Well, it's been a year. How did it go? I'm converting a small school bus, nearly done except for the o/d heater.

We have to replace our Propane heater in our 1999 Roadtrek .. great video! It lights with batteries soooo cool..

I have one of those tankless water heaters a friend gave me. I'll hook it up in the cabin as soon as I get the shower stall installed and the pluming fixed properly. I really wish I could find an old ball and claw foot bathtub. But they are as rare as hens teeth around here. Good luck.

@@gypsyjenna One concern: a bathroom exhaust vent needs a fresh air source (open window) in order to get the 'bad air' flowing out effectively. At least one model would be safer because it has a fresh air intake and a separate exhaust duct.

@@gypsyjenna Another concern is vibrations/shaking while driving. Parts can come loose. A recall was done due to this from simply shipping them. Per Consumer Reports: "Pieces inside the water heater can move around during transport, causing an air-filter door switch to malfunction, according to the CPSC. If the switch fails and the door cannot close properly, dust and lint can accumulate and lead to a CO-poisoning hazard."

I wouldn't be overly concerned about carbon monoxide, with the fan and the short time you use it, it puts out less carbon monoxide than using a 2-3 burner propane stove to cook dinner.

EVERYONE FREAKING OUT ABOUT USING INSIDE, there is no issue, running them inside you use your gas stove inside for hours on end, and it gives off the same flame, you can use these inside just don’t be a fool, and have something flammable right above the vent and keep a window cracked isn’t a bad idea, you can use these inside all day long. I have one in my van I use it for a shower here and there and are zero issue zero problems do not worry about it.

Yep, it's true! People freak out about it but we run our stoves and the fumes are still inside! 🤷‍♀️ Having said that, i do keep my bathroom vent open and fan on when using mine in a confined space like the bathroom..

I am in the process of replacing my tank heater with a HOTaitai tankless heater because of decent reviews AND it has a round vent in the middle so I can vent it directly out of the old water heater cabinet like the original unit did. I paid $149 which is a heck of a lot better than $550+ for an OEM tank unit. I am using all the original piping ( water and propane ) and adapting it all to be solid and in place so I don't have a heater hanging like you do but ya gotta do what ya gotta do ! I'll make a vid of it after it's finished.

I have mine mounted on a 2 wheel dolly so its more versital I use it outside a lot where I need hot water and shower with it outside a lot too. cheers from the Ozarks!!

Sorry I did not see this to answer it, yes the water heats up as it comes out of the water output when the unit it on

I did one of these installed in our 1987 Mercedes 207d after the water heater gave up I hooked one of these up have to admit it’s awesome and took around 30 minutes to install

@@judichristopher4604 it was just a cheap one off eBay I guess they all work in the same way though I basically hooked up the shower hose off the old built in shower to the boiler that way when u turn on the cold water tap from the old shower it pushed the water into the boiler which ignites and that’s instant hot water the water comes from the water tank from the motorhome and I put a gas bottle into the cupboard behind the shower room pushed a gas hose threw the wall Hooked up to the boiler the ignition work by battery under the boiler

Yes it still works to this day and I love it!

I replaced my hot water heater in my motor home with a tank less one, the difference is I replaced my onboard one because I don,t boon dock or live off grid.

Water stays in the plumbing of the hot water heater even if you unscrew the drain . Be careful in below freezing temps. Take inside in the winter or blow it out with air. I know this because mine froze and split a line inside of it even after it was drained. I have the same model

I am fixing to order my 3rd tankless water heater due to them freezing. I have mine installed under the kitchen sink and it still froze in these rare arctic temps we are having here in Arkansas this past week. I use the excel brand because it is ventless and has carbon monoxide sensors on it. I live in my camper full time while we are building our house so there isn't any draining lines during winter. I do love the tankless water heater. I will use it in my cabin too.

@@kiblerredneck1985 the one i had that froze and split one of the lines inside i was able to close the split as much as possible and soldered it and its working again. You might be able to save yours even if you just keep it as a backup unit.

Excel has one that is vent free that you can use inside. Just make sure you keep it in a warm area they freeze up and bust inside. Mine just froze up and busted this week with these arctic temps we are getting in Arkansas. It was under the kitchen sink in the RV. It is the 2nd one ive had freeze and bust. UGH

I'd love to know how this has worked for you since installing it. I bought a similar water heater but a different brand and plan on installing it in my camper. Mine has a big vent on the top that I plan on venting through the ceiling. A lot of people have told me not to do it, but I don't really see the problem if it's vented...

