Installing A 200w Solar System In My Shed

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Check out my new book that you can pre-order now. Simplify Vegetable Gardening will be available on 16th Feb 2024. Pre-order now to be the first to get a copy of this book that has all my personal tips. geni.us/SimplifyVegGardening At last all my plans for the shed have started to come to fruition, The first of these plans is Installing a 200w solar system in my shed. This system will enable me to do so much more over the next few years, It will also have lots of little perks that having a 200w solar system can supply. for example, I will have a small cooler to help keep milk and cans cold at the site providing tea and a cold drink when needed. It will provide the power for future plans as we gain more room. and it's expandable too.
You don't need to Install a 200w solar system in your shed, it could be just enough for some lights or to run a small pump of sorts, but I am Installing a 200w solar system in my shed so that I can bring you so many more projects, the sky is the limit.
I do not want to spoil the surprise of the ideas I have for this system but by me Installing this 200w Solar System in my shed it does not make it totally feasible for me to finally get these projects off the ground.
Building the shed last year, and installing the new roof a couple weeks ago was all preparation for Installing a 200w solar system in my shed and bringing me closer to real maximising on the potential of the allotment garden.

    Good video Tony, I have panels too but have went for an inverter system, just several so far but will put up more soon and in the middle of building a vertical wind turbine for on the plot too. I want a total of 1kw so I can automate more things on the plot and the ultimate goal is to grow any veg at anytime of the year in my passive solar greenhouse. using techniques normally used by people growing cannabis like grow lights and space buckets but for tomatoes, peppers etc.

    You could do with replacing that junction box next to your charge controller with a 12v fuse box. It’s not likely you’ll be using any equipment which draws a huge current but it’s good practice. Alternatively use in line fuses, the type where you can use standard car fuses.

    Great video, I'm late viewing it as this is my first time on your channel, very interesting indeed, I'll consider subscribing. One thing I would say for anybody planning to do this, they say that you should connect the solar charge controller to the battery BEFORE you plug the solar panels into the solar charge controller because (they say) the solar charge controller won't know what to do with the power coming from the panels and might frazzle itself. I must say you've got some beautiful vines there, I've never tried growing them myself.

  • @simplifygardening

    @simplifygardening

    Thanks for the tips. The controller is designed to handle the charge form the panels until its sent somewhere, so should never cause an issue, but its prob safer your way too. Thos vines are not even three years old yet

  • @danwiddison

    @danwiddison

    If that were the case then where does the solar charge controller put excess power when the battery is full? If it just kept charging the battery it would gas and ruin the battery.

  • @PINACI
    @PINACI5 жыл бұрын

    Nice, but not one fuse in sight apart from the 15amp fuse fitted inside the charge controller ! I recommend at least fitting some inline fuses just to be on the safe side and don't forget the longer you run the wire the more voltage drop you will get.

    Do it exactly like his in this order: ALWAYS connect your battery ("earth"/"ground"/"negative"/"minus symbol"/"black") terminal to the charge controller "minus symbol" FIRST! Then your live wire"/"hot wire"/"red wire" goes to the charge controller "positive symbol". You can SAFELY connect your load device in the same order, and ALWAYS attach the negative 1st, then the lead "red wire". Now your device will function. Third step is the solar panel "minus symbol"/"negative wire"/"black wire" to the minus symbol on the charge controller and lastly, the "positive"/"red"/"hot"/"sparky"/"live wire" to complete your circuit! And disconnect in the reverse order for servicing. ( i like putting appropriate fuses on "red" lines). Ask me how I know! Love it! POWER UP!

    When installing the Solar Panels on the roof, you used wood screws to hold down the Z brackets; I was wondering, will the wood screws stand up sufficiently to strong, high speed winds? I live in an area where the wind gusts can easily reach 100 km/hr or a bit more, and sometimes blow for several minutes or in rare occasions for tens of minutes. I don't think my neighbors would appreciate my solar panels becoming ripped off the roof of my shed and cracking their roof tiles, or possibly breaking their windows.

    An excellent video, which I am sure will benefit and give lots of ideas to other people on here. Well explained in easy steps. Fans in the tunnel maybe and also a 12V fridge in the shed to keep the beer cool 🍻😀 What would you estimate the total cost to get to this stage?.....How about creating a parts list used with links to items in your shop....in case others want to copy the build?..............Top job mate 👍👍👍

    Regardless of where the parts are sourced from, I'd strongly recommend that if you're considering a 200 W or more Solar Panel system, it would be prudent to install a Direct Current (D.C.) isolation switch rated to match the Solar Panels' short circuit current, although I'd add an extra 50% rating to the isolation switch, to apply an old Electrical Engineering rule of thumb; in case the Solar Charger doesn't have a built-in isolation switch. For inexperienced folks; as an example, a 200W solar panel or set of solar panels wired in parallel, working at 18.2V delivers a maximum current of 200W/18.2V = 10.99, say 11 Amps D.C., but you can't just then calculate 11 * 1.5 = 16.5 Amp D.C. rated isolation switch is fine because the 16.5 Amps D.C. is the maximum current delivered by the Solar Panels during normal operation. To properly rate the D.C. isolation switch, use the short circuit current which must be checked from the manufacturer's specifications data sheet, and for one particular type of Solar Panel, it's rated as 11.7 Amps D.C. short circuit current, thus the isolation switch should be rated for 11.7 * 1.5 = 17.55, say 18 Amps D.C. Another item to add for safety, would be a D.C. rated circuit breakers, rated for the Solar Panels maximum short circuit current; please don't use the 50% safety margin as was suggested for the D.C. isolation switch because we want the circuit breaker to trip as close as possible to the short circuit current for the Solar Panel/s. Such a D.C. circuit breaker is installed before the isolation switch. Separate D.C. rated circuit breakers for each load the Solar panels are connected to, are strongly recommended in case the Solar Charger and/or inverter don't already include their own circuit breakers. It's also very important to make sure the wiring is rated at least for the same D.C current as the D.C. isolation switch. The insulation should be fire retardant, and if not using electrical conduits if running the wires outdoors, then double insulation should be used and the outer insulation should best be selected for weather and Solar U.V. resistance. An added advantage of using electrical conduits, is that it's much harder for wind storm debris to accidentally cut the outside wires, or for potential thieves to intentionally cut the wires to steal any outdoor fixtures. These precautions may seem a bit extreme, but when dealing with sufficiently high currents, safety and preventing an electrical fire from starting are of paramount importance. If insurance issues are involved, then it may be wise to have a licensed electrician to perform the electrical wiring because even if everything was done correctly, the insurance assessor may decide not to pay out on the policy if the person that did the wiring didn't have an accredited electrical license.

    Hi, loving the videos and just purchasing this exact setup for the summer. A couple of questions if you could answer please? 1) Do I need to buy a specific switch? 2) Could i invert and charge my power tools using this type of power? I would be interested how much you're currently running off this system please?

    You dont need to buy a specific switch as long as it supports the current that runs through it. If you add an inverter you can run anything from it thats 110 or 240v and obviously 12v too. just setup different circuits. Im running the lights and pumps from this along with charging my power tools and a radio and pond pump I have never run out of power yet

    This is something I would like to do in my shop. Instead of rounding off the heads, rendering them unremovable- in case you need to repair or replace them, how about adding a large washer and nut to the ends of the screws? WOW! what a great greenhouse! I'm in the States and we have community gardens, but you can't build structures on them. Is this a lease type of thing? Do you not have enough room at your home for a garden? Excuse the questions, I'm just very interested.
