Integrating Gutenberg Content in Bricks Builder For Clients

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

A common complaint I hear about Bricks Builder for WordPress is that it's not that good for handing off to clients.
One workaround is to use Gutenberg alongside Bricks Builder templates to give control over the design to the web designer and content control to the client.
In this video, I'll demonstrate how easy it is to create custom templates and assign Gutenberg content to those templates.
Want more? You could easily add in additional custom fields using plugins like ACF (Advanced Custom Fields) or MetaBox and integrate those custom fields into your templates.

    One thing you didn't talk about is that you can have both WP and Bricks content at the same time (Unlike Elementor) So you can add two content fields, one for Bricks and one for WP in the same page and use one or the other (or both). A good example in client / dev setup is that you could allow bricks access for admin and WP only for editor and if you need to add extra nice layout using bricks for some of the content you can and or using it like a page in a page (Template style) but embed WP content inside your bricks content IYSWIM allowing a client to just edit a specific part of a bricks content page.

    Please make a short video showing this, especially how to insert Block content into multiple regions of a Bricks template.

    @@htz70 Not possible to put in "Multiple" regions as it is just one field (WP content) so it's all or nothing. But it is still good to be able to make one area of content editable by the client while surrounding it by lots of bricks content. I use it for instance to have the description field from a CPT (In my case the description for a property advert) while having property specific bricks content containing maybe tabbed content, calendars and forms for booking etc all also within a bricks theme template for the site property pages themselves. SO I can have agents add and edit property content but add other more complex elements to the same page where needed.

    @@spindreams Thanks for replying. I’m thinking of Bricks templates or one-off pages, where I want the client to use Gberg for basic content for most of the page, but the page also needs Bricks sections inserted in a few different places. Another approach would be if a Bricks Section could be inserted into a wp-page as a Gberg Block. But of course, the content in those inserted Bricks blocks would ideally be editable too, perhaps via ACF. Yeah, asking too much?

    @@WPTuts It certainly is relevant, Paul. I recently saw good advice from Kevin Geary suggesting it is good practice to use the page builder (in this case, Bricks Builder) for the layout of the website, but only use the core WP (ie Gutenberg blocks) for the data (posts, custom post types, etc). That way, if in the future the website required redesigning/restructuring using a different page builder, one would not have to recreate all the data. Basically, avoids lock-in!

    Another way I like is resuable blocks extended. Make watever you want in gutenberg save it as reusable blocks. It makes a shortcode to use in Bricks or anywhere else you want. You get a link in the admin menu with a list of all your resuble blocks. Greenshift comes with this too if I remember correctly.

    An interesting alternaitve approach. :) I think this is the point I'm trying to make. There are multiple ways in which you can hand over a Bricks built website to a client without fear of them being overwhelmed ot destroying everything.

    How would you design the post content that is pulled from Gutenberg? Because I do not see any settings for headings and stuff in the post content element. Do I have to design it in Gutenberg? I want to avoid gutenberg at all cost for design an layout as it is so bad so just the text abd design the full post content in bricks, but how?

  • @WPTuts

    @@Tom-l9h realistically you have 2 choices, use something like Advanced Themer’s Strict Editor View to allow access to a stripped back and controlled version of the Bricks editor (there’s a video on the channel about it). Or Use a plugin like GutenBricks to create patterns that the user can insert into the Gutenberg editor and you can build those patterns in Bricks and provide as much or as little control to each of those patterns. Take a look at some of the videos Ryan from WP Wired (the dev) has released showing how the plugin works. It’s a great tool to have.

    @@WPTuts I know about those options but what if I am building a blog and want to style the post content written in gutenberg? The blog content gets pulled from Gutenberg into bricks. Or should I write my blog in bricks (I write the blog not my client) and then use the post content bricks option?

    Is it possible to add a Table of Contents whilst using this template feature? Would this be done in Bricks or Gutenburg?

  • @WPTuts

    @WPTuts

    It would depend on the method of adding in the ToC. For example, if you use something like BricksExtras ToC you would need to name the container that holds the content correctly and then if you use that in your template, it should pull in the relevant headins for the ToC.

    I understand some of the reasoning behind this video but I don’t see how introducing another page builder makes things simpler. It took me a while to ween myself off Elementor - forcing me to get back to basics. It was the best thing I’ve done for ages. I’ve heard lots of good things about Bricks, but more tools/options isn’t always better. Less is more.

  • @WPTuts

    @WPTuts

    I think you misunderstood the point of the video. If you’re not using Bricks, then the topic isn’t really relevant to you. However, if you’re using Bricks and want to handoff to a client but remove access to Bricks, this is one viable solution.

    @@WPTuts Ah ok. I got here from the Wired WP site as I remember so that was the expectation. :P. I am looking for how to use Gutenbricks Template pages effectively. I also want to associate them with custom post types and ACF data. I personally use ACSS for my styling. I am very much looking forward to "that" video as I really like your content and approaches.
