Installing - Takagi Tankless Water Heaters

Learn the basics on how to install a tankless water heater. I cover water quality, gas sizing, venting and electric. They highly recommend installations are done by a plumbing professional. Update 03/26/14 - I haven't been employed with Takagi since 2010 (I left for a new opportunity outside of the plumbing industry). They were acquired by the A.O. Smith corporation. They still make a great tankless water heater. In fact, mine is still running, and has been without a single incident.

Had a TK2 for 14 years and if I could find a control board I'd have it another 14. It's installed in the garage and looks brand new with the cover off. Replacing with a takagi tk-510u-i 200.

This was an exact replacement for the old one that lasted about 10 years. kzread.infoUgkx7yWIKcrbA9KMHkGSfcgxW2lsjHT6B8Sh The top of my mitigation tube by my roofline was just a 90 elbow which allowed too much debris to fall down into the fan, eventually ruining it. Without this issue, I bet it would have kept running another 10 years. When I replaced this fan, I added an extra elbow joint so the top tube now it does a 180, which should solve that problem. The radon guys around here wanted to charge me a $300 diagnostic fee, then parts/labor (probably close to $600 total). I installed this all by myself in about an hour for the cost of the fan; it would probably be even easier/faster with two people. FYI the manufacturer's warranty greatly differs depending on whether you install it yourself (1 yr warranty) or have a licensed installer do it (10 yrs).

Great Video. I installed my Takagi TK Jr in my 1500 Sq Ft home about 6 years ago and it has more than paid itself over comapared to using my oil fired boiler. We absolutely love it, other than the annual maintenance of cleaning the heat exchanger. (Which I perform myself with the great instructions provided by Takagi) we have had zero issues. Great Product's

Hi, our old gas " on demand / tank-less water heater system is messed up. This one has a recalculation pump. It seem we only get hot water when another hot water tap is open than it seems to heat water fine than after a minute the water flow completely shuts off. If I turn the hot water valve off for a minute or so it will turn on with good flow for about a minute than completely shuts off the water flow. Anyone every had this issue, and how did you fix it ? Thanks

We have a T-H2-DV Tankless water heater in our finished crawl space. It was installed new, 2 years ago when we built the house. For the past 3 months, our water pressure has been really low. (No softener as of yet). I flushed the water heater with muriatic acid for 2 continous hours. The pressure in the bathroom sink, and yub is normal again, but the kitchen sink still has very low pressure. Is there anything else that I can do?

Update... After letting the kitchen faucet run for 20 minutes, the pressure is now normal.

Thank you all for your comments. Here's an update. 1. The video was shot before I could fix the electrical connection. It has the proper 3/4" cable clamp/romex connector now. 2. It has been in service in my home since 2007 and has worked without flaw. With 2 small children I am very comfortable knowing we don't have the scald issues like we did with a tank.

Half amp no, T-H2 draws 240 watts as the two 3 phase brush-less fans use 100v DC. I like the engineering though and quality.

Can the water input of this heater come from a water boiler that heats up from solar panels? When the day is sunny and the solar panels heat up the water tank then the gas heater will receive hot water as an input, means is not necessary to start boiling water if the incoming temperature is high....if the solar panels didn't heat up the water tank then the Gas Tankless Water Heater takes over....In theory it sounds like it works but my worries are if the Gas Heater will overheat the water if the inlet is already partially hot.Anyone?

Essentially, yes. Please contact a local plumber though for current information.

I use to be an engineer there. This product is pretty bad. Costs a lot especially the venting if you have to locate it a far distance from where the termination is. If your using this for high demand meaning more then one faucet it's likely you will see premature failure in the heatexchanger as well as some flow valve and sensors. We tested in commercial settings and the heatexchangers always burst because of the acidic condensation of the flue gases resulted in rapid deteriotion of the the thin copper walls. The variable fan regularly needed replacement which is very expensive plus the labor to replace it. Its a headache really, i'd stick to regular water tanks, they are proven.

Takagi has Horrible customer service. Heater broke in less than a year. had the heater fixed and they would not pay the labor as stated in the warranty
