Intensive ABA Therapy: How Much Therapy is Needed for Children with Autism?

Dr. Mary Barbera discusses how much therapy is needed for children with autism. More specifically, we’ll discuss applied behavior analysis (ABA), and what intensive therapy looks like.

In a recent Facebook Q&A I did, I had a member of my online courses ask about how many hours of therapy are required for children with autism. How much applied behavior analysis is recommended is a common question I get asked, especially since the number 40 hours a week is thrown around a lot. In my experience in the autism treatment space, I usually see children with autism get between 20-40 hours of therapy a week. This number is however, heavily dependent on how severe the diagnosis of autism is, and how dangerous the child is to him/herself or others.
An important takeaway from today’s video is that we really need to focus on everyone in the child’s life applying the #ABA principles that are being taught. Too many times, professionals don’t involve parents enough into the practice, and parents start digging holes. As I discuss further in the video, intensive behavior intervention can easily be undone if not everyone’s on the same page. Just because the child spent 3 hours with a professional, but then the parents are undoing all of that, doesn’t mean the child will get any better. So rather than focusing on how much ABA treatment is required for the child, we should be thinking about how parents and professionals can work together to put in place ABA principles that work every minute of the day to give the child the best chance he/she has to reach his/her fullest potential.

It’s really a surprise to me that you don’t have a lot more you tube subscribers. You have no idea how much I wished you were in my city to get Aba therapy from you for my child( not even sure if you are still doing the home one on one BCBA ) but that is my wish:) your videos and tips have been really helpful to me. In addition, I just ordered your book from amazon. Thank you for these videos.

Unfortunately insurance denied ABA coverage and I’m waiting on new openings to get a policy that covers ABA. I’m a subscriber to your online course and I have a quick questions for you. My son is in pre-K 3 from 7:30 - 3:00 pm. Do you think that I can utilize the rest of the time to do “ table work” or some occupational therapy and speech while I’m still waiting for the enrollment on Nov to get a new insurance ? Thank you Dr. Barbera

Hi mary, My son is 3.2 yrs and has been doing ABA for 8 months now. He has improved a great deal, however he has only pop out words here and there. He started OT too. I have enrolled him in speech therapy now, however i just wanted to know if speech therapy really helps, is it required or ABA will help in achieving speech successfully. I am a concerned mother and i do not want to regret wasting time knowing not to have done speech therapy or to have done speech therapy along with ABA and OT. Kindly suggest

My approaches are quite different than what a lot of traditional ABA programs are doing. Have you watched my free workshops?? Usually combining an ABA approach to speech and OT with children with autism is beneficial. bit.ly/2ELvSnM

Thank you so very much for your videos!! I would like to ask, what do you think about 3 days, 8 hrs ABA, then continuing with daycare 2 days a week...as I have notice some improvements with social interactions with other kids and teachers ( she is getting ST while at daycare 2x/month , and behavioral therapy 2x/month)...my child is 2yrs, 8months

if that works for your family, then that is great. Usually a child with delays needs some one to one support in the daycare to maximize their time there.

Hi 👋🏻 my son is mild autistic, he has a hard time controlling his emotions, when he is upset, he wants to hit mom and dad, throws his toys, I made a calming corner for him MAs now he hits the calming corner too. He repeats a lot frases from books and what his teacher says at school. Should I put him on Aba to help with his behavior? He is not agressive at school, but at home if doesn’t get what he wants he throws a big tantrum

Behavior principles can be tied into everyday life so that it is not like therapy. Just by organizing toys the right way you can set up more opportunities for learning. It is best if parents are using aba principles most of the child's waking hours. If you haven't check out my free workshop :bit.ly/2ELvSnM
