Thank you. This was the simplest and most direct video I’ve seen on setting up a feeder. Thank you. The others I watched were either confusing or incomplete.

Yahoo! So many bee keeping videos are full of confusing chit chat and unnecessary information. Thanks for a very straightforward video!!!

I have used this type of feeder and always cut a thin piece of wood to float on top. I see they have added a nice "float". I find the bucket feeders work better. I have a hive top with sloping sides/roof so I just add a super to encase the bucket. I do put a small shim under one side of the inverted bucket. This way it doesn't get glued on!😊

That would be a hard feeder to clean!

I used one of these a almost immediately robbing started. I have no top entrances. What is the best time to install and fill one of these to prevent robbing from neighboring hives?

I've seen someone use hardware cloth to make a ladder that bees can climb out of.. much like the frame feeders, although I have seen bees drown in those as well...

I have heard of that trick as well. With any open top feeder you will experience some drowning. The only thing I would be careful with on the hardware cloth is buoyant enough to stay afloat. Its when the floats sink below the syrup line when a lot of drowning occurs.

I forgot to mention that they shape it into mountains and valleys, I guess... so there is always some hardware cloth to climb up and out of the syrup... this is my first year managing a colony, & there is so much to learn!

can you use this type of feeder after it gets cold? Will this introduce too much moisture into the hive?

This feeder can also be used during the colder months but it's not recommended to use liquid feed at that time because it can introduce moisture as well as freeze. A great alternative when it gets cold is to replace the sugar syrup with fondant. You can install a fondant slab in each compartment without the floats and the bees can freely move into the feeder and feed directly on the fondant without breaking their warming cluster.

I affectionately call those hive top drowners. Any advice on getting the bees not to drown?

Unfortunately with any open top top feeders, there will always be an issue with drowning. Drowning usually occurs when one of two things happen: Robbing bees or floats get stuck. If any of the upper entrances are open that could allow robbing bees to enter and that can produce excessive drowning. You will want to make sure all upper entrances are closed. Also each time you check the feeder make sure the sugar hasn't crystallized on the edges of the floats. If the floats start sticking to the walls, this could keep them below the syrup line. If this happens just clean off the crystallized section and the float is ready to use again. You will also want to remove the floats each time you add additional syrup. If you refill with the floats still in the feeder, that can also push the floats down.
