Interlocking vs. Retwisting Locs (PROS & CONS) | My Entire Experience

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Today let's talk interlocking vs. retwisting Locs, the pros AND the cons from my entire experience! Please feel free to add any of your thoughts about each method down below!
Just a back story:
RETWISTING:
I have been growing my locs now for three years and I generally maintain my locs through retwisting. I have retwisted since the beginning of my locs journey simply because it's something really easy for me to do from home (all by myself). Retwisting is a beginner-friendly way to maintain your roots - especially for those of us who are not "professional hairstylists" lol.
For so long I have retwisted my own locs myself with a few clips and a twisting product (lately I have ditched the tools and products except oil). The reason for this is because I have found comfort in twisting the roots of my dreadlocks and I have been a little fearful with interlocking my own hair.
INTERLOCKING
A few weeks ago, my mom Velvet Lox interlocked my locs (for the very first time!) in order to tighten my locs instead of retwisting.
INTERLOCKING PROS
1. Interlocking locs last longer
2. Great for active lifestyles
3. Hair stays neat
INTERLOCKING CONS
1. Takes a long time to do
2. Makes it difficult to comb out locs if you plan to in the future
3. Very intense! You must know what you are doing or you may damage your locs.
4. Expensive to get installed by a professional (I googled some prices and the interlocking method can go anywhere from $300 to $600 - some locticians charge per length of hair)
Overall my experience with both was very pleasant!
The interlocking installation was completely pain-free and did not feel tight at the base at all. It did take 2 hours tho lol But with the right company and much patience, you should be fine.
The retwisting installation process is super easy to DIY from home and really gives me a more organic feel to maintaining my hair.
Which technique is YOUR personal fav?

I started off interlocking and will always interlock. Even with my first set of locs, which were on the traditional side, I interlocked because it was easier for me and I liked the fact that it last longer than retwisting or palm rolling. I wish my hair would hold a retwist! But either way I'm perfectly happy with the way my interlocks look.

Latrina Lenae I interlock too and my locs are thick. Retwisting doesn’t stay for me either, they just come undone. I like interlocking because nothing comes undone, you can actually see new growth not just your retwist coming apart. Plus I don’t have to use any products to interlock it. Only con for me really is sometimes interlocking and it not laying down the way you want it but that all depends on which direction you start interlocking on and end on.

I started my microlocks myself, having 3c hair (high density with shaved sides) interlocking was the best especially since I workout 4-5 days a wk & retie every 4-5 weeks. I use the same tool as momz i do a 4 point rotation & have been loc-ed for 8 months. It takes me 2 days to interlock my 410 locks.

Honestly , I started interlocking my hair .. haven’t turned back since . I can stretch it out longer on maintenance .. when I retwisted my hair .. I had to always freshen it up . I hated that . I can stretch my interlocks out months .. vs retwist for a few weeks .

My first attempt with locking my hair I started them with the comb coils and I made the mistake of washing them after about a month, several came out and I took them ALL DOWN!!! I’m 2 months into my second attempt and I decided to interlock them as discipline measure and I am much more satisfied with having them. I will take i to consideration tho about making them too tight at the root which is what I have just done last night , but I have not touched them since April until now

Interlocking is not more difficult. All you have highlighted as cons boil down to technique. All you need to do is look for a loctitian who actually knows what they're doing. All re-twisting does is that it ensures that your fingers are constantly in your locs (adjusting, re-tightening), and that will cause thinning eventually. Interlocking on the other hand lasts so much longer and it's neater, you don't have to fiddle with it because that one loc has unravelled, and you can go months without needing to touch up. Lastly, you know exactly where your new growth starts from with interlocking. I have mature locs, I don't need to interlock frequently, so 2-3 times max is good enough for me per annum. I pitch my tent with interlocking.

And that is the major problem I have with retwists. I like the cylindrical shape and the overall look, but it's only as good as it looks until fluid (water, sweat) touches it. No matter how tightly you re-twist (which isn't advisable), it comes apart when it's wet. I wash my hair every fortnight, and nothing can make me change that pattern (I perspire a lot!). Interlocking to the rescue. I started out with comb coils and subsequently retwists, but it would fall apart within days and eventually my hair started growing out of the loc, making the roots thinner (in some cases some locs were hanging by a thin strand). Eventually I tried interlocking and all the problems stopped and I could wash my locs as frequently as I needed to. I've never looked back since then.

I initially started my Locs with extensions because I started my journey with a mohawk fade. I tried twisting it before and it never formed. Every new retwist was a new start so I cut all my hair off. This time I interlock with strand maintenance. I thought it was thinning later to see my natural is fine. Now I have stronger strands/roots.

