Johannes Brahms composed the Three Intermezzi, Op. 117, in 1892, describing them as "lullabies of my grief." He worked on them during the summer in Bad Ischl, sent them to Clara Schumann in October, and they are noted for their personal and subjective nature, conveying a pensive and dreamy atmosphere, particularly in the second intermezzo's middle section.
