Suji toast is a popular Indian snack or breakfast item made with semolina (suji or rava) and vegetables. It's a simple and tasty dish that's easy to prepare. Here’s a basic recipe for suji toast:
Ingredients:
1/2 cup semolina (suji or rava)
1/4 cup yogurt
1finely chopped vegetables (like capsicum, onions, tomatoes, carrots, etc.)
2-3 green chili, finely chopped (optional)
1/2 teaspoon chili flakes
Salt to taste
1/2 teaspoon red chili powder (optional)
Water, as needed
Bread slices (white or brown)
Method:
Prepare the batter: In a mixing bowl, combine semolina (suji), yogurt, chopped vegetables, green chili, ginger paste, salt, red chili powder, cumin seeds, and baking soda (if using). Mix well.
Adjust consistency: Add water gradually to make a thick batter. The batter should be thick enough to spread but not too runny.
Prepare toast: Heat a non-stick pan or a griddle over medium heat. Place a bread slice on the pan and spread a thick layer of the semolina batter evenly over the bread slice.
Cook on low-medium heat: Drizzle a little oil around the edges of the toast. Cover and cook on low-medium heat until the bottom side is golden brown and crisp.
Flip and cook: Carefully flip the toast and cook the other side until it is golden brown and crisp as well. Press gently with a spatula to ensure even cooking.
Serve hot: Remove from the pan and cut into triangles or squares. Serve hot with ketchup, chutney, or a cup of chai.
Tips:
You can customize the vegetables as per your preference.
Adjust the spice levels by adding more or less green chili and red chili powder.
Ensure the batter is spread evenly on the bread slice for uniform cooking.
Cooking on low-medium heat ensures that the toast cooks through without burning.
Suji toast is delicious and can be enjoyed as a breakfast dish, evening snack, or even packed in lunchboxes for kids. It's crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, with a flavorful mix of vegetables and spices.
