Installing Titan RV Fridge and Roof Vent Cooling Fans

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video, I demo then install 3 different multipurpose rackmount fans from a company called Titan. - www.titan-cd.com/en/index/ind...
To see more information check out the blog post on LoveYourRV.com - www.loveyourrv.com/installing...
(Fair Disclosure: I received the Titan fans free of charge. However, I’m not an affiliate for Titan, and I received no monetary compensation for this video. - Ray)
Two of the fans are for use in the RV refrigerator rear ventilation stack and the third is a cooling fan for the RV interior designed to mount in a roof vent or window sill.

TTC-SC09TZ 120MM - goo.gl/DC6tXH
TTC-SC21 140MM - goo.gl/eR5rhT
The first part of the video shows me demoing the fans and measuring the amperage draw. Then I proceed to install each fan. The smaller fridge fan gets mounted into the sidewall grill, and the larger one gets installed on the roof vent. The interior fan gets installed into our bedroom roof vent.
I explain how I mounted and wired the fans and controller boxes and gave my likes and dislikes. I'll use them for a few months and come back with an updated review.

    Thank you very much for this demonstration & review! One of these little fans can be installed across from or above a heating source to spread the warmth. About 35 years ago, my appliance repair husband installed a couple of tiny fridge fans above the wall heater to blow the rising heat down & it worked surprisingly well - quiet too. I'm pleased to see the same basic concept applied by Titan. Whenever I see people mention using computer fans, I wonder about the fridge fans & now here they are. Cool!

    As usual, this was a good review, thanks, Ray. I ended up not liking the fans in part because they didn't seem to fit anywhere and I don't like the lack of a rheostat on the fan you installed in your bathroom vent. I don't like having to press a button multiple times to turn something up. I did like the temperature probe on the fridge vent fan, seemed to work well. Thanks again.

    Allan Mac Donald , Vent fans are fairly easy to upgrade. We just updated ours to the newer maxxair 10 speed reversible where the lid is the cover. Really nice fan that takes up most of the hole for great air extraction. I’m an older guy and was done in about 3-4 hours in the hot Florida summer sun (so water breaks were needed).

    These appear to be audio rack/computer rack fans. That might explain the fitment challenges. Also, there are very high quality fans like this that can purchased on Amazon etc. and are very affordable. Available in a variety of speeds and sizes. I have eight 12v computer fans of various sizes all over my rig and if used in total, all draw much less than my fantastic fan. Choices are a good thing. Great video! Thanks

    Hello Ray, tks for your video, always well done and interesting. I was wondering if the fans draw more amps when they are not against the table since in order to have max load on them they have to pump air. On the table they just move the air within the fan casing. Maybe not much difference. The clearance between the fan blade and the casing look pretty large to me...?

    Great video as usual Ray! If you ever change out the bathroom fan I’d be interested in your take on the Maxxfan (higher end model with full auto thermostat control). I’m considering putting a few of them on our coach to help move air without much noise, especially at night. Since I installed the solar system on our rig I’ve been concentrating on efficient DC power items when considering gadgets. My solar system is pretty large and it can even support air conditioning overnight when boondocking so long as it’s intermittent rather than continuous. However, I think a couple of MaxxFans would do as good a job, be much quieter and obviously a lot more efficient. The reason I’m leaning more towards the MaxxFans instead of Fantastic fans is due to being able to use them in any weather. I understand the Fantastic fan will automatically close if it senses rain, as will the lower end MaxxFan currently in our coach, but I don’t want to be restricted just because it’s raining. As a matter of fact, sometimes that’s when it’s needed most, especially when cooking inside out of wet but warm weather. Would be interested on your thoughts on this. PS, we are headed into WA this week, should be getting close to the border in the coming weeks. Would love to swing by and say howdy if we make it across. 👍🏻

    I need something like this to cool the coils behind the fridge on outside n stack....maybe up in the top vent would be best but not sure how to hook it up to power? And would it run the battery down when I'm boondocking? My fridge gets warm inside when its in the 90s. Old Dometic....works overnight but can't keep up in daytime summer. Sometimes it does...strange can't figure it out but I notice when the coils aren't as hot in back it cools better. Works better on shore power too but I'm guessing because its on the whole time and never being turned off so it has time. When we move I shut it off and the lp for safety. Then its hit a miss boondocking. Fans might help but not sure how to hook up to power....