I have one as well (brand: Qlima) that I installed inside my bathroom. It's been running for 4 years now, even with the same batteries. I just crack open the window when I shower and I never really shower for more than 5 minutes. I have a CO meter, but it never gave one beep. I recently tested this CO-meter, just to see if it actually worked, and it did 🙂 Great stuff if you want to live on a budget (and have no access to mains gas)!! I use a small 9 liter bottle of propane and the one I use now has lasted me already 17 months (with 5 to 6 showerdays per week). I think they cost around € 40 per bottle? The only drawback from the one I have is that the water is a bit too hot during summer (on lowest setting), but perfect in the winter.

I have one exactly like yours, 10 yrs. Old highly recommend no problems. I would Move away from Moisture electronic Section. Batteries also. Uses very little fuel. They do have vent kit also. One Thing is cant let it freeze with water in Core. Less than 100$ Fantastic

We had 3 adults and 2 yr old. Each take One or 2 showers a day , dishes, some Landry the 20lb last from 6 to 8 months At highest. I have plugged into 500 gallon And added another unit in kitchen, and Dryer , cook stove. In 6 yrs we have only Used 120 gallons. Dryer and cook stove Using most. If I where to build a big house I would use these as point of use. Over a central unit.

I've read that the best way to use a tankless w/h is to get the temp set on the unit to exactly what you like for showering. Don't mix in cold water to balance the temp as it reduces the water pressure at the w/h unit and that can signal it to shut off.

@@judichristopher4604 I do this in my one family home. I adjust the gas fed H/W heater to a comfortable level, We pay a lot for water here and besides paying to heat water and then using and paying for cold water to temper the hot is IMHO a waste of both money and resources.

I thought only cold water goes into the unit? There’s only one source for the inlet.

So what do you do for water in the winter time? We lived full time in our rv for three years we’d spend 6 months of the year on our off grid property then spend the cold 6 months at an RV park because of the water issues.

I winterize and shower elsewhere for the cold months. I keep water jugs inside that wont freeze for drinking, hand washing and cooking. I catch the grey water inside as well but nothing goes through the plumbing system.

Nice job Gypsy Jenna. I know a couple on a sailboat that use one too. Would the heater heat the water hot enough if the tank water was in the lower 40s?

Yes it does. When my fresh tank is freezing cold this thing heats the water almost immediately

It looks like the water heater uses standard rv shower connections for the input/output since you have its input connected to the original shower diverter. If it doeson't then the fittings should be easy to find where rv accessories are sold. It's been about 20 years since I had to bother with such tasks. We had to buy most items from the local campground/trailer park.

But how did you hook up the 12 V motor on the blue hoses who hoses What fittings did you change out

I am converting a stepvan into a mini home. I will put this at the end of my counter beside my mini wood stove. Pipe the hot water to my sink and outside shower hookup.

Nice job, Jenna. I am planning something similar in my van. What kind of temperatures do you get coming out of the exhaust? Is it really hot when it's running with your heat shield?

I haven't noticed it too bad, I make sure to run my bathroom ceiling fan and I intermittently shut the water off to conserve

I want to try this with a recirculation shower i put together a hour shower and this would work great for it reheat the water i can shower on a gallon of water for as long as I want i just want the water to stay warm

You should have plumbed it into the RVs propane tank the RVs water heater line could have a Tee in it to go to the new water heater, depending on your rv even tee it into the stove line .

Re: the venting issue, people heat their entire homes with unvented propane space heaters putting out 50,000 BTUs, and don't have any problems.. so shouldn't be an issue with this device, which probably puts out less heat than my 4-burner gas stove in my house.

When you turn the water hose on... that is pressure. If you turn your water hose on HIGH... that is High Pressure... I asked the same question... my husband gave me this answer... The ceiling gets warm but I shut the water off intermittently to conserve water while I lather up etc.. I dont let the unit run constant during the entire length of the shower

As long as you have propane the water should be warm or hot (depending on settings) when it comes through the output

I think it will for sure. The unit comes with a handheld shower head which has an on/off switch. A good tip would be to rinse, shut off water, lather up and turn water back on etc. When the shower head is off the propane stops. This will help u save both water and propane

Hi there. I'm worried about propane falling instead to the bottom of the vehicle instead of being sucked out the top? Is that a valid concern? I know I'll have propane detectors situated at the bottom of my van somewhere, and it would be nice to not have to cut another hole in my van so that I can vent one of these. These tankless propane heaters seem to be my only option if I want a hot shower *in* my van which is basically a must since ill be living in it for the foreseeable future.

I see your concerns and I am not entirely sure how it would be in a smaller space like a van. I have a vent in the bathroom with a fan and so whenever the water heater is in use, the vent is open with the fan on as well so the propane fumes have an escape. Personally, I dont think it is much different than using a propane buddy heater. I have seen some people mount them on swinging doors of their van and open it up when they use them for showers etc. If you do enough research I am confident you will figure out a solution that works best for you. @@davidborden3181 I tested it out initially in the bathroom with the door closed and the vent closed and it went off. Then I tested it again with the vent open, fan on and door cracked open and it never went off again. The bathroom is a very small space so not surprised it would go off without ventilation

There is a hose connected to where the shower head hose would normally go (behind tub faucet) and it runs into the water inlet on the unit

Just be careful in winter.