What your mom did is called a 4 point rotation which is what I do as well. I also have never been to a salon or anything for my hair. I've heard of places putting relaxer into conditioners and leave in conditioners, I've heard people getting traction alopecia from extremrly tight braids at certain salons and so many more horror stories. At least when I fail during a D.I.Y I didnt pay myself to do so and I always know what steps lead up to that mistake thus I can correct for the next time. I also have done both interlock and twisting my roots but I had to transition to interlocking throughout my whole head. I have straight hair that naturally grows along with my textured hair, textured hair stays in the loc but the straight hair is disrespectful. It just sticks out and makes my locs look fuzzy and super messy, which I cannot stand. I like neatness. For anyone thinking about starting locs PLEASE try installing starter test locs with different methods to see how you hair reacts and what method is best for *you*. That's one mistake I made twice and am still correcting to transition to locs best for me.

I've been locd since 2015. Started with interlocking by professional like every 6 months. Self caring between interlocing with the stylist with myself retwisting and my hair was fine until the pandemic I started interlocking more myself and my hair is thining a little just want to add that I have turned 50 and under a lot of stress, thunk that may have added to the thinning. Now after some hair treatment and twisting instead of interlocking often my hair is getting back to normal. I will start interlocking again though like once a year. Will be twisting mostly. Interlocking I think is mostly for thick hair if your hair is thin or is thinning I don't recommend interlocking.

I wash my hair weekly and I think about interlocking often, but I don’t want to damage my locs. I have very small locs. I wonder if I used a 2 point rotation instead of 3 or 4 would that work better? My hair is coily, I have serious shrinkage, and grows outside of the loc. I have to wrap hair around my locs often..

keny chan interlocking can be very beneficial for small locs. You just have to be aware of the pros and cons. If done properly, interlocking won’t damage your locs. I started off the first few months of my journey interlocking before switching to retwisting and still interlock my smaller locs along my perimeter because they’ll completely unravel (thus interrupting the locking process). Interlocking does give different results as far as how your loc looks and feels. From a distance it’s not noticeable. But it may result in a slightly tighter or more compact loc. But the fact that you can wash your hair immediately or sweat without worrying about it unraveling may be worth it for you.

Alycia Tamara I practiced on a few locs and I’m going to give it a try when I shampoo my hair. Thanks for your advice! I have over 200 locs. Since I wash my hair often, I deal with my roots marrying a lot. The unraveling doesn’t bother me. The tool I have is a little too long, so I’m going to see if I can make it shorter, until I can order one online.

keny chan if you’re have locs that marry at the roots, make sure you pop all your locs after you wash your hair. Separate them then so they don’t marry later. Interlocking won’t help your locs not marry. I had that issue when I was interlocking too.

The technique used here for interlocking is a little strange. If you thread the loc through the tool first, then interlock by using the skinny end of the tool through the base of the loc, the loc stays threaded throughout all the rotations and you only have to thread once per loc. But no biggie. Love your locs. Thanx for the comparison.

I got interlocked once ,like 3 months into my journey, I didn't like it, it didn't lay naturally and 2 of my locs had holes that thankfully filled in. I also didn't like the y pattern. So I learned how to retwist my hair and never looked back. Interlocking takes a lot of patience in comparison to retwisting. I love that it is something I can maintain myself as a part of self care.

@Alexandria Hopkin Hey hun I’m a licensed cosmo, Be careful doing that. If you go in between interlock method and coil/twist method this can cause inconsistency through the loc and that’s when weak spots and popping usually occurs. I’m not to familiar with interlock method and I do not do it however I do know the after interlocking on your “new growth” it should last you longer than a retwist would last you anyway. Side note a retwist which should be spaced out 6-8 weeks should last you if styled about that long this allows the recoils to loc and set in. Everyone I’ve met who’ve started with the interlock method their loc usually shows inconsistency’s because they are basically making knots to create a loc, the person’s hair was still able to grow. However compared to the typically retwist client their locs do not look as consistent or strong and mature. They usually have more breakage and weak spots and are thinner throughout making it different then color and etc ... I hope this helped.

Thanks . Yes I do agree flipping from one method to the other frequently can cause inconsistency in the locs. I only interlocked once and have been getting retwists since. I can definitely tell where the interlock was because it is a knot but my hair is still growing looks nice. I will continue to retwist because I enjoy the look better. My loctician says it’s okay and will grow out eventually. I just thought my locs were ruined because I had to interlock that one month. 6 months loc’d now and loving it.

I retwist my locs. I’ve been seriously considering moving to micro locs after watching your previous video. Going from 128 locs and moving to 600 is what I’m considering. My question is with micro locs do you have to interlock or can you do retwists. I know you do a lot of research and since I maintain my own hair I didn’t know if their was pro’s or con’s or retwisting or interlocking micro locs. Thanks.

  • @lisettebrown8317

    @lisettebrown8317

Retwisting microlocs isn't often done because the locks are so small and the retwisting can cause damage. I have seen like one or 2 people who did retwisting over interlocking. Seems to me like a retwist won't last long and to retwist 600 locks and they all not last long seems futile.

  • @alyciatamara7234

If you’re talking about hundreds of locs.. they’ll be tiny. You won’t have the option to retwist. Microlocs do come in a variety of sizes. Some people consider my locs microlocs. I have about 165-170 so mine are large enough to retwist or interlock. But if you’re doing even smaller, you’ll have to interlock.
