a meal and to not eat when not actually hungry. Dropped 30 lbs in 2011 and kept off, no suffering. Don't really miss those high carb foods as long as I don't eat the high carb foods and keep away from the fake sweeteners 95% of the time. Love all of your books Dr. Fung.

    @Jason Fung could you do a series on “what the gut knows”? had a breakthrough experience because of fasting, that I didn’t expect to happen. I only ever crave sugar and it is unceasing. While I was sick with the flu I suddenly had an intense craving for fresh cranberries, raw blueberries. I was actually salivating. I walked by the EmergenC and thought I would faint. So I brought the items home and feasted heavily on them alongside my dinner. The next day I had the most thorough cleanse and I am recovering, and no longer craving vitamin C foods. I don’t crave sugar, either! I feel the wisdom of my gut has returned, the real “Intuitive Eating.” I’d love to hear what you know on the subject

    Thank you for posting a nice summative refresher video. I started watching Dr. Fung about two years ago and I think I've watched every video and I've read almost all his books - you're an absolute life changer. I lost 50lbs and it has not come back even with going on holiday for a month (went to visit family after four and half years) and now fasting is just my normal eating patterns. Thank you Dr. Fung, you are literally a life saver for so many!! I would like to know how to share this with friends who often ask but when I tell them I fast they almost immediately get defensive and say "oh I could never do that" or "I have to have eat (generally carbs) or my blood sugar drops and then I'm weak" etc. I haven't figured out how to respond to this in a positive way so I just let it go. I've tried explaining the science behind it but it falls on deaf ears, my guess is because they just think that fasting is 'starving'. Any suggestions?

  • @AzaleaBee

    @AzaleaBee

    First, thank you for sharing your experience. 50 lbs of sustained body fat loss seems impossible for some people especially those who have already yo-yoed several times due to the outdated and harmful "eat less, move more" mantra of the past 5 decades. Family and friends might not respond to hearing about fasting until they see the sustained healthy results. Three things that seemed to have helped me in at least getting my family to stop worrying or intervening when I fast is to: 1) make sure that they see me eat well as I do eat well when I eat. 2) get as knowledgeable as possible so that I could articulate the science when asked and give reliable resources (Dr. Fung's books, various studies, Dr. Bikman, etc), 3) check and share my blood glucose and ketones whenever asked (I bought a keto mojo for this). My family learned pretty quickly that a blood sugar of 60 and even lower with high ketones was normal for me on an extended fast and by no means unhealthy. It has been a long time.. maybe even a full year since I have been asked to check my glucose. If there is a family member who you are particularly concerned about who needs to lose weight/ reverse diabetes 2 but sees fasting as "starving", encourage them to do TRE (time restricted eating). Have them read books and listen to lectures by Dr. Satchin Panda. SOOO helpful.

    A lot of people just want the easiest answer and if it doesn't sound easy they instantly shut off. What's crazy is that fasting actually _is_ the easiest answer, but in truth many people want to be told 'you can eat whatever you like whenever you like with no exercise and lose all the weight' lol. Or like "just drink this one tea each day with your regular meals and you'll lose weight". If someone is genuinely serious about wanting to lose weight and asks advice from someone who has lost weight, they _will_ look further into it even if they ultimately decide it's not for them. If they dismiss it instantly without even trying to learn about it, they're probably not serious!
