I have restored VWs since 1980. I am 78 and restoring a 1958 Beetle for my son, the last one. I could not agree with you more on EVERYTHING you say, including Wolfsberg and don't buy anything EMPI if you can avoid it. I do it all, paint, interior bodywork and engine. This VW is the same Panama Beige my 1965 is that I restored in 2013. The only thing I can add is that it helps to put a bead of 3M weatherstrip cement around the grommets from the inside if you are having trouble and let it dry overnight. 3M weatherstrip adhesive cleaner works well for cleanup. This 1958 has been hit in the rear so the rear bumper will take much time to align, You can see my VW restoration videos on Bill Tate's KZread channel.

Just about to put my bumpers back on after paint. Look similar! 1966 and L87 paint! Put windshield and hood seal in yesterday and today is bumper time. I have the rear brackets in, but that bumper had been hit so there is a slight bend- but they are all original so I want to keep them. Thanks for the tips!!

I have just fitted Wolfsburg West Bumpers. What I have noticed is when the top tube supports go through the Grommet there’s a gap. Is this normal, I have no more adjustment. I have used genuine vw grommets. Would you use silicone sealant?

My 62 bug doesn’t have the holes or overriders.. euro style bumper. Is that normal?

Yea that one was super clean too. hood would just drop right in the hole and lined up totally perfect. same with the deck lid perfectly lined up.
