Shin Godzilla is by far a one of my favorite Godzilla films. As a kid of course I would always rewatch his movies. As a adult, I have watch Shin probably over twenty times. Where others probably hate and say it is to slow, I enjoy the bureaucratic aspect of it. This was a terrifying Godzilla. They succeeded with this movie.

I find it amusing that Toho would even consider the idea of removing the nuclear aspect of Godzilla. To do that would be like removing Batman's parents being killed in a Batman film, it's a fundamental element of the character. Godzilla is the atomic bomb given flesh, he's meant to be a physical manifestation of the fact that we can never put that genie back into the lamp. The lack of that kind of neuters the character in my opinion. It's one of my issues with the Monsterverse movies to be honest.

This may seem off topic but I took note that those types of films tend to go along with some things a society is use to or what the audience may o it care enough to understand, some of the greatest films of iconic characters tend to dive in deep into what they’re about and even challenge society in itself with the idea that one can be just as good as person as the hero themselves, most people may be considered through mostly technicalities, but just how children want to be as good as those heroes, teenagers, and adults should be to, it may be said many are superficial but people can change for the better, these types of concepts are present in all sorts of stories of heroes whether it deals with romance or good and evil or a combination of both, people can care for each other unbiased, stories about such characters heroes, anti-heroes, or villains if done well to represent a message, a truthful one, and/or concept of the character they can do well, some of these films are from the Godzilla series, Joker, older Spider-Man films, some Batman films, and so on, that’s also why I think the Shin Trilogy should be wider marketed, especially Shin Kamen Rider, i think they can serve a good “challenge” in the west if you get what I mean, lots of modern works like some of the popular anime that are watched don’t necessarily have much a meaning to them other than entertainment, it’s odd how “children’s” media can be much more darker and realistic with a glimpse of hope and messages of warnings regardless of all its fantastical elements. Society in these stories often the common thing tends to be an advocate for creation of certain bad things, some of these things may seem justified or normalizes, some of them may be wrong but let be to move on or go on with the world but they’ll continuously cause issues in real life, so these heroes take it upon themselves to fight these things regardless of how small or big. At times with superheroes and monsters some say if they existed they’d love them, but often it’s obvious it’s not truly for who they are, anyhow it’s the idea that the heir can fight for the chance for a better world of love and for that to become a reality. Sorry for the long paragraph but thank you if you read it all.

That's not a good analogy when godzilla has 2 meanings to his character, on one hand he's a representation of the dangers of nuclear power and the manifestation of nature itself. The monsterverse films still have his origins (mostly just encounters with modern humans) linked to nuclear weapons but monsterverse godzilla isn't meant to be the son of a nuke. He's equivalent to heisei godzilla where he's a force of nature. Comparing godzilla's nuclear origins to batman's parents being killed are 2 different essential parts of both characters. Batman needs some sort of trauma to even properly work as a character and even then Flashpoint batman isn't even Bruce. It's his father who became batman after seeing his son die. Godzilla is a character who's relevance only works depending on the environment he's in and the message of him being a representation of nuclear power only works in some situations. Not all. It's why shin gojira and gojira (and to a extent 84goji) work because all 3 godzillas were born when the topic of nuclear power was relevant. Outside of that, every other time godzilla was relevant, he was relevant because of environmental issues which happens more often than nuclear related incidents. Even Honda at one point acknowledged godzilla was no longer mankind's greatest fear and became his own entity.

I always view monsterverse Godzilla as a sorta combined, and more modern view on nuclear power. That it is incredibly dangerous and can be a threat to humanity and the planet. But if controlled and used properly/safely can be one of(if not the) most powerful energy sources we have.

Lmao Godzilla doesn't need the Nuclear aspect at all except as his origin, in Shin he's literally just a whatever motive to explain the shit state of Japanese politics, in the Monsterverse they're just fucking around, in most Godzilla movies he's either a general environmental message, a spit at politics and business or a living weapons development program, Godzilla being a direct link to nuclear weapons is only present in very specific films of the saga and even then there are other interpretations to them

As someone who’s family has been greatly impacted by nuclear disaster, shin godzilla hits home. When I was in 5th grade my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. In the months that followed, every other woman in my family - grandma and aunts, a total of 4 in all including my mother - developed the same type of breast cancer. The kicker was that all tested negative for the gene that corresponded for the type of cancer they had. They all had one thing in common; they were all present and living but a mile away when the 3 Mile Island disaster occurred. That plant even before the disaster would release steam and radiation every Sunday, and would order the local residents inside, as if that would do anything to protect them. To this day people who live around the plant die early, almost all people my mother and family knew from there have either had some form of cancer or have already died from it. The government denies that the plant was in direct correlation with the large quantities of diagnosis’s coming from there. But all the doctors that treated my mother agreed that 3 Mile Island caused her cancer; there was no other way she got the type she had without the necessary genes coded for it. Nuclear power destroyed my family and ripped away my childhood. It still continues to haunt me to this day what we’ve all had to endure. I will never be able to forgive or see the good in it, nor will I ever be able to forgive the government for what they’ve done.

