I really don’t like that they are dropping generation from the box. Generation is such an important number.

This looks like intentionally making it more difficult to see how far behind they’re getting.

Are they behind tho? Yes the intel chips can use way more power than the amd chips in something like cinebench or prime95 but in a real world work load like gaming the 13700k uses 140w vs the 7700x at 110w in Cyberpunk, which is one of the most cpu intensive games right now. That’s only a tiny 30w difference and when paired with a system that has a 300w+ gpu in it, it barely even registers

@@juanignacioaschura9437 depends where you live. Here in the US 30w more on an average play session of 3 hours, 3 or so times a week is less than $20 a year. At that point I’d buy whichever cpu is cheaper regardless of power draw

I think one of the main reasons for the change is simply to make more money. Now they can up the price of the Ultra series because there are so many different SKUs that most people will see the word Ultra and think they have to buy that. It's all about making more money in the end than it is about simplifying anything. Most of us have been around long enough to realize this.

No, you are plain wrong. You may not be fully in the rumours however I will make a sinthesis for you. On desktop Meteor Lake has been cancelled and there will be Raptor Lake refresh while on mobile the 14th gen will be partly Meteor Lake and partly Raptor Lake refresh (for the super high core count HX since Meteor Lake won't havw 8P+16E bur 6P+8E). Intel neended releaunch their Core brandinf after being blown by AMD and this is a good moment since Meteor Lake on mobile will compete well against Zen 4 mobile in battery life. Furthermore since many different products will be under 14th gen but only some will be based on Meteor Lake having those called Ultra will help alleviate confusion.

@@Archer_Legend Thank you. U r true. Intel got destroyed and is finally starting to rise back up. They really needed a engineering background ceo like nvidia and amd and they got it. They are slowly focusing more on R and D. And this branding will help if the products actually deliver. After meteor lake it will be simple. 'Intel core' being the product brand and segment. You only need to know that the high end is called ultra(ultra 5, ultra 7, ultra 9) and low end is non ultra(3).

At this stage in the game, Intel's new naming scheme seems to be more about taking the focus away that they are still falling behind with technology advances needed to compete with the likes of TMSC. Improving integrated graphics, adding dedicated AI support and chiplet design approach are all important steps forwards, but their solution to matching competitor's processor performance improvement still appears to be throw more power (Watts) at the problem. I wonder if the CISC architecture can ever compete with ARM / Apple RISC architecture with regards performance per watt.

I think this is the main reason for dropping the generation naming. It feels like this will add more confusion to the buying process. Unless they plan to follow AMD like they did prior and actually keep a BIOS chipset for more than a generation or two. Something stinks about this, I just can't find the source...could be lawyers, but being 2023 I bet it is to hide something and to make more money while providing actually less.

CISC cannot compete with RISC it terms of efficiency by nature, the instruction set is more Complex after all :) The only reason CISC is still around is that most applications are written for it............where have i heard that before 🤔

Power efficiency is king on portables so I really don’t see any reason to not go Mac these days with the only exceptions being gaming or of you must use windows exclusive apps. On desktop however performance is king. If intel can substantially outperform amd somehow even if it’s at the cost of guzzling power then they win. Simple as that

Have you seen a die shot of any recent CPU? Probably not. How much Ring bus / internal fabric / memory controller / L2 and L3 caches take space and power compared to rest of CPU core? Who bought the bulk of TSMC 3nm node capacity, isnt that Apple? Smallest node - highest performances at the same power.

Disappointed they didn't go for the "Super Duper Hyper Ultra Mega (And Beyond)™" branding

I think that 2 the E-cores inside the SOC tile are the most interesting ones, Meteor Lake should have amazing idle efficiency by turning off the core tile completely.

Sounds like Apple Silicon put a bug in Intel's Marketing Department.

I think it's strange they are not calling it 14th gen etc.. But the Ultra branding makes sense if that will come with ARC graphics... I'm super hyped for Meteor Lake though! :) Finally we are moving to "Intel 4"

I was the same when I bought 11900h. (Finally intel 10nm) and of course it had the worst possible battery life. Never buying intel again until they prove they can make efficient cpus in line with amd ryzen

None of this makes sense to me. Better integrated graphics on desktop are borderline useless as the integrated graphics are just a troubleshooting tool of your dedicated gpu dies. And in what way will the ultra CPUs be better? More cores for productivity like HEDT was back in the day or will they also have faster clock speeds? What will the power draw be? So many questions

apparently a raptor lake minor refresh is due this fall/winter, will be called 14th gen, since meteor lake desktop (what would have been desktop 14th gen) has been cancelled.

in the end it won't change how each chip works, you will need to waste a lot more time comparing different options when buying but it is a big win for the retailers, it is gonna make it much easier to make people buy some crappy option with good profit margins or push unsold last generation notebooks just dodging the topic it's a last gen.

