    More people should do videos like this. Short, sweet, and straight to the point! 😊 just edit all the "I'm sorry, my dog was whining and he needed to pee." Or "there was a pizza delivery guy outside". Most viewers don't care. Lol. But this video is great because it is defense nicely the opposite of what I had just mentioned.

    Thank you, RJ! I am in the process of making more. Car seats can be so confusing and sometimes we just need to visualize how exactly to do something! It was loud on the plane, but I figure people can see what I'm doing too!

    Hi! It really depends on the plane and your child. I've traveled a lot with my kiddo, so our normal routine is that she walks ahead of me while I carry the car seat, with backpack on my back. I also have a small backpack that she uses for her own toys and books. In some planes you may be able to put it in front of your body and walk while in some I have had to put at shoulder level to not hit the plane seats. It's totally manageable with a 2 year old! Safe travels!

    Hi! This is the Cosco Scenera Next. I like it for young kids who are under 40 pounds and 40 inches. So what is appropriate for your situation may vary. The majority of US car seats are certified for use on the plane. Is there one you’re looking at?

    Hi Courtney!! Are you looking for a convertible? This is the Cosco Scenera Next. It is probably the most popular travel seat because it is extremely light and can rear-face as upright as needed. It does go to just 40 pounds both rear- and forward-facing, so it usually doesn’t get used forward-facing, but because it is cheap (under $50) people don’t usually mind that. Other popular travel convertibles include: the Safety 1st Guide 65 (goes to higher limits and will be longer-lasting); The Graco Contender 65, this seat won’t likely be able to rear-face on the plane because it is not compact enough, but it has a norethread harness which makes it very easy to adjust height and more overall padding than many other seats. It is also more long-lasting than the next, but weighs a bit more (15 pounds compared to 10 and under for the other seats I’m mentioning); Evenflo SureRide is also a light seat with a tall shell These are seats I see often for flight and each have their pros and cons. A lot of it depends on your child’s height and weight and whether they have good enough head control to sit forward-facing on the plane (and if you are ok with that). Safe travels!

    We did this with our daughter when we flew recently, but she fussed about the buckle being right under her bum. We ended up having to loosen the strap so I didn’t fall right under her bottom which I know isn’t as safe but it was the only way to keep her from crying the whole trip. Do you have any suggestions on how we could address this?

    Hi! I have the same car seat and will be flying with it for the first time. When installed rear facing, does it allow the seat in front to recline? I am afraid there won’t be enought spade and I’ll be forced to install forward facing. Thanks!

  • @milesaway5164

    Hi FC! In most of the flights I have taken, the seat in front of my car seat has not been able to recline. I have only ever had one person complain, and it was actually not even the person it affected. When I pointed out that I was doing what was safest for my child, they immediately dropped it. In most cases, the car seat does need to be installed very upright to be rear-facing on the plane. For a child with good head control and no breathing issues, this is ok (and usually just fine comfort-wise). If you have a version of the Next that states a child must be 2 to forward-face in that seat, you can point this out to the flight attendant if it is an issue. In many cases, this is enough to leave you be. Sometimes, they may be able to move you to a different place on the plane where it is no longer an issue. Or, they can ask you to forward-face. Often, with enough push back, they will relent, but the captain of the plane does get the final say. My daughter is just turned 2 and in the several flights we have taken, it has never been a problem. I would hope for the best, but of course, be prepared for the worst and know how much you want to push the issue. For me, this would very much depend on the age of the child. At 2, I am not as concerned about being rear-facing, but if she were under 1, I definitely would have pushed it more. Please feel free to contact me if you have further questions! You can also email me at LindsayAndersenCPST@gmail.com. Safe travels!

    Hi! so which easy to travel convertible would you recommend with a closed belt path, for those that are sensitive to the buckle?

  • @milesaway5164

    @milesaway5164

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi Gabriel! That's a really great question. Convertible car seats with closed belt paths are extremely limited on the market right now. I'm also not sure how old your kiddo is, so I will give you a whole run-down real fast! First, if a child still fits in their infant car seat, I would use that first. Most infant car seats can be installed baseless on the plane and the buckle would then be above the child. This tends to be the most convenient and almost always fits well rear-facing on the plane. In the convertible category, the Cosco Scenera Next tends to be very popular because it is so light but as you noticed, it does not have a closed belt path. I have stuck a blanket around my child's legs and she has been ok overall, but I know every child is different. One option with a closed rear-facing belt path is the Diono Radian. It is a very heavy car seat, but it can be folded in half and comes with pads to turn it into a backpack. It would almost certainly need the angle adjuster to make it more upright rear-facing (it sits very reclined without) and even then, I cannot guarantee it would fit on many planes rear-facing. If you were to go this route, it would definitely also need a seatbelt extender to install as you would otherwise get the seatbelt stuck in the belt path and have to wait for maintenance to come fix it to get back off. Another option, if your child is old enough, is the Graco Contender 65. It does not have a closed belt path rear-facing, but does have one forward-facing. If you are comfortable with your child going forward-facing on the plane, you would very easily adjust the harness to be at/above kiddo's shoulders and go that direction and then turn it rear-facing again in the car. I do recommend flipping the buckle when installing on a plane forward-facing. This way when you go to uninstall, you can slightly recline the plane seat and fit your hand behind the car seat to more easily unbuckle. This will keep it from getting stuck (and again having to call maintenance). These are the options I recommend most often. I know none are ideal, but one may work well for you! I can also link to videos of installing in many of these situations if you need it. Have a great day!