I believe that unit is supposed to be vented to outside. Check your owners manual having propane exhaust fumes in a closed space could be dangerous.

Thanks, it is an outdoor unit and I am aware of the dangers. I have a ceiling vent and fan in the bathroom,which I run during use. I leave the door opened and have several carbon monoxide detectors around. One that is vented outside from the top would be ideal for sure

@@stefanrandt33 it doesn't get too hot on the body but you can feel the heat coming from above and around the heat shield of course (it's where the flames vent). I use the ceiling fan and open the vent and I also dont close the bathroom door when it's in use and the CO alarms have not gone off with doing that

Suburban makes a tankless water heater you can install directly into the spot the old one was installed

I have had it now for over 2 years I think. I still really like it. Much better than the onboard one. Most people talk about it being an outdoor unit, which it is but I take precautions like: opening my skylight hatch, turning on the fan and turning off the water intermittently to lather up or rinse off etc. I would suggest if you are putting it inside to do your research and of course use a carbon monoxide detector since it is in a small space. But yes, I really enjoy mine, endless hot water (as long as there is propane lol)

No plumbing, I just connected the hoses to the bathtub faucet and ran a propane hose through the wall to a tank outside. None of the other sinks have the hot water option just the shower

Yes the faucet is threaded and I could screw the hose onto it. I just removed the existing shower hose to do this

I like the idea but it is a little dangerous even with the vent in ceiling that cubical could build up to a dangerous level and thats what would concern me. Remember carbon monoxide is attracted to heat like your body heat so in houses it known to find where people are this combined with that small shower cubicle makes it unlikely to set off the alarms outside until its really bad inside the shower even with the door open. Running the shower for a very limited time like you say would help prevent this id imagine. If youre still going to do this, at very least make sure you have carbon monoxide alarm that give a digital display reading if its detected anything above zero. That way you can look at the display daily to see if anything is escaping. Like the Kidde 5DCO. Put it close by just outside the cubical. Because a set up like this can be fine and gain your confidence until it isn't and you want to know the moment it isn't burning clean

No I don't. There is a roof vent above the shower which I open and turn the vent fan on when the unit is in use. I also don't close the bathroom door when it's in use since it is a small, confined space. It also a great idea to have a carbon monoxide alarm nearby.

Is your water heater still working good

Right now the camper is winterized but I will find out soon enough when I dewinterize and start using it again

There is a vent and fan in bathroom ceiling and I always run carbon monoxide detectors to be safe

They sell them on Amazon, the design might be slightly different now. I still use this heater everyday, still going strong

I couldn't tell you as I have never tested how hot the temp gets but it gets quite hot! It might be in the specs somewhere

I believe it was 170ish Canadian. If you're in the US I'm sure it is much cheaper

I have a direct vent gas stove thats making me sick, theres no way i would put this indoors. Detectors don’t always pick up low levels of CO that are still harmful.

If your stove is making you sick you should get it checked. You’re probably not getting a complete burn of the propane.

Still love it, still use it, still works. Very happy with the purchase and so much better than the onboard tank in my opinion

the one that i was looking at had warning on it saying not to have combustible materials within 20 inches of the back and 40 inches from the top. also has lots of warnings about carbon monoxide and that it is for OUTDOOR use only!!! please be very careful. these warnings are there for a reason

I have a roof vent in the bathroom and run the fan and leave the door open a crack. Never had a problem. Carbon Monoxide detector doesn't go off cause it vents any fumes outside. I did have my concerns at first but never a problem. I believe you can buy ones with a round vent on top that you could put an elbow stove pipe on to vent entirely outside

I have a hose running right from my shower faucet and into the water inlet of the heater. Then a hose with shower head on the water outlet of the heater. Hope this helps!

They are meant for outdoor use. However I run a fan above it and in my opinion it's no different than having a propane stove lit inside your rig. You still vent it and I have carbon monoxide detectors throughout.

Why does she keep saying “ote”? Is she trying to say “out” ? 🤷‍♂️

Looks good, but in my experience they don't last that long.

Most people don’t understand these units don’t run all night / day just when you’re using hot water. We have a Rinnai in home tankless w/h and yes it’s vented outside. It only runs when we’re using hot water and is completely off otherwise. We are installing a tankless in a cargo conversion to toy hauler and will vent it to the safe side just for peace of mind.

Just who thinks these water heaters run all night ???? I guess people are misinformed about them. The burners only run when you’ve got the water faucets on and shut off immediately after the water stops flowing.
