INTENSE FLASH FLOOD with debris plug intercepted by Dominator Drone in Escalante, Utah!

Ғылым және технология

Significant flash flood intercepted by drone down the Escalante River in Utah caused by over 2” of rain on an hour in the mountains above town. The intense flash flood entered through the Birch River. Large debris can be seen at peak flash flood. The active Monsoon 2021 continues. Meanwhile, a tornado outbreak happened in the Mid-Atlantic. Never stop chasing

Reed said that was from 3" of rain. I live in the Southeast and we have had 6" of rain at times without any MAJOR issues. This is fascinating to me and would love to have had a job like Reed's but would not have liked time away from family and staying in creepy inns.

Interesting flow dynamics. When the surge is traveling over a nearly dry stream bed the friction between the water and the bed gravels is enough to slow the flow so that the surface is traveling faster than the base, bringing the debris plug to the head of the flow, but when the surge front hits a deeper pool the basal velocity increases until the water flow starts to outpace the debris plug that is slowing down the surface of the flow, and the debris plug slightly disperses and follows the surge front..

That area of Utah is desert dear. I know Washington has large arid regions too, but it gets more snow and rain than most of Utah. They are getting hit with record high temps just like you. Except theirs are generally higher. This is a flash flood. Not long after the rain in the distant hills stops the only water in the wash will be standing water. No flowing water. Look at how the wash looked like ahead of the flash flood.

At 8:24, was it just a windy day or is the wind created by the force of the flash flood? I find UT/AZ flash floods fascinating! On the east coast, a flash flood is a much different (and more docile) creature. I learned on my trip out west, weather events have varying significance depending on what part of the country you're in. Definitely keep your eye on the weather north (upstream) of you when you're in desert/canyon areas!

Trippy.

Next one see if you can reverse the camera angle from flying reverse in front of the flow so we can see how it fills in to the banks as it passes various features of sand bars and dog legs . . I have experienced some insane storms at Escelante , been a minute since I've been in town

I agree. I wonder if it's trickier flying/filming backwards. would hate to back into a tree then drop into the flow.

I like to listen to the sound of the water and the rushing sound of the wind. Your Heartbeat/Pulse and music interferes with this. I have to turn the sound off to enjoy you video.

Poor choice of words in the title. The video did not show debris plugging anything and while the drone did record video of the flood, the drone did not intercept anything.
