Installing an Original Saw Radial Arm Saw: Saturday in the Woodworking Shop #26 with Andrew Pitts

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I've always wanted a great radial arm saw, and the Original Saw with it's old DeWalt design fits the bill. Watch as I install a new Original Saw model 3512 in my workshop.
This is the twenty sixth in a series of videos where Andy answers questions he has received about his woodworking videos, and sprinkles in a little of his other woodworking shop experience, as well. Viewers are welcome to post questions about his videos or his workshop on Andy's channel AndyPitts1000 and he will try to answer them in a future episode.
These woodworking videos show how Andrew Pitts makes his fine custom furniture in his woodworking workshop in Virginia. He also often demonstrates new uses for his ShopBot Desktop CNC routing machine, and has included other useful videos such as how to photograph furniture.

I have the identical Craftsmen saw with the same lack of power . Hadn't thought to upgrade till now and can't afford the beast you were fortunate enough to aquire but DeWalt is what I'll be keeping my eyes open for.

Hi Andy. About 37 years ago I worked for Black and Decker in Charleston, WV.I repaired heavy duty coal mining tools. DeWalt was owned or affiliated with Black and Decker so I occasionally worked on them. They were and always have been the best. I kick myself often for not getting one back then. You will love the new one. Thanks for sharing with us, Steve

I've had my DeWalt 1400 for years now, totally refurbished it from scratch. It has never failed me, I can do everything a tablesaw can do in 80% less space than a T.S. too, plus surface plane (got the attachment). I'm taking it with me when I die.

Hi Andrew, the motor gave up on my radial arm saw last week so i need to get a new one. Yours looks nice. I mounted a new blade in my cabinet saw today, a diamond one. What a beautiful cut. Absolute no tear out.

+Jan Elfstedt Hi Jan, I called Original Saw to find the nearest distributor, who is Tom Temple in Pennsylvania. Had no problems with delivery. Never have seen a diamond blade for wood. What's the make? I'll have to look that up.

What a beautiful RAS! It sounds very nice when you turn it on. I too used a Craftsman RAS for a while. Except I could never get square cuts from it. I thought all RAS were inferior by design. Seeing your new RAS makes me reconsider my disdain for radial arm saws. Your shop is really nice. I someday aspire to such greatness.

+DriverDude100 I was always surprised by the accuracy of my Craftsman, considering the physics of a RAS. But for cross cutting material down to size, it's a lifesaver for me.

I had a problem with getting a 90 degree cross cut. I finally figured out that the fence had a very slight curve. You could not see it unless you checked it with a stright edge as long as the fence. Once I fixed that the accuracy problems went away.

A negative 2 degrees blade is a must for these saws.

  • @Andrewpittsfurnituremaker

    @Andrewpittsfurnituremaker

Good point. For those not familiar with a radial arm saw, a positive rake angle on the teeth will make the blade want to walk in to the cut, sometimes quite forcefully. The negative rake tooth tends to grab the wood less.

Looks great Andrew.. Im envious of your newest addition. I need to spend some set up time on my Dad's old 1961 Delta/Rockwell Super 990 Turret radial arm saw. I want to use it as a dedicated 90 degree cut off saw/ dado saw, but right now I cant trust it to be accurate. I like the idea of chucking an allen wrench to the saw arbor to get the table height set right.

  • @Andrewpittsfurnituremaker

+Scott Kaye The allen wrench techinque came from the Original Saw manual. It worked great, and much better than using the blade itself.

I do like that technique. In the past I have flipped my motor 90 degrees and used the arbor face down against the table surface with a feeler gauge. But having the motor flipped vertically doesn't leave much to get that feeler gauge in. to measure.

Great saw, but you were definitely being aggressive with the old 10 inch. Just admit you wanted the new saw. I have a old 3516. I am told that it is the model that your new one is based off. They are great saws.
