If somehow you could install some kind of skirting around the van, that would also help to keep the cabin warmer. See "Bridge May Freeze Before Roadway" signs that explain the physics. There might be a way to circulate hot water through plastic tubing to keep the floor warm as a DIY radiant heater. Sketch out some ideas and talk with a plumber. I bet you could build a scale model to test the theory.

Tory absolutelty great job your moving at the pace that works for you. I mean you put down a floor. there is a sealant called butyl tape comes in a roll used in construction and automotive applications uses include sealing joints between metal roofing panels. found at home depot and amazon another thing you might consider is spraying under carriage of van with rubberized sealant for road noise and the elements. Rust-Oleum undercoating pro grade. Thanks for sharing keep up the awesome work.

Tory, could you please explain why you went with Birch plywood and not a marine grade plywood? It seems to me that marine grade would have solved many if not all the issues you mentioned. Granted, it's not pretty but it is cheaper and functional since you're putting Vinyl flooring over it anyway. Oh, and don't forget to stop and take a breath from time to time. It's not a race so don't stress not getting things done quickly. 😁👍 As always, BIG HUGS and much ❤from Tennessee!

Smart move not installing the floor too. I've done 2 builds and always do the floor at the end. I'm an ex-builder and think it's nuts seeing these van builds when they install the finish floor at the start of the build. That's better suited for the end of the build.

Most van build videos are just time lapses that don’t really give a sense of what’s involved. You are showing us what it really takes for a project like this. My only recommendation, buy better tools. The Ryobi One system is ok, but really underpowered for the long haul. Spend a little more for Milwaukee or DeWalt tools. Also, they make drill/countersink bits that eliminate steps, and use a quick-change bit system to make your workflow go faster. I realize you are WAY past a lot of this by the time you post the videos, but it might help the next person down the line. I think you’re doing great!

This is such a fun idea and it’s awesome your doing this. Honestly though I reckon you put in a bathroom and toilet area. Give you more options to visit places, however it’s your van. Recently a saw a video of a couple that have van similar to yours and they put the bathroom behind the driving area. They’re the van couple that also build vans professionally.

Floor looks good. I didn’t screw my plywood floor down. Though I did screw the plywood joints together by angling finish screws. I wish I would’ve bought tongue and groove 3/4 OSB or Plywood instead. Not sure why I didn’t. I built everything on top of the finished floor. So I didn’t think screwing the floor down and adding more holes was a good idea.

Regarding the cold floor problem, I used those puzzle piece Eva foam yoga mats you can get from Walmart. I put the on the floor in the winter and for the first half second they are cold then the part you are touching warms up. I didn’t bother to insulate the floor of my van.

  • @FishFreddie

If you make youre floor higher, and you have a webasto, you can put the pipes also go under youre floor... than you have a cheap way of floorheating if you use the correct lines. We did this in our Iveco as well. Works great!, you can do that as well on the walls.

I don’t know how I feel about the wool in the floor. In the event it gets wet or has moisture there’s no way for it to dry. It may just hold the moisture like a sponge. I am currently building a shuttle bus and fullsize school bus, I used Owens Corning foamular insulation board and glued it down with loctite foam board adhesive. Chuck Cassady has a great video about insulating floors and another one about insulation in general.
