Interesting Metal Detecting Finds at Old Logging Camp
Ғылым және технология
My friend Matt and I went back to my father in law's camp to metal detect the old logging camp. We found some really interesting stuff this time that indicates that it was most likely a logging camp.

Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

Pretty interesting guys. 😉
That was a fun change. Those shovels look like they were repurposed into targets. Nice fancy on the possible stove piece and the buckle. That big rock looked like it could have came from the Granite State😂
@MichiganRocks

One of the shovels was definitely used for target practice. The big hole must have been hit multiple times. There was also a smaller hole that had the distinctive shape of a bullet hole.
How cool, Rob! I love your friend's slick little shovel and that hand held metal detector.

I'm not sure how well this fits on a rock channel. I have been trying to add a few new things lately, but they haven't gotten many views. I don't want to scare people away. I hope to make a video looking for copper sometime this summer, so that will be a good mix of both metal detecting and rock hunting.
Two axe heads and both different, so awesome ! I really liked the suspender clip, ornate piece of the old stove and the old shovels !! Looking forward to the third episode, if yous go back out !

There are no plans to go back to this spot. The only thing I really have planned is to bring the detector up to the Keweenaw Peninsula to look for copper.
Pretty cool! I’ve always wanted a metal detector. Back home, there are a lot of places to find Civil War relics and just old stuff from farms and pioneers. Thanks for sharing.

I haven't done much metal detecting. It's hard to know where to go to find interesting things.
Speaking of deer camp... I watched a doe bring her newborn into my backyard this morning. She bleated and pushed it down to the grass and left. About an hour later she brought the second one out and pushed it down, then left. They are both still there but I haven't seen the mother all afternoon. I posted a picture on my fB page. Nice finds. I don't own an axe and I've been looking at axeheads on e-bay.

That must have been fun to watch mama deer with her fawns like that. I have found fawns in the tag alder swamp behind my house, laying on a a dry mound of land surrounded by water. They sure are hard to see back there. I have never seen a doe push one to the ground though.
You look so proud of your saw. Pretty cool actually 😁

You dug a massive 2-ft plug and someone said the target probably isn't a coin. Hilarious. That saw fit perfectly within that plug so you got the last laugh! Finding both halves of the ax was fun! That bucket may be a maple syrup bucket. You may want to give it a closer inspection.

My grandfather was a lumberjack. He first saw my grandma while he was floating logs down the White River. He spent a lot of his time working by Roscommon. Your friend Matt uses the same metal detector that I do, the Whites MX Sport. That looked like a fun day, digging up a little bit of history. I was interested in the earth under the top soil. Was that sand or something else?
@MichiganRocks
3 жыл бұрын
Matt's detector seems to be really good. I like that it can be switched over to more of a pin pointer. He showed me some of the settings on it, and I was surprised at how many options it has. The soil is sand under the topsoil.
Square shovel looks like a coal shovel. I'm guessing it wasn't for coal in a logging camp!

Not that we could see. We did look.
Did the whole bucket you found have a hole in it? That part you guys found at the 2:20 mark looks like the strap that holds the hook of a cant hook to the handle. No idea if I'm close, but that's what it looks like to me and I have a cant hook, lol. You looked like you were having fun!
@MichiganRocks
3 жыл бұрын
After Googling a few pictures of old cant hooks, I see what you mean. Definitely a good guess.
Always nice finding things that are hidden from sight. Found a six pack of beer on a beach with a detector once. I don't like beer so I put it back. It seemed like it had been placed there recently for safe keeping. Without a doubt you found a logger,s camp. How much time were you out searching? Sometimes it takes a whole day to find one good thing. The old saw blade was the best. Looks fine the way it is. Please don't tumble it!
@MichiganRocks
3 жыл бұрын
We were there for two or three hours. I thought we did really well for the time we spent. I don't think the saw blade will quite fit in my tumbler. I might need to upgrade.
I think the object @2:16 ish is a part of a Cant Hook or Peavey, it looks like the part that goes around the handle that holds the hook, look at some pics on line to see what you think. And I don't mean to be that guy but the way I have seen axes made is the opposite of what Matt said, the back or poll is one piece and the axe is folded toward the blade end and a piece of high carbon steel is forge welded in between, if the axe is clean you can see the line were the two types of steel meet. And the section of saw blade you found is for hardwoods, 2 teeth and a raker for hard, 4 teeth and a raker for soft, very cool finds all around.
@MichiganRocks
3 жыл бұрын
Someone else also thought that thing was part of a cant hook. I looked up pictures and agree that's a good possibility. Please don't ever feel bad about correcting me (or Matt) if we say something that is not correct. How else would we learn? I don't know anything about how axes are made. That's interesting that different saws were used for different types of wood.
Although if it was a logging camp, unless ladies of the evening visited, I am probably wrong.
That saw piece was awesome. If you're creative or know someone who is have them paint a cool picture on there or just clean it up and display it. HH Matt

Interesting finds guys. Was that a C.C.C. camp?

I have no idea. My father in law only suspected that it was an old lumbering camp. The only clue before metal detecting was a raised rectangular outline of an old building. They had dug up a few old items in the past, but there is no record of a building here as far as he knows.

I'm concerned about my channel becoming too much of the same thing. So far, mixing in other types of content hasn't been working too well though.
