This video is part of our series on phonetics and pronunciation for learners of English as a foreign language.
Phonetics is the academic study of speech production. You may find it useful if you are studying English as a foreign language who want to improve your pronunciation, which for many students is a challenging area. With phonetics we look at the individual sounds that are used to make up words. We can focus on how each sound is physically formed so you can identify the sounds you are having problems with and focus your study on the individual sounds to improve your pronunciation.

Your parents have enough money to make you study in a good school. You should be thank full not to be proud. you didn't make this on your own.

Hi @cocoolio. I am sorry you found the video annoying :( You do not need to wait for the pause. The video is interactive. You can click on the symbol and it will stop pausing andplay the sound. It uses the annotation feature on KZread which is not very 'time' accurate. Sometimes the pauses do seem a little long but I tried to set them up the best I could.

@cocoolio There are other interactive phonetic charts that are based on other software but I thought It would be an interesting and creative way to use the annotations feature in KZread as normally people just use it to flash up links to other videos but I see it's potential to revolutionize the video viewing experience and make it more interactive and not passive. Hopefully in time KZread will improve the system as more and more people start to use it creatively.

Just one correction, Letter M (0:56) is also made with the lips closed, meaning that you cannot stretch it, by trying to say it as "MUH". If you sounded it as /mə/ it becomes a combination of consonant m and vowel sound /ə/ where the ending "-ə" is incorrect.

I'll make an alternative to IPA, which can be written in cursive, more accurate, and doesn't look weird; meaning if it can be used for everyday use. Based on my research about Phoenician alphabet (its descents included) and Hangul comparison in shapes, no history relations at all but there's a possibility if the Phoenician alphabet invented by imitating the mouth anatomy and the Egyptian symbols are used either for reference, or idea, or to aid the learning, or to give them meaning, or combination of them. There will be so many diacritics based on mouth anatomy

The main problem with english is the fact that it is not phonetic at all... every letter should make just ONE sound than it would be really easy. BUT instead you have this combination of letters, and double letters and really inconsistent phonetic rules, not to mention words taken from french that just plainly ignore them...

Let’s say that I have a sequence of letters, are there rules that I can use to tell definitively weather or not it is a word that can be pronounced? For example: “asdrain” isn’t a word but it could be, “agdvapm” could never be a word. EDIT: I’m interested in doing this for an other language so I’m not looking for a series of rules that only apply to english but more for some good advice on what to search to find the info I need. Thanks on advance :)

Grammatically this sentence is incorrect... instead of it , you could say... You saved my life or you've saved my life!!!

The best sound ever because most of the people don't have the right sound of the Letters and words so people from other countries sound bad but I want the right pronunciation and get it as well as if can my best teacher has the right pronunciation since I was in high school so she teach me so good but I forgot some words and pronouncing and I want to practice because I lost a lot of good English so im going to practice again.

The /r/ is wrong. /r/ is an alveolar trill which does not exist in most English accents. The correct symbol for that sound is /ɹ/.

It makes me so happy to hear comments like this. To know that the videos we produce are helping people learn English is very rewarding. You will be glad to know that we are currently developing an updated HD version of this interactive chart as well as one with example words and a series explaining the different types of symbols and how to pronounce them. We will be focusing a lot more on our video production and building a learning community on KZread and other social media.
