Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with everyone 👍 A channel called Leave Curious is starting an initiative to create 23 million ponds in the UK. I believe that is how many gardens there are in the UK. It doesn't matter what size the pond is, or if the pond has any fish. The idea is that a network of antenna's can make our phones work, and a network of small ponds all across the UK, and preferably around the world, can do the same thing for nature. I absolutely love the idea.

In my small pond, I put the pump in a five gallon tree planter pot, I made additional holes. I filled it with the bio balls and small stones. It’s been a week and so far it’s clear. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I also added two planters with stone and iris.

Thank you kindly for all the video's. I managed to use a broken pre-mold pond, patched holes with gorilla tape, followed your strategy lairing the rock to make an above ground bog. Also bought that fitting you recommended, added pvc as the out going into an above ground, simple concrete 2x2x12 ft rectangle for comets (cheap, all I need for right now). added healthy pond bacteria tabs right into the intake to the bog (got injected directly into the stones). CRYSTAL clear water in no time. Somehow managed to get tadpoles in the bog within the first couple of weeks, in an above ground (shrugging shoulders). Using pool noodles for floating baby plants like basil. The ultimate goal is to actually use this setup for growing veggies aquaponic (at the very least stuff the chickens will love). If I didn't live all the way in the states, we would have made a killing working together! Keep up the great work!

Hey Kev! I just finished a very large (2.5 tons of gravel) "Bog river" addition to my goldfish pond fed by a rock fountain and draining back to the pond. It is working great, but now I'm thinking about what the heck I am to do for winter time. We get well below freezing here and questions arise in how to prep correctly: Should I keep water flowing through the bog during the winter? Is that at all useful, or is it too cold for beneficial bacteria anyway? Or should I pump it dry in winter prep?

  • @Ozponds

They say that the bacteria goes dormant under 10C. I’m skeptical there must be bacterias that continue to operate in low temps. My water is currently about 5C (winter here), I keep everything running. So my answer, if you can keep it all running, if you can’t make sure no water is left in the plumbing lines when you shut down for winter.

Hi Kev😊. Thanks for all your videos. Very informatives. I am looking to build a 2.4m circular pond (ideally 60 cm deep to give plenty room for the goldfishs to swim). I have the liner & underliner. I also got 2x 100 liters rain barel tanks with lid. 2 full black plastic pipes of 27 cm in diameter and about a meter long each which i can cut in half to use for intake build. I also have a 60 cm black bin which i wanted to use in the middle of the pond to create like a little island and fill with stones and plants. I will try hook up 2 pumps to a solar system (another on going project). I will have a lots of plants so i hope they do most the cleaning. Do you reckon i should build some type of intake like this for such small pond? The pumps I was thinking of using were 2 x 800liters/h. I am conscient that it is a bit on the weak size but wanted to keep my project on the cheapest scale possible. Would you have perhaps any suggestions of optimum design? Thanks. Lilian.

An intake bay should prevent your pumps needing regular maintenance, but it might ruin the look of your perfectly circular pond. Have you seen how I place the pumps in my small ponds with a filter sponge over the top?? Something like that might be better for you.

3:58 - "liner in front of void space" - what is the role of the liner in this situation?

Same as the excavated shelf. Move water up over the top to create a weir. The shallow water, high flow creates that surface tension that pulls in debris.

Not related to the video but I remembered you keep certain rainbow fish in your ponds. I was wondering if you could tell me what species they are. I see your ponds are at 5C at the moment, and mine rarely get that low. Might be worth experimenting with a few if I can get my hands on some. Cheers!

The common name is Murray River Rainbow fish, this is their Latin name- Melanotaenia fluviatilis. I have a feeling though many species are sold under the same name and come from much warmer waters.