    The fridge roof vent cover has slots on the side where the air flows out. With the fans you are basically trying to aid the natural chimney action of the fridge vent column, warm air rises. A fan placed at the roof top pulls the air up the chimney or fans at the bottom push the air in. Works pretty well for hot weather.

    Removing heat is never a bad thing around the fridge. The fridge stack is designed to have air flow from convection but I think the fans help that quite a bit. I find my fridge is already cooling faster when I add new food to it.

    I am a Gaming Computer and home Server builder. These fans seem very much like computer case cooling fans (high and quiet draw multi-blades) That being the case; fans are usually measured in Millimeters over inches :P These fans have almost nothing for power draw and are made to be that way. If I, or you, could fabricate some type of retainer, $20 to $40 worth of fans could go a long way. Temp Sensors is a great add though

Made a world of difference. www.loveyourrv.com/replacing-my-noisy-dometic-dm2652-rv-fridge-fan/ They use a little thermal couple attached the cooling piping to control it. I have listed the dimensions in the description and on the blog post in mm. Thought in the video I'd do inches as most of my audience is viewing from the US and can relate better. :) Cheers! Ray

    Thanks for your time on this! I do have a question though, I was under the impression that you didn't necessarily want to have a fan blowing cool air onto the heat tubes on the cooling unit for the fridge. As those tubes need to get to a hot enough temperature to evaporate the ammonia to perpetuate the cooling process. Do you believe the lower fans to cause issue on your setup? I also have always been concerned about generating extra wind near the propane fired portion of the cooling unit. The upper fans I understand entirely and that makes all the sense in the world as at that point the amount of air that would be drawn in is so minimal and they are more for just removing the Heat that has already been dissipated from the tubes. Again, this is a question as I don't really know this was what I was concerned with when contemplating doing the same type of install myself. Again great work thanks for all the amperage readings really helps out with the decision making. :-)

    You can just go with the roof fan if you want. But it sucks the air out and that air is drawn in through the bottom vent so effectively the same thing. I went with both as I had them. I've experienced excellent fridge cooling on these hot summer days. The fans don't draw massive amounts of air, just enough to remove the hot air trapped in the fridge vent stack. The flue, boiler, and piping work fine, just think how cold they get on a winter day and still work, so a little fan air on a hot day isn't going to affect it. The fridge flame is quite protected by metal shielding so it won't blow out. I've been camped in big winds that would have forced much more air in there and never had an issue with the gas flame blowing out.

    The outside fridge fan, what do the fans do....suck air in? Or do they blow air out the fridge vent cover, keeping the compartment cool?

  • @LoveYourRV

    @LoveYourRV

    5 жыл бұрын

    The RV fridge needs to have airflow in the back area outside to run efficiently. If it gets too hot back there then cooling suffers and the food area gets too warm. Most RV fridges have a bottom and top vent panel outside and air flow takes place by convection. Cool air is sucked in the bottom vent as the inside hot air rises up the stack to the top vent. Adding a fan to suck the air in and push it out the top vent helps this convection action work even better thus the fridge runs even more efficiently and food stays colder.

  • @darrellboyd

    @darrellboyd

    6 жыл бұрын

    Thanks, I hadn't thought about the size of the blade impacting the noise level. In a 12" box fan you've only got so much space for blades, so you're saying that larger blades would presumeably be quieter? Would the surface area of the larger blades, if equal to the small blades be as efficient as the small blades in terms of CFM?

    Allan Eaton Well, I'm a simple used car salesman that only knows a little about this stuff. Hard to say because I said smaller and larger but I didn't mention how that relates to the length and width. You'd have to factor all that in. The shape of the fan would also have to be factored in to calculate efficiency. I'm sure there's a lot of websites or KZread videos with the technical data you're looking for. I think some fans are noisy because they don't design/calibrate them correctly.

    About four years ago I bought a refrigerator fan set which mounted on the fins of the evaporator inside the fridge. ($40.00 on eBay and uses small computer-type fans.) They circulate the air and help keep items much cooler than without the fans. Recently, one of the two fans died. I bought replacements for both fans since the second fan would probably die soon, too. The new fans I bought on eBay have ball bearings instead of sleeve bearings and should last much longer. The fans cost only around $5.00 each, delivered. I don't know why when identical fans are put into a simple housing or come with a little mounting hardware, their cost multiplies several times. Let the buyer beware.

