Installing Batter Boards with String Line [Shop Foundation]

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I am building a 20x30 shop and its time to break ground. Batter Boards are used to find the corners of a building and to find level. I am using some old deck boards ripped down to make stakes. You can use any board you have laying around or you can buy them specially made for this project. Batter Boards are placed out so that 3 legs are driven into the ground and horizontal boards are connected level from those. Start on the highest location and move down to the lowest spot. A string level can be used or a laser level to make sure all battery boards are at the same height. The spot where the strings cross is the location of the building corner.

I'm having so much trouble as a first-timer trying to get my foundation square. My soil is stable but full of river rock. So every time I put something in the ground the sticks get wonky and don't go in the ground where I want. Hopefully, the batter boards will be the solution I need! The diagonal is actually 36’- 11/16”. I wouldn’t be so dismissive of nearly 3/4” in a structure that small. As you referenced later on in the video, you want to be as accurate as possible in the foundation stage. Mistakes and rounding errors now will follow you all the way up the building.

  • @rmoreland3583

    @rmoreland3583

    2 ай бұрын

    psidvivious, you obviously have no idea how to set a foundation and the math involved. His 36' at the early stage is only a point at which to get started. After all 4 corners are marked then a measurement is pulled diagonally from opposite corners. Adjustments are made depending on how much out of square the diagonals are. Temporary markers are placed to adjust for corrections and diagonals are pulled again and adjustments are made, then diagonals are pulled again and again until the diagonals are exactly the same thereby achieving Pythagorans triangle. The way this guy achieved his project, although there are better and simpler ways, is correct because the actual exact number does not have be know at the starting point, only the finish point.

    @@rmoreland3583 Lol, You’re the kind of guy I know I would be letting go within about 2 hours. How many times are you going to go back and forth, walking from corner to corner measuring diagonals? If you are doing the Pythagorean calculation, you already know what the diagonal measurement is supposed to be. Why are you measuring over and over wasting all that time. Twice is all you need. Once to set it and twice to double check. But then again you’re probably the same guy that doesn’t actually do the math but instead thinks like diagonals equals square. Surprise, they don’t. You can have like diagonals without having a single square corner (isosceles trapezoid). Thanks for coming! I think the supermarket down the street is hiring!

    Your math needs work, if you really want to get precise the square root of 1300 works out to 36 and 7/128th, or less than 36 and 1/16th which is the smallest increment i’ve ever seen on a tape measure, aka insignificant.

    @@21trips Exactly my point. Your attempt to correct (possibly heckle) him at 21/32 was wrong and would have been far more significant of an issue being between 3/4 and 1/2 of an inch vs just reducing to the whole number of 36 although I could see an argument to use 1/16 since it’s a wee bit closer to absolute exact answer than 0 and is the smallest increment on the tape. However, given the minor inherent inaccuracies of string placement and eyesight, any attempt to get more exact than 36 and 1/8th is pointless.

    @@21trips True but 21/32 is still wrong and 1/16th is closer to the precise measurement than 1/32 so still not useful. Also if you need that kind of precision you need calibrated metal tape measures and some form of uniform stakes that allow precise measurements to be taken. All goes back to your first comment still being wrong, and in terms of building science, really wrong.