If, as I suspect, Intel's CPU capabilities lineup is going to massively diversify with the introduction of tiling, the Core/Ultra differences will make a lot of sense. A Core 5 will have the same base CPU specs as the Ultra 5, the Core 7 as the Ultra 7, but the Ultra version will have different additional tiles giving it greater capabilities eg. high end iGPU, NPU, more/faster IO/memory busses, and the suspected HUGE L4 cache in the base tile. And of course you can expect the CPU tile to be a higher binned version in the ultra too.

Parkinson's Law ("Work expands to fill the time available") in action once again. Intel marketing clearly have nothing better to do.

Well that's as clear as going from iMud - to Muddier ;-)

Whatever it is, I prefer their cores more than the cortex a7, etc. (which has Philips NEON) as they can do more number crunching than the simple arithmetic involved with trimedia (text, sound, and images). Aren't M1 and M2 also for media?..

I associate Ultra with SPARC processors. But then I'm quite old... Also, Ultra literally means beyond in Latin (hence ultra-violet, or beyond violet), so I'm not sure that you can, logically speaking, have an Ultra 9 if there isn't a normal 0 to be beyond. Incidentally, when it comes to chiplet architectures and functional add-ons, then we are infringing the world of SoCs, and they rather defy simply relationships between branding and specifications. I can only imagine the future of processors will look ever more like SoCs (or is that just the future of computers in general).

So...they removed the "i" which was the biggest problem. Glad that's sorted out. 🥴

I think core will use U, P, E, F series processor Core ultra will use H, HK, HX, HS, K, KS, KF i think

An "inflection point" indeed. But perhaps not in the way they think (hope) it will be.

They should do something completely different from this, maybe make the naming scheme more blunt like Apple. With the M series its just “M” followed by “generation”, then “tier”. So M1 Pro, M2 Ultra, whatever. The tier clearly shows the use case and how good it is. I3 can be basic, i5 can be standard, i7 can be professional, and i9 can be premium. So Intel could do something along the lines of i, followed by generation, followed by the market. So i13 pro, i11 basic, i14 standard, i9 premium as examples. They can literally just attach “overclock” on the end if its overclockable, or “nGPU” if it doesnt have integrated graphics. So you would be going from core i5-11400F to i11 standard nGPU. Core i7-11700 to i11 professional. Core i9-13900KF to i13 premium overclock nGPU. Makes more sense for people who arnt familiar with this stuff and just wants a pc that fits their needs.

Man including "processor" in the name is so dumb. If everyone starts doing this then its gonna be really messy. Imagine Nvidia Graphics Card Ultra Geforce 4090 Ti and Apple iphone smartphone 15 max pro ultra. Intel Core i3 14100 Intel Ultra i3 14150 This would have made a lot of sense if their only goal was to create two classes of processors. Its been 17-18 years and a lot of people know i3s i5s etc.

Meteor lake has 5 nodes (intel 4, intel 22nm, intel 7, tsmc 6nm, tsmc 3) not one.

Correct: Intel 4 for the Compute Die, Intel 22nm for the base die, Intel 7 for the IO tile, TSMC 6nm for the SoC die. But I don't think the GFX tile is 3nm, but rather 5nm (given that it's based either on Alchemist or Battlemage), as Apple has already taken up majority of TSMC's 5nm and Arrow Lake and Celestial will only launch late 24/early 25.

Ultra marketing! In order to pay for this ultra, massive, core simplification of naming, did Intel fire all of its chip designers?

Marketing "Team, our bonuses are big, but not big enough, we need to make it bigger. So....make sh*ts up!"

I think that the new naming scheme is just a marketing move, to make the media talk about Intel. Free advertising.

Things were never clear even before 😂😅 a certain i5 could be more powerful than a certain type of 7 and so on.

why they dont just drop CORE branding? i personally more familiar with "i" than "core." also "core" itself is very generic term. wouldn't it be better when named Intel i3,i5, etc

@@GaryExplains yep, I initially started typing i386 and i486 and then I got to that portion and removed i486. Personally I thought the 'i' was a nice way to brand the chips. I also looked at the 80286 and pentium but no 'i' there.

intel should use a different unique name like the pentium, celeron, xeon line.

What a mess. The average consumer confused about what to buy now is going to be more confused. They need to make just one core and one core ultra. Make them the best they can be and dump all the other options. They only make 50 different options to bleed every last cent out of the market.

It simplifies ans streamlines customer confusion and deception!