    We keep our 23-month old rear facing in the car. Is it recommended to do so also on the plane? Beyond the fact that maybe it could save the person in front of us from being kicked:-)

  • @milesaway5164

    @milesaway5164

    Hi Viviana! Unfortunately, we don’t have great injury data regarding planes and restrained children. This is what I feel strongly about: -Young children without good head control should always be rear-facing. -Car seat manufacturer guidelines should be followed. If a car seat is not to be used forward-facing before a certain age or height or weight, it shouldn’t. -Because what we are most protecting them from is unexpected turbulence and runway incidents, I do choose to keep my 18 month old rear-facing on a plane. If the plane were to strike another plane or hit something in forward motion, rear-facing should be protective. This is assuming your car seat fits rear-facing, as some have tall shells and do not I hope this helps a little. So sorry for taking multiple days to respond! I am more than happy to continue chatting and answering questions and will be more prompt now that we have survived the great GI illness of 2017!

    ugh! Sorry to hear y'all have been ill! Hope you are well on the way to recovery. My LO is 23-months, and we'll be keeping her rear-facing until her Cosco Next and Maxi Cosa 85 say otherwise. Good to hear you agree. I'm sort of dreading installing the Cosco on our trip as it's a budget airline and don't pre-board families. But hey, hopefully people will be cool about us taking some time installing the seat. Thanks again for your feedback!

    Are you traveling with a second adult? When we have 2 adults, my husband will take our kiddo and stand in the row behind or across (if nobody's sitting there) while I install the seat. This way we can kind of be out of the way while taking our time. When I've gone alone, I've just set her on the seat next to me. I've been lucky to have kind flight attendants who kind of just made sure she didn't take off. Be prepared to install the Cosco fairly upright, as on planes with little leg room, that will be required when installing rear-facing. You could probably see that from the video. That was a Southwest flight. If push comes to shove and you really can't get it to fit, you can install it forward-facing. And just remember that it has to go on a window seat. I still get nervous after tons of flights under my belt, but it sure feels good once you're all installed and settled in! I hope you have a great trip!

    Lokailauren hi! You are correct. It is a very tight space when rear-facing. In most cases, I have found people to be very nice and not recline their seats (since it’s for the safety of my child). In some cases, the flight attendant can move that disgruntled passenger or find you a more suitable spot. It is incredibly important to know your rights and the limits of your car seat. In my case, I was able to point out that my car seat had to be rear-facing because my child was under age 1, which was stated on my car seat. You can bring your car seat manual with its rules with you. Have those pages tabbed or highlighted and know where it states these limits. You can also print out the FAA circular, which states the rules for child passenger safety on US airlines. If your child is old enough and meets the height and weight minimums for your seat, you may also have to make a decision of how hard you are willing to fight keeping them rear-facing vs turning them (but I would never agree to breaking the actual rules of my car seat manufacturer). Unfortunately, many flight attendants on undertrained on child passenger safety.

  • @milesaway5164

    Was it rear-facing so it was hitting the legs? In this case, I would just pad it a bit with a blanket. Unfortunately, there is not much you can do with where the buckle will land. I’d forward-facing, there are some seats like the Graco Contender that have a closed belt path which will keep the buckle from landing in the back. We just recommend a seatbelt extender or it will not be able to be unbuckled!

  • @rsl9594
    @rsl95947 жыл бұрын

    Doesn't the buckle being right on the butt/back hurt though, especially on longer flights? Is there a way to avoid that or pad it safely so it's not digging in the entire time?

  • @milesaway5164

    @milesaway5164

    7 жыл бұрын

    Hi! With this type of car seat, the buckle may sit at their back or legs (depending on rear- or forward-facing). I usually take a small blanket to add a little padding, but if you have a child who is very sensitive to it, a car seat with a closed belt path (plastic between the belt and the child) would be a good option

  • @milesaway5164

    You can do it! The Extend2Fit has slightly more padding to run the seatbelt under, so pulling some fabric away ahead of time may save you time in the plane and make it easier to see while you install, but it is a very easy seat to install. You may also need to put the armrest of the plane seat up to get enough room for it. I have flown alone several times and it gets easier the more you do it! Safe travels!!

    Is window seat the safest for the carseat?

  • @milesaway5164

    @milesaway5164

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Brittany! In the US, FAA regulations state that a car seat cannot block the egress of another passenger. For this reason, car seats are generally required to be installed in the window seat. There may be situations, such as 2 car seats installed side by side or a car seat in the middle seat of a middle aisle for example, where exceptions could be made. Final discretion is up to the flight attendant and/or captain.