    @@LoveYourRV Hi Ray, Just installed the Titan TTC-SC20 fan racks at the top of the vertical refrigerator ventilation "shaft" when it exits out the roof, centered just below the refrigerator vent base (with the mesh wire like yours in this KZread video) and 1/2" below the roof line, leaving about 2+ inches clearance up to the Norcold vent/lid cover. 1. So how did you determine where the "good spot" turned out to be i.e. where to locate (and attach) the end of the temperature sensor wire in the 5' of vertical ventilation space behind the refrigerator? The Titan instructions say that in Auto mode (which in another reply above, you say you usually leave the controller set to) the fans will come on at a slow speed when the sensor detects a temperature above 68 degrees F. The fans' speed will increase proportionately until full speed is reached at about 103 degrees F. 2. We found that if you mount the rack on top of the refrigerator vent base (with the wire mesh), the fans are blowing directly against the Norcold vent lid/cover with less than an inch of clearance. It seems that the air flow (esp. at the higher fan speeds) would be restricted with some it possibly pushing back against the spinning fan blades and slowing their optimum rpm speed. Concurrently, if some of the air is "backing up" under the cover and can't efficiently exit out the lower edges of the vent lid/cover, it would interfere/slow the vertical flow of the rising heated air being pulled up from below...reducing the cooling effectiveness objective we're trying to achieve. 3. How much amperage does the Titan controller use when turned on but in a "standby" mode when the fans are NOT running? 4. How much amperage did you measure the system uses when fans are running at maximum? Thank you!

    @@rvingizfun4757 I actually have 2 sets of fans one at the top and one at the bottom. I did some amperage tests in the video and they draw very little current. Not sure about the Norcold as I have a Dometic fridge and vent cover, seem to move enough air. Basically, you are trying to aid the natural chimney effect of the fridge cooling stack. Either have the fan pushing in the air at the bottom or sucking at the top for a good flow. My old OEM fan from my previous fridge had the fan placed just under the cooling fins but that would mean removing the fridge to install. As far as temp sensors I just placed them in the general area of the fridge cooling fins. I didn't mess with it too much. On a hot day the fans run and the fridge stays cool. :) Around 90F out today and my fridge top shelf is just above freezing. Here was an update it did on the fans - kzread.info/dash/bejne/nW2Z1ayDipm1h5c.html

    A few years back I upped my system to 500 with an addition of a ground panel - Here is the complete system, I'm basically satisfied with now - www.loveyourrv.com/diy-rv-boondocking-power-system/ The system has served our needs well. I could still add some more panels on the roof but don't feel an overwhelming need to. We've done 2 boondocking snowbird seasons with the 500 watts. Only changes I've done is a new cat fuse and swapped out a damaged ground panel - www.loveyourrv.com/replacing-damaged-portable-solar-panel-plus-new-mounting/ www.loveyourrv.com/installed-catastrophic-fuse-rv-battery-bank/ With my new 3200 watts wireless remote generator I now have I don't think I will be changing much as if I need to run a high wattage item like a microwave, hairdryer, toaster, etc, its just an easy press of a key fob button. :) www.loveyourrv.com/energizer-portable-inverter-generator-review/ Cheers! For my wife, YES! for me no, I can sleep in full daylight but she is very much bugged by any little light at night. She usually pulls the curtain that divides the bed from the shower area when we sleep as lots of light comes in from the shower skylight and roof vent. I can always tape over the LEDs or I can disassemble and disconnect them. ;) Have done that in the past with various devices like electric heaters. Cheers, Ray

    I'm not sure but I think if you remove it the fridge may stop cooling. Here is a video that explains the operation - kzread.info/dash/bejne/h4CBss6Gia_Xl84.html Easiest thing to do is disconnect it from the control board at the back and see if the cooling stops or gets cooler.

    @@LoveYourRV Hello Ray, So, That same day, I disconnected the thermistor from the Motherboard in the back of the refrigirator. I made sure I could see the flame to check if the fridge would shut off after I pulled out the connection. It did not. It has been running well for the past month. The refrigerator does shut itself off at times and comes back on. So I guess it has a limit low temp.

    The fans I put on the bottom are sucking in fresh outside air and the fans on the top roof vent are sucking out warm inside air. Basically, the fans are set to draw air into the lower fridge vent and expel it out the roof vent which helps the nature chimney effect of the fridge ventilation system.
