Sebbene gli scenari in cui le macchine prendono il sopravvento sull’uomo siano lontani dalla realtà, è indubbio che l’Intelligenza Artificiale abbia un enorme impatto sulla società, da tenere sotto controllo e guidare verso usi benefici. L’enorme potenziale di queste nuove tecniche risiede nella capacità di costruire modelli per rispondere a domande che spesso non siamo in grado di affrontare per scala e complessità, come ad esempio i problemi legati allo sviluppo sostenibile che coinvolgono sistemi socio-tecnici e presentano importanti aspetti etici. E se l’intelligenza artificiale potesse aiutarci a prendere decisioni migliori? Se fosse lo strumento perfetto quando è necessario modellare il comportamento umano, le dinamiche sociali e gli aspetti ingegneristici delle infrastrutture coinvolte?

Artificial intelligence plays undeniably a big role in society even though the scenario in which machines will take over humans is far from reality. However it is necessary to control AI’s impacts within everyday life in order to benefit from them. The great potential of these new techniques lays in the capacity of creating models that give answers to questions often too big and complex for us, such as sustainable development linked with social and technical systems as well as important ethical issues. What if artificial intelligence could help us making better decisions? What if it could be the perfect means by which we would be able to control human behaviour, social processes and engineering aspects of the infrastructures?
