it is correct question, technically good , functional it can do less material more simple and cheap

There are 2 reasons, I think: 1/ Techniquely, it helps strenthen the thin metal latch, preventing it to be bent if there's a large force applied on the door. 2/Aesthetically, it looks more sophisticate.
I could open it with a stick. 🤣