I saw comparations where Intel gen x is better than intel gen x+1 in some tasks, same tier( if I'm correct, it was about an i9 ) , so it was confusing already, let's just hope core count, cache memory and other specs don't loose their meaning, that's all , I never in my 4-5 CPU upgrades cared if I got an last gen procesor , or a I5/7/9/3...I jumped from core duo to i7 to i3 to i5

Yeah, 10900K was better than 11900K, because it had 10 cores, while 11900K had only 8 cores. Overall better cores, but in some situations the performance per core was about the same, so having 2 more cores was better. Fortunately, this is more of the exception. Arguably, an i7 8600K was also better than an i7 9700K, because the 8600K had 6 cores with 12 threads, while the 9700K had 8 cores and 8 threads (the only i7 ever to NOT have hyperthreading).

Its getting even more confusing. I wish they had added a letter like Intel Core-5DT(Desktops), Core5-MT(Notebooks & Convertibles) and the Core-5SRV/Ultra (For Servers) and the last 2 letters for Generations.

One thing is clear: this will force the normal customer to give up and say, ok so what’s the best one? Cause that’s gonna be a ton of extra research they’ll have to do. The question hit on the head. Core ultra 5 vs Core 7?

I see it now. The "Core" chips will be crippled but sell at the current CPU prices or more. Lost my mind after keeping track of AMD ryzen name scheme for 7000 series and feeling very confused with Intel scheme.

I've never seen any explanation for that "i" stuff, going back to when they first started using it. It seems silly, and totally superfluous. Same for Motorola, for example M68000, and probably others. It would only make sense if part numbers from different companies were similar and potentially could get confused, but that seems to hardly ever happen, and after all you could just change the part number and avoid it.

It doesn't clarify anything. The more they can confuse the customers, the more money they can make.

If they only removed the "i" from the naming, not adding Ultra (on some CPU's), that would clearity one tiny bit. But adding also "Ultra" only on some CPU's, just makes more confussion instead of clearifying. Plus going from I7 to the next lower number Intel 4, is in my mind, a weird move (customers are used to higher number the better). Intel should also give more details about their plans. Keeping the "K", "H", and "U" or not etc.? Would all future Intel CPU's be Ultra, or still some in just Core family? Intel should just keep on doing the I-branding, regardless what other companies (Apple) are calling their products. After all, Intel should have more rights to use the I for their first letter in the company name, and not Apple. Steve Jobs only used the I in front of their products for "Internet". And these days with everything on internet from all brands, the I-naming from Apple lost it's meaning IMHO.

Let's hope they're not copying AMD BS mobile cpu naming that is meant to confuse customers. I'm fine with it as long as they have 14 in the model. Metior lake seem impressive and enough to warrant a fresh naming scheme.

Hey Gary, for this first iteration, the Ultra brands will represent Meteor lake products, and the mainstream brands will represent Raptor Lake Refresh. This is the whole point with this new naming scheme (for now anyway). We will see more diversification and understand this new naming scheme with Arrow Lake and Lunar Lake products later next year.

@@GaryExplains Sorry mate, I forgot to explain the RPL-R part. The RPL-R U and P variants will use the new Core naming scheme, Meteor Lake will use the Ultra. Desktop will probably remain the same (naming scheme). Ultra will help Intel to sell Meteor Lake since it is only coming to laptop.

@@ablesam raptor lake refresh should probably only for desktop. For Core line up, it will just be CPU, SOC, IO, base tile (without GPU tile). using raptor lake for 14th gen Core laptop carries no advantage compared to meteor lake when the die size can be much smaller/

Wanted to say the same, glad it was already stated. It certainly does sound pretty confusing now, but I expect to have some sense when we'll actually see the products. Like ablesam said, probably the Core non-ultra (man, will we ever have a naming scheme where, to be sure you're not confusing, you do not have to mention non-X non-XT non-whatever?) will be just 13th gen with minor improvements, while the core ultra will be the Meteor Lake CPUs which will apparently be much better, or just as good, but at a MUCH lower power consumption. I'm personally intrigued to see Intel arriving with a chip that can rival the M ones from Apple in terms of efficiency. Remember kids, it's Meteors which killed the Raptors (and the other dinosaurs)!

Ultra is the new Pro, which used to be the Plus - oh hang on 😅

That seems sad to be that you can't get a Core 9 without arc graphics...

Yes, I think it will be same as both NVIDIA's and AMD's integrate versions of their GPUs. Remember that NVIDIA has integrated GPUs in some of its processors like the Tegra.

@@GaryExplains back then there were more, Cyrix, IDT and yes AMD. These days it depends on what you want to run, Risc-V and ARM based processors with good emulation is sufficient for some x86 use cases.

Which RISC-V boards or computers are you using? From my testing I would find it hard to say that any current RISC-V computer would be suitable to replace even a fraction of x86 use cases.
