Installing A New Carb On Our 1968 VW Beetle, Aftermarket vs Solex!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is something that I've been wanting to do for a couple of years, so now is the time. I want to replace our OEM Solex carb (which is working just fine) with an aftermarket, no name carb. I found a cheap one on Amazon for around 60 dollars, so I thought I'd give it a try. I don't have high expectations for good performance from this carb, but I'm willing to give it a try. I'm installing it right out of the box, no adjustments until I'm able to get the engine up to temp and warmer weather. Thanks for watching! Please take a moment to give the video a thumbs up, comment and subscribe to our channel, we'd certainly appreciate it. Links included in the description.

I appreciate what you do for us old Volks Folks and of course, your car is amazing. It is probably just me, but the music that is legal you KZread is very repative and gets in the way of your fine narrative (for me). Maybe most other folks enjoy it.

Agreed, the background music is a bit loud... :) Thanks for your comment, that's what helps me put out better videos...

Love your channel, but you could do one thing to improve it.. You could turn your music down.. I noticed you back it down when speaking, but I think most people would rather not have any.. I've heard some good things about those Chinese carbs.. Not many Chinese things we can brag about.. Thx for bringing us along.. Take care and God Bless...

Modern VW carb replacements as well as the original suffer the same chronic problems associated with corrosion accelerated by ethanol fuels. The Brosol carb (Brazilian Solex) trys to get over this by substituting plated steel for the brass components to some success especially, when you consider that the air cooled VWs in Brazil run on pure ethanol. The split spindle bushings are most prone to wear and when that happens the fuel/air mixture goes to pot as air is sucked in via the bushes. By far the best course of action is to refurbish the original Solex carb that will be of measurably better quality than anything else using a rebuild kit, substituting delrin machined bushes for the original brass ones.

I am doing the same thing as I screwed one new carb by doing what I thought was right. Very much like your post and the new China carb gets here I will do nothing but install. Thank you for your help.

I will be doing a follow up on this very soon. This particular carb did good for about 3 months, then sort of fell on it's face. For the life of me, I couldn't get it run nearly as good as it did when it was new. Hopefully, you'll have better luck as I'm not really sure what happened to it. I want to try this again in the near future with another no name, off the shelf carb to see if I have better luck with it.

Once I got the timing correct the Thundermingo fired right up! I'm trying to get the idle to go a little higher and have turned the big screw to the left but don't want to go too far. I' unscrewed one all the way before with the engine running. At least gas didn't come pouring out. For $68 this worked just fine until I can rebuild my German Solex Pict 30 -1. Thank you for helping! There aren't many air cooled mechanics left except maybe here on KZread. I also have a 68 with the original H5 engine. Early H5's are supposed to be set at 0 Degrees as per the Bentley manual. It would not crank until I put it at 7.5 degrees BTDC. The engine may have been rebuilt. No telling what the history is but, she's running and tomorrow will be on the road again for a short test drive staying close to home. It has other issues but she's hobbling along still.

I got mine running pretty good for, next summer the engine is coming out so I can do it right. Love all the stories about taking an engine out in twenty minutes. Need a head, where to buy is the question.

Thank you for advice. I put on a China late summer, runs like crap. I will be getting the bug out of storage soon, did not know 5 full turns on the little needle to start. Out 5 turns and hopefully it will better to get her home. Again many thanks. Will be watching a lot.

Pretty cool video. I’ve got a 68 and it looks like they replaced the Solex for an aftermarket already. It’s aged and while it still works good going down the road the choke doesn’t seem to work anymore. I’ve adjusted it properly and have voltage to it but still not working. Figure for the money a new carb (same as this one) is worth throwing on especially since it’s purty. Thanks for the video, I was wondering if it’s adjusted out of the box so you answered that question.

It's adjusted to run out of the box..however, you may have to tweak according to climate conditions.
