This is a great mix, but I live in Georgia, we get a LOT of summer rain, so I use extra inorganic material. Coco coir with Cork chips (expensive but excellent), as well as horticultural charcoal. I also use perlite, pumice, chicken grit (crushed granite), and a sprinkling of osmocote or other time released fertilizer pellets. High nitrogen is not always the best thing for succulents, it promotes fast growth but if your plants are not receiving tons of sunlight, they can become etiolated (stretched). For space in deep pots, i use Styrofoam packing peanuts, orchid bark chips, and lava rock.

I am writing a comment using Google Translator. I do not know how to use it on a mobile phone, so I use it on a computer. It is a convenient world. Your videos are very helpful to me. I have been growing succulents on the veranda of an apartment in Korea for a little over a year. There are many things I don't know yet. Since the climate is different, the method of growing succulents is different, among them the method of making mixed soil.

Thank goodness you've translated it for me. It takes up so much time translating Korean to English. Thank you. Our weather has changed a lot since last year. We now have really high humidity, too much rain, windy and cold. Last year was dry, hot and low humidity. This is why I have different soil mix for different conditions. Where I plant them also makes a lot of difference.

Thanks for all your videos, I look forward to new ones every day now! I can't wait for all the soil mix videos - I've been doing 1/3 potting mix with 2/3 inorganic, but everything is growing so slow, and actually drying up maybe too fast. I plan on adding some fertilizer and worm castings to help.. I've heard that its best to dilute the NPK down from whats recommended, so I got 2-2-2.. but should I go for 10-10-10 (or something high like you suggest), or increase the dose of what I got?

Hi ADL, Have you watch my "Succulent MASTER SOIL MIX?" I find that this is a safer mix for "most" of my succulents. Haven't had any root rot on this mix yet. Just to avoid confusion....Intermediate soil mix(THIS VIDEO) I mainly use this soil mix for propagating rosette forming succulents such as echeveria, graptoveria, pachyphytum, etc.; or if I want them to grow big and fast in a big pot or even in the garden scenario. I use a different formulation (ADVANCE SOIL MIX) for succulents that I planted in a small pot. Who says succulents are easy to grow....LOL

I dont understand succulents. People say not to water until soil is completely dry, but my succulents are out in the open getting constant rain during the winter and its doing just fine. People say not to put in full sun but in summer its getting full sun in 90-100+ degree temp all day and its doing fine.

Which people? 😅🤣 There are so many different succulents that one can't generalize. Just like any other plants, trees, shrubs and vegetables....Succulents have varying needs. One has to know the name of the plant to understand how to grow and care them. Some succulents love water, some don't. Some love the sun and others will die if exposed to the sun. Thanks for watching. 🥰

Depends how you want it to grow or what kind of succulent it is. I always say if in doubt, use the master soil mix and make sure you have some top dressing so there's no contact between the soil and the plant. Got a video coming up on repotting cuttings that might be of use to you.

Hi Liz, since we don’t get rain here like you do, would it be wise to plant my succulents using your intermediate soil mix formula? I’m using terra cotta pots and the majority of time the succulents are in my greenhouse. I figured I will water them deeply once a week. I’m fixing to get them out of the greenhouse come summer when we get temperatures upwards in the 90’s. Thank you for creating your videos. I learn from them.

Using my Master soil mix, the longest time my succulents have experienced with no watering is 5 months. As a rule, I only water when they need it; highly dependent on the size of the pot. To get my succulents used to the summer heat, I prefer to let them out slowly in autumn through spring.

Most of my succulents are directly in the ground and I noticed some have rotted.. but my soil is STILL damp.... days after it last rained... Do you think I should add some sand? I looked for Granite but haven't been successful. I also have some bugs that particularly like my biggest succulent.. (i only have 1 big one so far) lol.. Unfortunately I don't remember names like you do. I plan on trying to mimic your Intermediate mix... I like experimenting... it's fun!!

Google pictures is an awesome way to get your plants identified. Just take a picture of the plant and you should see a square box if you look at the picture in your album. That's Google picture search. it may not match up immediately exactly but it will bring you closer and closer to where you will finally be able to identify your plant. Also try downloading a plant identifier app. ☺️

Dear Hi Liz. Thank you for the video and your explanations. I have a question, how can you know who is in a coma in the winter and who is in a coma in the summer. Do you have any photos of schoolchildren who can help me know their growing season? Your mix looks great for students but I do not think we have in Israel what you use. Thank you for learning and the magical experience of the beautiful scholars in your garden.

I can’t believe I washed my granite 🤦🏼‍♀️😭Please can you make some some suggestions as to where I can track down decomposed granite in a similar consistency to yours. The bagged stuff from CSG is too fine, it’s pretty much 80% sand consistently. Even if I dried it out most of it is too fine. I’m lost as to where to turn. I feel your mix is the best of the best and Im not willing compromise the ingredients you use because I’ve seen first hand how amazing and healthy your succulents are.

Growing Succulents with LizK I know from our conversations that the place you dig your granite from is special to use so I’ll never want you to feel pressured to share the location, especially as it’s a friend’s property. But if you can help me figure out an alternative I’ll be forever grateful. I’ve got another bag of unopened cream decomposed granite from CS&G. I can drop it off so you don’t have to travel out there, if you like.

I remove Peat moss from newly purchased succulents that have them and use it for some indoor plants. Coco peat is also another name for coconut coir. It's a natural fibre extracted from the outer husk of coconut. It's entirely up to you which you'd prefer.

  • @GrowingSucculentswithLizK

    @GrowingSucculentswithLizK

It should be evident with the weather we've been having lately. I only have a couple of rotting leaves. The trick with this soil is to water less in summer or dry season and if they have too much water in the soil, it will boil and kill the plant. Water them when temperature is low and no water when hot.

Succulents don't need much fertilizer. Just know that the more Nitrogen they have, the faster they grow but less colorful. So, any fertilizer will do. I use a 10|4|10 so I have to add more of the 4 to balance it.

Pwede as long as after the initial watering, keep it out of the rain (still lots of light and air flow) and only put baby plants so they can grow and adapt to the weather and don't water; if you feel the pot is still heavy even though the top soil is dry. This will encourage the baby plants to grow deep roots and search where the water is. Good luck.