I'm deeply sorry for what happened to your family. It is true that people allowing such tragedies to happen (government, businessmen, etc) must be held accountable for their actions (even though that won't undo the damage). However, and I do not want to seem hostile by any way, I think we need nuclear energy. Please, let me explain a bit. Current energy sources make more people die than nuclear incidents. I, for example, live in a country where we only have one nuclear plant (far away from my city), a few wind, solar and hydroelectric installations; but those are just too small and inefficient to satisfy the nation's need of energy. So, we still largely depend on burning oil, gas (or even coal in some places) to run our electric systems. And that, causes far more suffering. I've seen firsthand outer neighborhoods of my city engulfed by smoke when the weather does not cooperate to disperse such toxins. Fortunately, neither me nor my family live right there, but I have friends who have told me of their parents developing various pulmonar diseases because of such pollution. I believe we (as a global society) must abandon fossil fuels as soon as possible, we are already kinda late, and sadly, current "green" alternatives are not ready to fully replace fossil fuels. Nuclear is, for now, the only option we have to make a serious and quick transfer. Also, incidents involving nuclear facilities always have something to do with human error and plain irresponsibility; we have now many ways to make nuclear energy safe, and we only have to make sure the people working on it complies with the regulations. Finally, I want to express that I am against the manufacturing, storage, and of course, use of nuclear weapons. I've actually been to Nagasaki (and although the Japanese committed some serious war crimes, I think the use of two nuclear weapons over densely populate areas was unnecessary) and the things you can see there: the photographs of that day, being right above where they were taken, the ruins that still stand there, but specially the testimonies of the people (I even could meet one of the survivors, he was a small kid that day)... it all is just horrifying, the idea of it happening again somewhere in the world. But nuclear energy is other story. Just as Godzilla himself, it can be a destructive force that shows no mercy, or it could help us preserve this Earth, the only one we have. Thank you for reading and I really hope you are fine, and that your family gets some justice. My best wishes.

@@carlosadriantinajerovelazc4338 First, I’d like to thank you for being so civil when responding. I was super worried at first but when i continued reading that worry went away. I also just wanted to say that when I originally posted my comment, it was from a place of anger and grief spurred in the moment. I don’t truly hate nuclear energy, but I am greatly mistrustful of it due to my experience with it. As someone who lives in America, we aren’t often shared news from other countries; including how energy and resources look in other counties besides our own. When you talked of how people you know are hurt by the continued use of fossil fuels, that genuinely broke my heart. I’m so sorry for what has happened due to them, and it brings me some comfort to know that nuclear energy has helped someone. In short, thank you so much for telling me about your experiences. It’s really helped to expand my views on such a complicated subject as energy and resources. I would like to end on a bit more of an upbeat note however, in saying that eco friendly alternatives to fossil fuels and nuclear energy are finally being taken more seriously and being implemented more. From my understanding, the one issue that remains that prevents alternative sources from being implemented is big corporations themselves as well as the government. Through research I’ve found that many oil and gas companies lobby against the replacement of natural gas and hold it up and prevent it from being implemented, one of their ways of doing this being through the government by paying politicians and supporting their campaigns. Thankfully, people are fighting back against such things to try and make energy safer and more efficient while not just the USA, but the whole world. I hope one day that the wrongs done to both of us can be undone, and that one day we can live without fear of our own self made problems and creations.

@@aspen4786 I'm so glad that this reply thread has gone this way. Yes, I hope some day we can fully rely (globally speaking) on renewable and clean energy sources. As you mention, the main obstacle as of now, is greed; but I'm optimistic that it can be defeated by the people having knowledge and using their true power (although it will take some time, of course). Also, I read your other reply, I'm so happy to know that your mother was able to recover, although for sure it was a though experience.

I do wonder about there ever being a director's cut of the film to include some other concepts they had to end up cutting from the theatrical release. I distinctly remember one of the 'multiple bodies' concepts involving Shin Godzilla's cells developing into fleshy nodes of eyes and teeth that would grow over and around other material to assimilate the environment in addition to destroying it.

7:37 I was just watching Shin Godzilla for the billionth time with my partner, and was talking about how seeing the 3/11 footage side by side with shin Godzilla would be fascinating Im not Japanese and live in America, so I apologize if this appears insensitive, please feel free to let me know I feel like 3/11 was a monumental moment in internet history. So much footage was being shown online, and it was terrifying. I remember when my family and friends were like, "look on KZread, you can see people getting taken by the waves" to 8 year old me, it was just a glimpse of how big the internet would become in terms transmitting world events across the globe When I first watched shin godzilla, it took me back to that. It was crazy. And seeing the footage side by side, I honestly thought it was just like behind the scenes or unedited footage until I saw the timestamp! Truly an amazing film, especially compared to the bland American bullshit the monsterverse has become, and most hollywood films in general

My feelings on the film have fluctuated wildly. The things about it I don't like aren't Anno, they're wider attitudes in Japan, but in what sense can the two be separated? Should they be separated? Is it right to pass blame and what will the consequences be one way or the other? Then there's all the things about the film that go above me or anyone else and enter into the realm of fate and insanity. I don't see how anybody can have answers for that stuff, or if they do they have never been forthcoming.

I think Anno-san should take a crack at Go Ranger at some point, I mean he's done Ultraman and Kamen Rider, he should do the big three.

It's a version of the original Gojira theme from the 1954 film if I recall correctly. Whether or not its a new arrangement or the original, I'm not sure.

Great guess studioozkai 👍But it's also in the Shin Godzilla soundtrack, named Yashiori Strategy. However, the video's version of the song is pitched down.

Outstanding work. Yet, back in 2016-17, when I did research about that movie, I found a different kind of story. Tweets and forums were telling a story, that Anno was hired as an art-director. And later, he basically highjacked the director's position. Those stories were also about Anno being very demanding and taking a lot of hate from filming crew. Now, I am a little bit confused and don't know where is the truth, and where is Toho's PR stories.

I can't watch Shin Godzilla as its presented. His instant "Evolution's". They just remind me to much of Pokemon and Digimon. Something my brothers now think of after I made them watch it with the Digimon evolution music ready to play when those scenes come up. And they where in the target audience for those shows. There is also another reason, but that would require several walls of text to explain. Something I try to avoid any where that is not Reddit or a forum.
